We watch as they work into the evening inserting 3 new segments into the already-standing tower crane #2, raising it higher. A compilation of various time-lapses at various speeds, set to music. Compresses about 5½ hours of work into about 19 minutes. At the end, there's a summary time-lapse of the entire process at 900X.
Ⓗ series construction week 36, set 1, from March 4, 2015.

Nicely done! I'd been wondering how these cranes were erected for years. Today I was stopped by a construction worker who was doing traffic control as one of these cranes was being dismantled. So I pulled into a nearby parking lot, got out of my car, and spent the next hour and a half watching them extract and lower two sections. Your excellent time-lapse videos showed me all the details I couldn't see from the ground and explained a number of processes that I didn't initially understand. Thanks a lot!

I am with Morrow Equipment Co. LLC. I am the Project Manager at Morrow's corporate engineering department who drew up the climb sequence and placement for the tower cranes on this project. These are Morrow tower crane and the project was with HerroBoldt - Cathedral Hill Hospital - Van Ness and Geary Campus Hospital. Crane 1 top climbed to a final hook height of 332 ft. and is tied to structure once with a tie-in assembly. Crane 2 (shown in video) top climbs to a final hook height of 294 ft. and is tied to the structure with a wedge assembly in the inner structure of the building. Excellent work on the video.

Thank you very much for this great information! A number of people have been asking how tall the cranes are, and I have been trying to find an answer. When people ask that question, I don't know what point they're considering, the hook height or the very tippy top of the crane.
@paulleader9532
@paulleader9532 8 жыл бұрын
For construction purposes the height of the hook is the most important variable for lifting and placing loads. Morrow Equipment is the representative for Liebherr tower cranes in the Americas, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The cranes for this project were Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 Litronic's. From the hook to the top of the tower top is another 42 ft. Our Liebherr 542 HC-L luffing cranes climbing on the new Salesforce Tower in San Francisco are expected to reach a final hook height of 1,129 feet with the boom luffed to 15° from horizontal. The cranes will have 11 tie-in assembly connections to the structure. They will be the tallest luffers ever erected in San Francisco. Again, thank you for the video. Excellent work.
@HospitalConstruction
@HospitalConstruction 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you again for the information! One clarification. As they stand now, I believe "crane 2" is now the taller of the two, because much later after this video it was raised gain even higher. Your message here says crane 1 is 332 and crane 2 is 294, which is less than crane 1. Is 294 the height crane 2 was originally? Do you know what height it was raised to later, as can be seen in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHS8oYWkjJx4m5o
@paulleader9532
@paulleader9532 8 жыл бұрын
The cranes are often erected at a low initial freestanding height and then top climbed to max freestanding height. This is to reduce the size of the mobile crane required to erect the crane for expense reasons. Crane 1's initial hook height is 256 ft. Crane 2's initial hook height is 218 ft. Crane 2 climbed to 294 ft. and leapfrogged crane 1. Crane 1 is planned to leapfrog crane 2 and climb to a final hook height of 332 ft. I am not positive where HerreroBoldt is with there schedule. It is possible that what you are calling Crane 2 is actually crane 1. I have not watched your entire sequence of video's so it is possible that I did not pick up on that. After the initial planning for the cranes my job is usually done unless issues pop up. This information should help you determine what's going on. I will find out what the status is on the climb sequence.
@paulleader9532
@paulleader9532 8 жыл бұрын
I do not have a date yet but Crane 1 is going to be jumping again to it's final hook height so you do have the crane #'s correct. It will be two tower sections taller than crane 2. They will be installing 4 tower sections. It will be after level 13 is constructed. You may want to get some footage of them installing the tie-in assembly.

Well, that is how "self-raising" tower cranes" work - a marvelous invention. On more conventional cranes, a second even taller crane is required to lift the sections into place after the jibs and cab section are removed.

@HospitalConstruction

At least one way they do it, is that they bring in an even taller mobile crane, and it pulls out the sections of the tower crane. I'm currently working on a couple of videos of this being done here on tower crane #2. Those videos will be out eventually, when I have time to finish them.
