Thanks for the vid, Scots. I did find an easier way to cheese the green guys : dig a trench across one of the gate entrances (for that location, I used the south-west one). It doesn't have to be very deep, just shoulder-high is ideal. Aggro as many of the npc's as you can and lead them to that entrance. Jump over and they will all get stuck in it. Fish in a barrel.
