Not motorcycle related but I haul a fifth wheel rv, on one trip I realized I missed my turn so the logical thing to do was a U turn. Most of the way through the turn, the corner of the trailer contacted the truck and broke the back window. Windows are about $350, expensive lesson to learn, IF you learn. I did it again the following week.

What a Super fun event. As always thank you for sharing your adventures. End Screen in da house!! Many moons ago when I was still a young invincible man, I had an interesting event happen to me. I am an avid off road truck enthusiast, I was geared up and loaded to go to a 3 day event in Naches WA. I had loaded the trailer the night before at Zero hour. Let's just say it was already tomorrow when finished loading to have it ready to pull out early in the morning. After that I locked up the trailer then went to bed. At about 6am I hooked up the trailer, made sure the lights were working correctly and went inside to have a cup of coffee before leaving town. Caffeine in me and the promise of rock crawling in my head, I dispensed with a trailer walk around. I had just connected it and made sure the lights were working 20 minutes ago and all that it had done is sit at the curb waiting for me to get caffeinated. It's fine..... right!?? I pulled way from the curb and stopped 1/2 block away at the stop sign. As I turned right and began to accelerate I felt a tremendous jerk in the truck like someone had hit me..... but there was no other traffic. By this time I had slowed to a stop at the curb to see WTH happened. I stopped in my tracks at the back of the truck when I saw exactly WTH.... There was my trailer with the tongue on the ground and a broken safety chain (one of two) hanging suspiciously from my hitch on the truck. I had forgotten to flip the bail on the ball. Here is the sequence. I pulled away from the curb at my house, when I Stopped at the stop sign the weight of the trailer pushed tongue off the ball on the hitch and it fell into the crossed safety chains. When I pulled away and turned the force of the turn caused the trailer tongue to go backward wildly and broke one of the chains which then allowed the trailer to lurch to the side and fall off the remaining chain and crash the tongue onto the pavement. Thankfully there was no damage to the ball socket and I was able to put it back on, go around the block and disconnect it. I replaced the safety chains with new and larger diameter link chains reconnected the trailer triple checked everything again including the flip up latch that locks the ball.... Then I went to Naches WA and had epic off road fun..... The end

I pulled a horse trailer (we call them floats in Australia) for many years. Early on, I let someone hitch it for me and, you guessed it, the trailer come off just as I pulled out from the farm to the highway. Lucky the two safety chains held and I was able to get the jockey wheel down to reconnect the ball and socket before I caused an accident. I now have a firm saying "always hitch your own trailer". Great video Amanda, wherever you go, whatever you do, I love your enthusiasm, even when you're tired, or admitting failings :) Hugs from Aus.

ah, yes... the "joys" of pulling a trailer. we parked our motorhome (pulling a trailer with our dirtbikes on it) at the visitor center in moab. some europeans then blocked us in with their truck + trailer. so... i had to unhitch the trailer & move it by myself. fortunately, the dirtbikes were well balanced on it, so it wasn't TOO heavy for me to move it, but i was sweating bullets. good times. :-)

Spotter, Spotter, Spotter. My wife and I spot for each other all the time. Now my story. What possessed me to pull a 42’ 5th wheel through a grocery store parking lot I have no idea but Yes, I took out the entire bed of a pickup turning in the parking lot. Totally destroyed the back end of my brand new RV. Lesson learned. Park on the street. ❗ROAD TRIP❗😁 Was pulling a boat trailer with another boat upside down on it. About 45 min from home and felt the trailer try to push the truck while slowing for a stop light. After the light the trailer was jerking. Pulled over and the nut had come off the ball, and the ball was still in the coupler😅 The safety chains did their job. Also because it's a lifted truck my hitch has a 15 inch drop so I need a peice of chain for the safety chains to hook into. There was no way it was going to touch the ground or bang into the truck. Stopped at Crappy Tire, got a new ball and another adjustable wrench and got home. That's a nice rig. Wish our counties would lay off the damn salt during winter.🤬 Baa...smiles per gallon is all that counts. Your keeping the economy going🤭 You should look into air bags for the truck. They go in between the spring and frame and can be inflated with a small compressor. It will relieve the spring weight from the camper and level the trailer while pulling. Just let air out when camper is not on the truck👍

Trailering story? Kind of motorcycle related as the only time I trailered a bike. I was moving from eastern So Dak to Wyoming. I borrowed a horse trailer from church friends. What I did not realize when they said I would use their horse trailer is the trailer was built to haul 4 Clydesdales... I did not want to know what it weighed. Going over the southern Black Hills the temp hit -8 to -11. I was getting a wonderful 4 MPG with the '98 Grand Cherokee with the 390ci V8. WooHoo!! just blowing money out the tailpipe...

I just got back home after a 3000 mile round trip to MT and back all the while trailering my CRF 250L behind my Subaru WRX. The wooliest part of the trip was driving through a cold front coming into Livingston MT - the temp dropped from 102 to 68 in about 20 miles and in typical Livingston fashion that meant incredible side winds and gusts. The weather app said the gusts were up to 62 mph and I think that was pretty spot on 😂.

Wish I'd known about the event, I would have ridden to that. A nice two day ride from SW IN. End Crew.. well,.. you asked for a trailer story. I have a trailer I use when I must to haul the bike in the midst of winter SOUTH. But, I have a great aversion to trailers. When my father was 15 (fourteen years before I entered the world) he was helping his brother-in-law move. The brother-in-law was thrown from the trailer and hit by a Greyhound bus, dad managed to hang on. He had to explain to his pregnant, 19 year old sister her unborn child would never meet his father. Heard the story enough times growing up that even now, at age 70, I view trailers with aversion and caution.....

Oh yes, I have a “trailer story” 🤪. I was pulling a three rail dirt bike trailer in the Georgia/North Carolina mountains behind a VW camper van 😱 and each curve seemed to yank on the back of the van 🤔, so I stopped at a turnout to check on the trailer and discovers the mounting bolts that kept the axle in line had beat out the holes in the frame allowing the axle to steer side to side all on its own 😳!!! I had to drag it 500 miles home with it continuing to dart from side to side when ever it took a fancy to 😵💫.

@pippacarron18613 жыл бұрын
As someone who's towed all sorts of things from single axle bogies to fully loaded horse trailers for decades, I'd totally encourage you to do just that. Find a big empty carpark. Reversing is easy once you get the hang of the fact the steering-wheel turn is counter-intuitive. You must get into the habit of turning around in your seat and looking out the back window, not watching in wing mirrors. It's much safer and easier that way. Have fun. It's a great skill to have. Many times I've been at the rubbish dump and helped other people out by backing their cars/trailers for them, even blokes.
