What size trailer?
@antoniocarvalho7095 Жыл бұрын
I just came from a trip 600miles Georgia and Tennessee with my new 34FT trailer and RAM 1500. Previously i owned a 30FT, so this was a test. I got into steep inclines 6% and 8%. As you said and totally agree, keep your pride off and drive safe. Uphill the truck was doing 50mph in 4th gear, and didn’t need to go faster. Downhill, the tow/haul mode works fantastic it downshift to 4th and one time to 3th, but the downhill was so controlled that i felt always calm. A diesel or a 3/4T truck will do better, but this is what i have and love this truck, and i felt always under control. No issues with a 1500 towing around 8500 pounds. Note that, i have increased tire pressure slightly in the rear, and it made a huge difference in the sway.

I have a 30ft travel trailer that is 9500 lbs gross. I used to tow with a 1/2 ton, on paper, within max limits. Upgraded to a 3/4 ton, night and day difference. Braking, acceleration, handling all were better. You talked about anxiety, it’s gone wayyyy down since I have the right set up. It’s not about going faster, even when you slow down, in a emergency stop or turn, I like knowing that I have the confidence it’s gonna perform properly.

Just got back from a trip with our 30’ TT (7,500 lb loaded) & Max tow F-150 over the smokies/blue ridge mountains. On all my trips, I prefer to slow down (within safe reason), stick to the right lane, and just let everyone else pass me. Much more relaxing. I once chose to lock out 4th and above for a long steep downhill grade. Boy that engine whined, but barely had to touch the brakes.

I'm going to purchase a 28ft imagine. Looks like any brand 1/2 tons gets single digit mpg. 3/4 ton gets better mpg however a slight bit rougher ride and worse mpg not towing. Just thinking about trade offs. Ford is a smooth ride but duramax gets better mpg (rougher ride). Then thinking about better mpg with a diesel vs the higher cost of diesel then adding DEF. Maybe a 3/4 ton Ram gas might be better for both towing and unhooking to see the town. Any suggestions?

I remember as a kid my uncle towing a 30’ 80’s Winnebago trailer with his beater F150 work truck. He’d do 70mph all the way across the state. By himself obviously. No sway control. No weight distribution. But he’d done it for multiple decades and never had an accident. I would not recommend that. But it doesn’t mean you’re gonna end up falling down a mountain or flipping your camper or anything.

Great tip about the downhill coasting. Just tapping your brakes as a preventative measure is crucial. Not burning up the brakes is something they should teach in high school. Loosing your brakes going downhill with a 32 ft. trailer behind you is a recipe for disaster. Thank you for the great tips.

@@MountainSalsa just be careful to not get too long of a trailer for for the wheelbase of your tow vehicle. That’s another vector not often discussed. Maybe not a hard fast rule. I think etrailer has a wheelbase chart that tells you what the max trailer length ratio should be to the tow vehicle. I have a 1/2 ton Titan and a 28.5ft travel trailer. I kept telling my wife when we were looking our max was about 26 feet. She kept suggesting 30-34 footers. I was like no way, the truck cannot handle that safely. I went a little over with the 28.5 foot, but all my other numbers are in line. I have a spreadsheet and use the CAT scales on occasion. With a half ton, I think a combination weight distribution anti sway hitch is a must. Helps with sag and transfers more weight back to the front axle for steering and braking. I also have some heavier duty tires as well with 10 ply and E rated. More suited for a 3/4 or one ton. Only other mod I’m considering is adding some rear air bags to the truck to help with ride comfort.

Bravo. I'm a truck driver by trade. My saying has always been learning your vehicle and being aware on the road can be a fun experience. Way too many people like you said it's a pride issue. Let's not for the most important thing is experience. It's not just in RV's, it's the ranchers when hauling live stock. Most of them are bad driver's with no common sense and respect for others on the road. Any one can do this just be mindful of yourself and your vehicle's and others on the road ways.

The difference is the passes are 11,000 feet and so I lose 1/3 of my horsepower up there. I would not want people who have never towed to pull such a big load where I have. It would be better if they hook up a lighter trailer and get some towing experience. Safe downhill is more important than uphill.

Agreed. Let us also remember that Travel Trailer Tires or most tires are rated for speed. Going faster than what the trailer tires are designed for create dangerous situations as well. Granted the truck is pulling a lighter trailer, the tires can blow out if going beyond its capability. I won't go faster than 65 which is my tires max rate rating. I typically keep it around 50-55 MPH.
@liveyourfree3 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly enough, mine are rated for 75 mph. I wouldn't advise going that fast especially in a half ton but I was still surprised to see it. I'm hearing more and more tired are beginning to be treated at that speed. I like your approach to it though

Great video man. Nicely done. Kids are adorable also. I'm currently towing my Forest River Surveyor 276BHLE (32' long, 7200 lbs fully loaded) with my 2018 Mercedes GLS 450. It's certainly less than ideal and less capable than a half ton truck but as long as I'm not taking it in the mountains and as long as I'm careful, it tows no problem. I'll soon be upgrading to a GMS Sierra 1500 Denali with the 3.0L Duramax so I can tow even more safely and be able to take it up to Lake Tahoe. Still comfortably within my tow limit but I'm getting super close to my payload capacity. The self-leveling air suspension works great on the Mercedes, but if I over work it, something is going to fail eventually and that will be an expensive fix!

