If I remember correctly, the creator referred to it as being more of a "toy" than a game, which sort of fits your description of making your own fun with it.

A Studio Ghibli-style town building game would be awesome, if it let you have both the Japanese & Western Medieval aesthetics - and especially for Tom if you could get as ramshackle as the design of Howl's Moving Castle.

Even with it being more "toy", "relaxation", "creativity tool" than game, I still feel like Townscaper needs a little push to give it more life and enjoyment. Maybe it's just one thing, maybe it multiple things... I don't suppose I could know for sure unless they were put in and tried out. I know most of these suggestions have been mentioned at one point or another, but here they are. 1: Aesthetic City Sets - I know this was mentioned in the video by Tom, and is probably the most requested feature, but it's true. The game's creator said the went for a Venetian sort of feel for things, and even one or two different ones would do a LOT to increase the longevity and flexibility of it. An East Asian one would be obvious, then maybe a winter/northern one. But each one added would drastically change things up and open up the possibilities for city builds. 2: Tile Placements - Everything in Townscaper is built around block placements, IE three dimensional polygons. The surfaces of what shows on the faces of the polygons is dictated by color chosen plus the blocks around them in an organic manner. Which is really neat, relaxing, and well done. At the same time, being able to put windows or doors on wall faces where wanting, making ground from street to park as desired, adding vines, or etc. would do a lot in being able to make an area feel like your own. Even "3D" tile face extentions like signs, areas with streetlights and benches, market stalls like Tom mentioned, or other things could be manageable I think, if they were done as 3D spaces of their own and could be connected to other tiles or covered up as normal. 3: City Life - Few things would add more life to Townscaper than more life. The current birds are a nice touch, and some other random wildlife wouldn't be too hard, like fish or whales or butterflies. Above all human life would be the best for the experience though, as it would make the cities feel less like ruins or ghost towns and more like lived in spaces. Wouldn't have to be anything too complex like conversations or interactions or such, but even just people moving around would be wonderful, entering and exiting buildings sometimes... that sort of thing. 4: Objectives This is where the debate comes in whether Townscaper is best left as a sort of "toy", or if it would be worth the work to add a mode more "game" like. It wouldn't need to be anything too complex, just something where you have limitations or objectives to meet that could provide some challenge or such. 5: Environmental Effects - Another thing that could help a city feel more real and offer some different perspectives on what you've build, the ability to have day and night, occasionally have clouds or rain, or have slight tides or waves. Just some thoughts. I remember you playing this before Tom, and I'm always glad to have a chill time watching you putz around in something like Townscaper here or Tracks. 👍

Apparently you need to build up a detatched platforn in a smooth connected shape (as the weird grid allows) and if you do it right you get HOVER BLADES at the bottom. Cool eh? Thought you might wanna try it out.
