True grit. Townes van Zandt was the greatest songwriter who ever lived, and no-one can deliver his songs like he did. My unchallenged favorite ever since I came under his spell some 30 years ago.

C. 1994. I spent an hour or so alone with him while a friend went to the liquor store for him and us. Mostly for him. Man I wish I had been writing that stuff down because that guy was pulling stories out of the atmosphere. I believed every word. Sweet guy. I'm not sure if I had ever been in the presence of genius before. Kind of leaves your mouth hanging open.

I hadn't heard "Old Shep" in nearly seven decades--I wish TVZ had sung it straight. My late father would sometimes sing that song from my mother's and his bedroom when I was a child about to drift off to sleep in my own room down the hall.
