It's not "four L's in a row" as those young ladies say - LL is a single letter in Welsh with its own sound, and it so happens that in this compound name contains an accidental double LL. (CH is a single letter also, with the same sound as in German.)

I remember years ago i was hired to do this job for this company that manufactured fibre glass products. The manager was a Welshman and when we greeted each other he asked me how to pronounce my name. It's an usual name but it has an english version which i replied to him to save me the trouble of a pronunciation lesson. He insisted i teach him because he knew i was making assumptions that he was English, which in my experience have butchered my name with out any respect for it. Anyway he ended up telling me where he was from etc. Even spoke Welsh to me, it was awesome. He said to me as he started to draw a map. "This is the UK ok? This is Wales, these are the Scotts and this is England." "We have all the mountains, and these bastards here (pointing to England) take all our water. It's the English that cause all the trouble" Ever since then i never saw the UK the same and it painted a new picture for me on Welsh people.

I was right about one thing.... In Welsh, nygubngfsbmnwuinboyuntuwebyklubqnvpiw might just be pronounced "Cow" and mean something. I used to think Japanese was hard until I learned a little about Welsh. By the way, rthat was just me pounding the keyboard randomly. I doubt it's a real Welsh word.
@MrSlyGamer
@MrSlyGamer 9 жыл бұрын
Correct it's not a real word and some of those letters don't exist in the Welsh language. Cow in Welsh is actually "buwch" pronounced b-ew-hk. That jumble of letters would actually be pronounced "nuh-geeb-ng-vs-bm-nooee-in-boh-uh-een-tee-wehb-uuh-leeb-n-peeoo" k, q, x, v and z do not exist in Welsh so I left those letters out because they'd be soundless. But there you go. ;)

English is the youngest language in the world so if you speak English it doesn't mean every body else does. and why do English speakers assume that y is the same in all languages. if you want to read something in Welsh you have to forget what you know about English it's not the same it's completely different it's like trying to get a dog to say moo. anyway I like Americans they are so intelligent and wise and good looking just like George w Bush!!!😂

@Fireball1787
@Fireball1787 9 жыл бұрын
No. The Welsh do not hate vowels. You need to know that W and Y are both vowels in Welsh. "Y" is normally pronounced as the "i" in GIN. However, written on its own (as a definite article: THE), it is pronounced as "ER" - as in "earth". For words beginning with a vowel (A,E,I,O,U,W and Y) it is written as "YR", and pronounced (approximately) as the -er at the end of "utter" "W" is pronounced as "oo" as in COOL (never as in BOOK). I hope this helps! Lwc dda! :-)
@Nornagast
@Nornagast 9 жыл бұрын
W is pronounced like the oo in book or the u in put. When it is short. There are long and short vowels in Welsh.
@Fireball1787
@Fireball1787 9 жыл бұрын
True. Often a lengthened vowel is indicated by a circumflex over the vowel: e.g Gŵr: Man
@XX-ts6lc
@XX-ts6lc 9 жыл бұрын
The "ER as in earth" is a potentially misleading description of the pronunciation of the Welsh definite article "y", because English "er" is a longer sound, and also because in some English accents the "r" is pronounced. I think that the sound is better likened to the English indefinite article ("a"), at least as said in normal rapid speech when it sounds like the "a" in "comma" rather than the name of the letter A.

Quite. Welsh place names are reasonably phonetic once you learn the system, which is more than can be said for English place names. Where I say "reasonably" phonetic: Welsh *words* are extremely phonetic, but for place names there is the slight complicating factor that words can be run together but the correct pronunciation may depend on recognising where to break the name back down into the constituent words. There is also a complicating factor of having to be sure that you are really looking at the Welsh and not the English version of a place name, before attempting to apply Welsh pronunciation rules to it. Nonetheless, as a native English speaker but only a learner of Welsh, I would be more confident about pronouncing an unfamiliar Welsh place name correctly than an unfamiliar English one.

Yes I can pronounce that name 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch' and in me own Georgian language it is "შანფერპუშგუინგიშგოგეროხუინტრობიშსანტესილიოგოგოგოჰ" :D

Questions to the Welsh speakers: why is the first Y in Rhydymwyn pronounced as an i?
@ftumschk
@ftumschk 5 жыл бұрын
Because it's a compound word (Rhyd y Mwyn - "Ford of the Ore") and the y in "rhyd" ("rheed" = ford) is pronounced "ee". That's true of most if not all monosyllabic Welsh words with a "y" in them - e.g. byd ("beed" = world), pryd ("preed" = meal). The exception is "y" on its own; this is the Welsh definite article, which appropriately enough is pronounced like the "e" in "the".
