Great episode. I could have used about 20 more minutes. It's a good thing they sent DJ to Southern Pines instead of Icarito or we might have seen 2 lost nines.

Great episode. As a native of Southern Pines who grew up playing all of these courses, it was fun to watch the NLU crew play the courses of my youth. The "Lost Nine" was the first course I ever played and where my brother and I learned the game of golf. We played it at least 200 times in our youth and we were more disappointed than anyone when they stopped maintaining it. But let's clear up some blatantly false tales from the episode: 1) It was maintained until the mid-1990s, not the 1960's as claimed in the episode. We played there every day during the summers of the late 1980's and early 1990's. 2) It is not a Donald Ross design. It was constructed well after the first 18 as a short 9-hole course where those who couldn't manage the big course could play. 3) It is not a great design like the big course at SPCC (which I love). The first tee of the Lost Nine is not near the clubhouse and there was never a starter because the course saw minimal play and one was not needed. On most days it would only see a few rounds comprised mostly of junior golfers. While I'd love to see it restored just for sentimental reasons, it would not be a course I'd recommend someone playing if they ever did restore it. No one played it when it was open and I can't see it getting much play if they spent money to restore it.

Its funny watching you guys play all these Donald Ross course after listening to the EAL interview with Pete Dye who said Ross never intended those greens to be like that this just built up by the overseed and were meant to play at a 5 or 6. In fact he wanted to chop the tops off all the greens at pine before he died.
