Never had a tow-behind with it's own engine. Growing up we had a bush hog that ran off the pto from the tractor and also had a sickle bar mowing machine that ran off the pto shaft as well, but we typically only used that one when we were going to rake it and bale it afterwards. We had a 1939 John-Deere "A" model we used the bush hog with and a smaller '41 "H" we used the mowing machine with. I'd go ahead and try the old belt...worst that can happen is it breaks and as you were going to buy a new one anyhow it isn't like you'd be out any more cash than you already were.

We usually took the boot off from around the end of the plug wire so that just the metal clip that attached to the spark plug was showing, that way when we wanted to kill it we'd just ground the plug out with a screwdriver (when the original kill switch was long gone, lol)
