This really help me today. A tow guy came to tow my car and he had no idea how to release the wheels. I googled for help and your video came up. The guy was going to give up but I persevered and I released it and he tow the car to the dealership for maintenance.

Thank you for this video. I dispatch highway service patrol trucks in a large metropolitan area, and our trucks rolled up on one of these vehicles stalled out in the center lane of free-flow traffic on a freeway. Needless to say it was a dangerous situation. Thanks to your video I was able to get the information about the tool location and how to use it so my drivers could get the vehicle shifted into neutral and pushed to the shoulder before it caused a crash.

There was not a plug but yes there is a manual release for the E-brake located in the left rear compartment by the first aid kit and the same handle is used to release it as well. I really should have included that.. Thanks for the comment!

Many thanks for this video. My 2008 X5 won't start and has to be towed. Tow truck driver didn't know how to unlock the parking brake. This was extremely helpful in putting the car in neutral and getting the car onto the tow truck! Extremely helpful in a very frustrating circumstance - apparently, the starter was broken !

Allstate made me take a test on all of this before I could service BMW's, Porsche, Volkswagen, or smart cars. While taking the tests it all seemed useless but in the field it makes all the difference. Good video Gordy!

This video saved my butt when my x5 wouldn't start and I couldn't figure out how to get it to neutral to tow! Watched it on a nearly dead iphone while stuck out in nowhere, and voila. Thanks! One other tip.. you can't release the parking brake if the trunk is open. I figured that out only after much anguish as well.

My 2013 bmw x5 35i turbo dont got this setup.... all that is down there in side the cup holder is ...looks like 12 mm nut on a threaded shank and that full threaded shank has an allan key recession in it.. so mine take an allen key.... ty great video... question.... ok so this "orange tool" is for the Park selection override to neutral and Electric Brake release.......so the question now it how is the brake released with a dead battery on a 2012 bmw x5 35i/????mmmmmm

I actually had to do that with BMW X6 couple days ago. I first couldn't remember where the release "hole" was, so I looked up the manual. Shift release instructions were included in cars manual as well.. Gladly I never had to release the parking brake, I've never had BMW so dead that it didn't take some power to release the parking brake at least. Maybe I've been lucky.

Glad it helped John! I do regret now that I didn't show the e-brake release procedure though. If you don't know how to release this car from park and no owners manual it can make loading it pretty tough depending on the situation. Thanks for watching and the comment!

Gordy, did that X5 not have the little security plug that you have to remove with the ignition key before you can use the red T-handle ? I've had to use that procedure on 2 X5's and an X7 and they all had it. By the way, there is a manual handbrake release cable in the same storage compartment as that red handle. You have to use the "T" end to lever it up. I had to phone BMW to get all that on the first one I did !! There are times when this job is just SOOO much fun aren't there LOL Stay safe

Even though I think it is a crock of manure, I can understand the shift by wire (it's a idiots delight sales gimmick). But the emergency brake by wire is just totally wrong. Shame on BMW for producing that. -

Newer bmw are making it where there is no Shift Release unless you climb under the car..that is what bmw told me

My 2011 e70 35d diesel with 6 speed ZF tyranny has nothing in this hole...but the cap is there under the cup holder. If I figure out how to manually release to Neutral I will edit this comment. Cars getting Way Too Complicated, and why does BMW not put this in the owner's manual????

I have a 2008 X5 that got towed to the shop with a no crank/no start complaint. Used the red t-handle to put it into neutral but it won't even turn. It's basically stuck in Park. This might be a tough one to figure out.

Can’t really figure out if designers are supersmart and they became stupid. All these hassles just to put the vehicle to neutral. I have the same problem and I can’t even turn the cover loose with that tool, it was really shut. I’ll just probably force to yank the cover out tomorrow. So frustrating that I promised myself not to buy post 2005 BMWs anymore. Japanese cars never had these problems.
