That is so dope. I always wondered how those towers were built from scratch and put their soo perfectly. Great video!

I work near towers I saw in the distance as a teenager; quite tall. The guy lines are arrayed with weights on them near their anchorage points. All quite fascinating!

I've always wondered about RF antenna towers. How long is each red or white section? Is that a standardized length so you can easily count them to know how tall the tower is? Cell phone towers don't use the red or white painted sections unless there's some other purpose for the tower.

Thanks for the info! Is there a height that above which the red & white is required? I read the colors were chosen for best visibility. Info much appreciated! Careful climbing guys!
@wilypitner79435 жыл бұрын
The color sections are normally devided into seven sections 4 red and 3 white according to CAA regulations and warning lights are at 30m or 11ft intervals as well. Worked on all kinds of masts and towers. Miss it since I'm retired. Awesome work in this video. Wonder what type feeder is used for antenna stack at the top.

Why is the bottom of the tower pointed? I saw one a few weeks ago and it didn’t make sense to me
@jamesburris40782 жыл бұрын
So it can pivot... At 1500 feet, the wind loading is unreal, and it will twist, if it was the 3 legs bolted to the foundation, that twisting motion will eventually cause stress cracks, and eventually failure of the structure. I relamped one in Orange Texas that was 600', and it had no torque arms on it, plus a 12 bay candle opera. Even with hardly any wind, it twisted 2 feet, back and forth at 600 feet in the air. I changed the becon bulbs, and came down pretty fast, because it is not a very fun sensation.

Why does the tower have such a narrow, and pointed base? I'm sure there's a engineering purpose, but it just looks so odd and unstable to us laymen.
@berno918 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong, but I think its beacouse it functions as a pivot point. those tower move a lot becouse of the wind. If it the base was solid the lever force would crack it
@nakayle7 жыл бұрын
Bernardo de Elía is right. You can't have the guys totally taut so there is some sway. Nearly all towers of this height are pivoted.
@ArkadiuszPL7 жыл бұрын
I think it is because below this concrete socle you have 3 concrete piles.
@rockyduggan2357 жыл бұрын
it's a central pivot point. All forces concentrated at one point. central axis.

okay so they use a crane to put it together but how do they put the crane up
@nicholascrespo90035 жыл бұрын
Crane is used for 200 ft, or so, of the mast build. Then a jin pole is hoisted (the yellow mast in the vid) and attached to the side of the mast. They pull section up with the jin pole and secure them, until they run out of head room. Then they hoist (or "jump") the jin pole higher up and attach it, then begin to hoist more sections. Repeat, until mast has been built. They use double or triple drum winch trucks or trailers at the bottom and run the cables up and down with wire blocks & rigging. Jumping the jin pole up is very dangerous.

Seems like the answer to simple questions like why's the bottom shape of these like a triangle? Can't get answers from yt search u get like 3 videos n their bs algorithms non sense ffs so I gotta ask them of the ppl who work the field! I used to do ham radio but we never learned why do these types have the guide safety wires and the shape of the bottom one would think flat is best but no is it to do with the antenna itself? Or something like better performance? Or something else thatd be structural more so?
@NAPtubexvii Жыл бұрын
The bottom is tapered like that so all the internal forces are resolved to a single point of downward force. If you think of the concrete foundation like a seesaw, if you push one end down with your hand, the other side goes up. If you stand at the center of the seesaw and push down, it will hardly move at all. So, the base carries all the compression, and the wires that attach to the distant anchor foundations take the horizontal, uplift, and rotational forces. You CAN leave the three legs separate at the bottom, but you just need a stronger foundation. Basically just saves some money and materials if you taper the base since it's a more effective design. - Source: a telecom engineer

@@NAPtubexvii thanks I never understood that lol been a ham operator extra class since like 2001 lol but never knew this I even built my own but they weren't this large so thr base were normal looking lol. But thanks for the answer was very detailed and accurate makes perfect sense too. How'd they ever discover this even like wtf lol tricks of thr trade that get ppl to thinking oh there must be an evil illuminati thing lmao just cuz millennials don't know how anything's done cuz they've never really had do anything it's mostly gen x and the boomers who actually worked manual labor and construction etc lol now they've all got desk jobs and they stream video games for a living n give their opinions on things they know not about lol that how we ended up with so much ignorance but anyway I digress lol I went way out into thr weeds with this 1 lol
