The origin of the Newport Tower is one of the most hotly debated topics of Colonial American history. The discovery of astronomical alignments in the tower in the 1990's led to more investigation into the enigmatic tower, and more theories about it's construction.
While the common perception, even among historians, is that this structure is the ruin of a colonial era windmill, it must be stressed that this theory has never been proven, and no archeologist who has studied the Tower has ever reached that conclusion.
Jim Egan, the curator of the Newport Tower Museum takes you on a tour of the Tower's architecture and possible origins.
According to historian David Beers Quinn the first English colony in America was to be settled in the area now known as Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island in 1583, but the Colonization effort failed. Egan's research indicates that this tower is the physical remains of those efforts.