Thanks for the video! I have the same truck, camper(Grand Design), same length, weight distribution, hitch, etc. I live in Texas so I don't really have to deal with steep grades. I also added a cold air intake for added horsepower. 50 more HP with that.

Really appreciate your video! We have a half ton with a 2600RB and it does just fine through the Ozark Mountains. Have been considering going to the Smokies but was concerned that our truck might not be enough. Thank you for this!

I'm glad it helped. Just curious, what gear ratio do you have? Take it slow and enjoy the ride. Don't be in a rush and you will be just fine. Let me know how it goes. Happy camping and safe travels!

@@liveyourfree I hear ya. We're still researching our first trailer. What we're looking at is closer to 32'. I've got a RAM 1500 REBEL. I know my numbers, I've done the math for weights and payload and tongue weight, etc... very helpful to hear from someone who's actually towing a 32' trailer with a similar truck. And good to know how it does in the Smokies, we love it up that way, but do most of our camping down near the coast and salt marshes of SE GA / NE FL.

I was looking at the 2800BH from GD last June, but I decided to buy the 2400BH because I had a half ton then. Just upgraded to a Cummins a month ago, and now I regret not having that lovely duel recliner! After watching this video, I know I could have towed it with my half ton for a season! 🤷🏻 Great job towing my friend! 👍

Thank you. At least you saved yourself the trouble of having to plan every aspect of your trip to stay under payload. It has worked well for us but it is much more convenient to not have to penny pinch on weight. Where you already have the truck if you want to upgrade your rig, I am going to be upgrading my truck in the near future to stay below payload as the kids grow and family needs change. Either way I think we are both headed for a similar destination for our rigs. Congrats on the Cummins! Thanks for watching and happy camping!

@@liveyourfree You were so smooth towing that trailer, I was a wreck towing mine. The half ton Ram I had was a 2012 with a max tow of 8600, so I was pushing it’s capacity. I’m sure you have the max tow package of 11,000 to 12,000? Big deference too if you have air suspension! Thanks for your vids! Keep making them! Happy camping and stay safe!

My wife and I have Ram diesel pickups. Mine is a 1500, hers a 2500. The 1500 needs better than stock tires. Such as the General APT or the Continental Cross Terrain. Also Bilstein 4600 or 5100 series shocks. Upgrading to carbon metallic or better yet, kevlar brake pads will really upgrade the truck a lot. Not everyone will enjoy a 2500 as a daily driver. But the 1500 with the tire and shock upgrades. Will comfortably give most people an excellent tow vehicle. Your driving advice, really applies to all classes of tow vehicles. I have a class A license. And have operated vehicle combinations up to 227,000lbs.
@liveyourfree3 жыл бұрын
I agree with all your points. Especially the advice on tires. Stock tires will not get it done the way it should be. Thankfully, I have the 4 corner air suspension on mine but if I didn't there would have to be something extra there. The coil springs are just too soft. I appreciate your feedback and you taking the time to watch the video. Your experience shows through clear. Stay safe out there!

I tow a 27 foot with a ford f150, no problems but I don't speed and like you stated know how to drive down hills. Everyone talks about tow rating, payload capacity, etc. And being within those numbers but no one talks about the most important number of all, staying within the speed limil.

All great advice. My continued concern is that a half ton just isn't made for this sort of performance (towing extreme length, extreme grades, in extreme wind, etc.). In terms of safety, the best thing someone can do is get a bigger truck in this context, or downsize the trailer. But I get that not everyone can or wants to get a bigger truck as they are not cheap. We upgraded to an F350 because of these exact safety concerns. With a little girl, the added gurth of that truck really helps me sleep whenever we go camping. But like the speaker said, that's just me and that makes me feel the most comfortable.

Well said brother! I use to tow with a half ton Dodge. My wife wanted something larger than the 27' Terry, so I took the opportunity to upgrade to a 3/4 ton Dodge with the HEMI. I couldn't believe the difference. Even pulling the 35', 10,000 pound GVW Sportsmen camper we got , it pulled like a dream. The dealer fixed me up with Reese's Dual Cam Sway control. It totally eliminates sway! My first trip with it was up Black Mountain headed to the KOA in Cherokee. With 4.11 gears, and trans locked in Drive (3rd), I topped the mountain at 55 M.P.H, with my golf car in the 8' bed. We have since downgraded to a 20' hybrid, which actually weighs about 1,000 less than my truck. Easy towing! We are looking to trade for a larger TT, and the Grand Design is near the top of my list. Any problems with it? Thanks for the great video.

This is awesome! My next upgrade for our trailer will have to be to the 3/4 ton truck. I would want the HEMI as well. I'm not familiar with the Reese personally but it's good to hear of another hitch that is good quality. It's great to hear the success stories like this. As for the grand design, we have been extremely happy with it. Honestly, no complaints. I believe you would not be disappointed. Thanks for watching and happy camping!
