I agree. Das is confused here. The skin they are pulling off was NOT part of Starhopper to begin with. That was a protective sacrificial layer they added to protect from launch debris. Its going into the lobby of the office building after restoration.

Das - Those "ruler" marks along the carriage are weld spacing marks. Some instances fully welded edges can warp components from the continual heating, causing the area you just welded to become real hot but the rest of the length is cold, causing expansion and warping of the panel, so you space welds out along the edge and it has very close (sometimes more) to the same strength as being continually welded. I imagine they didnt want really thick plating up there, as its more weight on the carriage as a level arm. So you reduce material thickness, and space out the welds so it doesnt deform and you have a more reliable and repeatable process instead of having to try account for warpage/expansion.

The stops for the chopsticks have an impact plate, the other has the Crush portion of the tube exposed with an internally welded cap, inside the pipe. So if there is a grab, that misses, then the portion of the crush will reduce he shock/dynamic forces impacts.

Those panels on Starhopper were added to protect it from flying debris whilst it was a water tank close to OLM1. And I'm guessing that the pipes being removed are the ones which were added to support its role as water tower supporting early Booster and Starship tests. If the SpaceX engineers do anything that looks like they going to actually cut it into pieces then glue some bacon to it and Jack will protect it with his life.

My guess is that once Star Hopper is returned to it's pristine/original form, they will keep it at the present location as a historical developmental monument, or possibly relocate it to the front of the new office building on the ground near where the roads intersect and form an approximate 45 degree angle. I highly doubt that they will place it inside the new building where there is a triangular opening in the roof. Would look too crazy there!

Great to see they got the chopsticks under much better control! Wonder why it had those heavy oscillations at setpoint previously. Anybody know what was changed? My guesses are based on solving similar hydraulic positioning issues. The goal is to decelerate to a precise setpoint without oscillation. The primary physical factors that made this a non-trivial control problem: A high mass moving fairly fast with virtually no damping (inherent braking). All braking needs to be generated by the valve(s) to bring the mass to a precise stop at the setpoint. (Kinda like the suicide burn when a f9 lands.) The things I found that could deliver the sort of oscillation we were seeing previously: 1 - Cavitation due to asymmetrical flow thru a symmetrical valve. 2 - Hoses or long runs of piping between the valve and the cylinders. 3 - Hydraulic fluid is compressible. 4 - Control system didn't use enough finesse. (AI/Fuzzy logic) 5 - All of the above... I would REALLY like to know is what was the real cause of the old Jiggy-Jiggy dance. I'm pretty sure that Super Heavy is relieved that it wont be clobbered on every return visit!

From the beat-up appearance of the sheets coming off Starhopper it looks like they were additional shielding to protect SH from launch debris Now that SH is no longer clos3 to the launch tower they are removing the shielding to go back closer to its original flight configuration
@thomashayden8043 ай бұрын
It actually had the shiny metal for all its flights. I think it was mainly to make it look cooler, though it also matched its nosecone before that was destroyed. I wonder if they just consider it a safety risk now that it's all beat up and might fall off (like a bunch of it already has lol)

Hopper - looks like they were stripping off all the panels that were put there to protect it from debris of exploding Starships, revealing the intact and undamaged ship inside. Probably going to strip off all the add-on hardware that isn't needed, then dress it up as a museum presentation. It's make a great remote observation platform for launches, and tourist information center.

Arms seem a LOT stiffer after those welded plates - less ‘wobbling’ after moving. I did wonder if they were putting those on more for ‘stiffness’ than added strength.
