A few weeks ago I bought this sinking boat called the Dora Lynn. My plan is to turn this boat into a crab stand for the upcoming crabbing season. The problem is I have to tow it 30 miles home across the Chesapeake Bay. The other problem is that there are a couple of leaks in the boat so it's actively sinking. I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew with this project.

@IrishAcres I grew up on a small farm out in alvin and didn't get on a boat until I was 27 and got a job as a deckhand on a cruise ship for American Cruise Lines and when I was there I had alot of fun but you work 12-18hrs a day 7 days a week for 9 months. I hated that when I was there but as soon as I came back home I instantly missed being on the water

Tongue weight stabilizes a trailer. Having too much weight on the back is what makes a trailer get squirrely. No one's probably going to read this but I just wanted to make sure people understood that because you said it the other way.. the more weight you have on the tongue the more stable your trailer is going to fallow.

He said way to much tongue weight and if you have ever towed with to much tongue weight, you’ll know what he talking about. You need a fair amount of weight on the tongue for stability, but too much will destroy it. I’ve had the front wheels of my truck chirping after a dip in the road because the tongue was too heavy. At 62, I’ve finally learned the art of a balanced trailer on long hauls🤣

Luke I spent $50k buying and upgrading my jeep for playing. But started my business in truckin with a day cab running coast to coast slerping across the seat's until I had enough for a Coffin sleeper. Did thst for 27 yrs. Then sold it to work for somebody else for another 20 yrs. Till I retired last year. You do what you have to do to make your way to your dream's

Quick note when towing dead weight like that boat, put some sort of light drag off the stern. That way the vessel is a link in the chain and a combination of the drag plus thrust will keep everything in line.

As I said previously, using that old crab boat as your crab stand is a terrific idea. It will advertise itself and will be very fitting for an old crab boat. Good luck in setting it up. I’ll definitely be down there to see it in action and pick up some crabs. While you’re at it, try to get some oysters to sell as well from other growers. That would certainly help in terms of more income and merchandise sales. Great job!!!

Almost 50 years old and have been lucky enough to spent most of my life in the marshes and sounds of Eastern NC. Breaks my heart to see all of the traditions I learned as a kid disappearing. I don't think your average hunter these days can relate to setting out 150 solid wood canvasback decoys or hunting a lay down box. Forget about launching a wooden dory off the beach into the surf setting gill net. For the most part it's a lost art. It's hard to see my beloved Outer Banks becoming something else. Fact of the matter it is no longer mine, it has been owned by outsiders for a couple of generations now and they cater to the tourist and the Almighty dollar. Hell, maybe every generation before me said the same thing. But when I see your videos and your passion for your work and keeping the traditions alive it gives me hope. You are making a difference and putting your money where your mouth is and it comes across in every video. Your doing good work and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Good luck to you and I know you do already, but savor every second on the water.

When towing a boat, use two lines and tie both to a tire in the center.... makes a good shock absorber and keeps the cleats from Getting ripped off. Old Alaskan Salty dog trick. That's how we do it when getting towed over the bars on The Copper River Flats.

hey Luke. I wrote out what you said about your crab boat stand. And truly think it should go on or around the crab stand for costumers to read framed as an Easter egg when they are waiting to order. Luke McFadden: "As a business person, I understand that there are better options than turning an old Delta build crab boat into a crab stand. For kids to be able to come to the crab stand and experience a real crab boat and actually see a boat that worked on the water is so important. To get the next generation familiarized with the industry and show them - put a face and an actual thing. If we want this industry to thrive and have a rebirth and really last, I think it's crucial that we get the younger generation involved in the water. I think it's really important for kids to understand where their food comes from and that we are the ones that are most invested in keeping the natural resource around and being good stewards of it."

I have to say.. you’ll never find another line of work where you’ll make the friendships, connections and generally find a sense of belonging and fulfillment other than on the water.. so long as you’re a water lover. Keep it up Luke! You’re an inspiration and an affirmation.

Ahh, brings back lots of memories for me. I was a chicken-necker back in the late 1980's-1992 or so - had a 30' sloop over in Mill Creek at Leo James place (next to Cantler's ), now LJ Marina. Leo James was a crabber and a super nice guy. I was your age when my friends and I would sail out, drop 6 or 8 lines out with the chicken (we used cheap drumsticks, but same thing) and pull up crabs all day and into the night. Good times for sure.
