Just a little observation, on towing the Crane. you overlooked 1 thing. removal of the "outrigger " pads, those should have been removed and placed on the crane . i say that from growing up in a Family run business . Heavy Construction, Machinery moving.cranes , 14 to 80 ton capacity, forklifts. so in the future if you tow another Hyd crane, be sure to stow the pads before moving. they can come off the ball on the outrigger cylinder's. other than that good job on the tow, ya' made it look easy.

Good advice on removing the outrigger pads before transport; if they need another tow, it will be a suggestion well heeded. Thanks guys.

We had a crane like that on our pad site in South Texas in the oil field. It was BRAND NEW, only second lift, when it’s computer shut everything down. The problem was, that at the time it decided to quit, it lifted a 100’ conductor pipe that was 1/2 inch thick all the way up! Manufacturers of crane, computer and hydraulics came out with no remedy. Hydraulics guy finally got boom and wenches to retract, using two skids tees and 2 pick-ups dragging pipe back out. So it finally gets but tuned up, when the crane company says “NO WAY will we ALLOW that brand new crane to be towed”! We waited 9 hours the next day on a low bed truck, a winch truck, and another crane. That was the next day, and it was 104 degrees in the shade! Tow trucks are AWESOME!!!!

great video guys, was not easier to bring a semi trailer and put the crane on it ? keep the good work :) btw, I see you usually take off the driving axle from trucks. was not required here ?

Hey I don’t know if you guys do this but we just run the seatbelt through the steering wheel to hold it in place versus straps

Not sure that the DOT, or insurance will allow that on a commercial towing company.

That looked heavier than 65,000, I'm sure those tires are heavy duty
@davidkulm67954 жыл бұрын
If you compare the weight to a standard road tractor (semi) with the standard 4' center to center drive axle spread, then we are talking 34,000lbs. However, and while its difficult to say just looking at the video, the distance between drive axles looks greater than 4', more like 5"+. Again, comparing it to a road tractor, another foot between axles adds 6,000lbs bring us to 40,000lbs. Now look at the steer axle tires, those look like super singles to me which probably means that steer axle is rated for at least 20,000lbs, 40,000 + 20,000 = 60,000. The one thing you can't tell simply by watching the video is, how many ply's the drive tires have, tire weight ratings are based on the width and number ply's specifically in the sidewalls. Look at the rotator, I would be willing to bet that with all the wenches, cables and equipment, that rotator weighs around 75,000lbs±, compare that to the crane, I think the 65,000lbs mite include it's rated lifting capacity, look at the video at time 13:33, what do you think?

It weighs more on the back than the front. The back probably weighs 75% of the weight they are claiming because if the crane and the counterweight i would think

I laughed as you said you don’t want your straps getting gooey from grease. As stupid as it sounds any grease on those slings actually voids them as useless by manufacturers spec. Only know that due to a ball busting safety guy

I had to drive one of those from the LA City maintenance yard, to the City maintenance yard in San Diego. That tiny driver's compartment is not meant to be sat in for 300 plus miles. I roasted, with the engine right next to you!

I know you retract the under reach as far as you can when towing, I was wondering, how much weight can the under reach on your rotator support when fully extended?
@michaelseverson98094 жыл бұрын
Our wheel lift is rated: 55,000lbs retracted and 18,000lbs fully extended at 174”. Of course we were not fully extended at all.

What would have happened if it was too high to tow without being overnight? Would you have to get permits or would they fix it onsite? Do you know what was wrong with it?
@CountryEquipmentRentals4 жыл бұрын
In Idaho our towing permit let’s us go higher than 14’ so height wasn’t a problem. The engine wouldn’t start.

Curious why you needed to tie off steering wheel when the front axle is off the ground? For a rear tow, sure, but front tow?
@CountryEquipmentRentals3 жыл бұрын
If by chance you ever have a disconnect (which we never have) the vehicle you’re towing would go straight towards the wheel lift instead of turn onto oncoming traffic. The safety chains keep it from coming off completely, but with steering straight it allows the vehicle to keep in line with the tow truck

There is an episode of the show “Wrecked” with Ohare Towing where they towed a 100 ton crane which was way to heavy to lift up with the under reach. Instead, they chained the under reach to the crane bumper and flat towed it.
@davidkulm67954 жыл бұрын
With a crane like that, could you tow it from the rear if you couldn't get under the boom?
@michaelseverson98094 жыл бұрын
You could truck bar it from the rear but you would need a long wheelbase truck with a lot of front axle weight. If we would not have been able to lift it by it’s axle we would have flat towed it like we do with bigger units.

Actually, a 21,000 pound rating would break at 80k to 100k. 65000 pounds can cause a jerk of twice that with a 6 foot slack to full tight at common speeds. If the speed difference is just 5 mph when the strap tightens, the 65000 pounds is 300,000 pounds. A strap with kinetic energy stretch like Yankum makes would be safer. Two straps would not double the capacity unless they both reached full tight at the exact same time.
@idadho4 жыл бұрын
@3D LAND No, I don't want to see a CR23 KZbin of a strap breaking because he misunderstands how momentum of the tow vehicle can easily multiply the load on the strap. Many fail to understand the load a strap or cable is under from a jerk. If a strap breaks and somebody gets hurt, I will hear about it on the local news. I live a few miles from CR and had my SUV there for service. Great company.

Great video! The Rotator was bigger than the crane :-) That truck is a BEAST, you should have named it Beast Mode! How is the steering with the dual steer front end?
@CountryEquipmentRentals4 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah that would definitely be a good name for it! It feels pretty normal really. Definitely need to keep both hands on the wheel and pay close attention though cause with all that weight and two axles it can veer some of you’re not careful. Other than that you can’t really tell you’re steering two axles.

25 ton? I used to drive one in a scrap yard, Leyland chassis and somebody’s crane on the back with a six cylinder ford Diesel engine. It was a beast :o) double drive six wheel is a great layout for a mobile crane on dirt.

would it not be easier just to say 32.5 tons ??? its no that big though
@michaelseverson98094 жыл бұрын
We just gave the numbers for information purposes, this is not a huge crane. But it would be hard for the average 35 ton wrecker to move it unless you just flat tow it. This is just an average tow for us.

What's your threshold to use the lift axle?
@michaelseverson98094 жыл бұрын
The rear weight 47k when the truck is empty so we run with the pusher axle down all the time. Outside of that it would vary from state to state depending on their axle weight laws.
