It’s like they based all their ideas of toxic masculinity on cartoon bullies rather than on real human behavior

This is exactly what happened. All the writers are very immature and all their "insights" into human behavior has been mediated through simplistic entertainment tropes that they've mistaken for actual representation of real life.

@@elongatedmanforever1252 Everything I hear about “toxic masculinity” basically boils down to being a plain old insensitive jerkwad, traits that no one associated with masculinity besides the biggest assholes. I wouldnt have much of an issue with it if there was a contrasting “positive masculinity”, but there isn’t, I wonder why that is. The entire concept seems to just be a ginormous strawman against males and manhood.
@lupinsredjacket3191

The writers of this show have such a 2D perspective of the concept of "masculinity", it's actually hilarious. They seem to connect "masculinity" to negative traits like "arrogance", "narcissism", or "meanness" when those are just negative *human* traits that can be applied to both men & women equally. These writers probably think that the concept of "femininity" involves being "weak" or "overtly girly" (wearing make up & frilly dresses, etc.) There are all kinds of masculinity just like there are all kinds of femininity. Like, the wrath of a mother whose child is in danger? That's badass feminity right there. The writers have such a narrow view of both concepts, if you ask me.

So toxic masculinity is generally defined as the things you mentioned. Arrogance due to either overconfidence in ones ability since a "real man can do x on their own" or a "real man doesn't need help". Narcissism isnt too connected with it last i checked and as for meaness again not too connected other then casual sexism but to clarify masculinity in of itself is perfectly fine but there are aspects that can get twisted and become toxic. Granted all of this gender stuff is cultural and ultimately would be arbitrary if it wasnt for the culture. I dont believe any of it has a strong basis in reality

@@indigowendigo8165 as cliché as he's made to be, at 2:40 he shows a tiny bit of character development, going from an "all talk" dude to someone actually reconizing her abilities, still in his smug way of seeing things, even admitting that he has to grow and learn in some aspects. I thought it was legit a good message, as people can change and be better. Then, just like she ramdonly thought she loved him, the girl doesn't like him anymore, the dude is physically hurt and his growth meant nothing, becoming comical relief that was pushed to the side lines. That was disappointing. Tl;dr: the characters in this show have flutuating emotions that just lead to wasted potential.

Aaster is surprisingly cute, like a himbo with no seriously bad intentions. They were clearly meant to be displaying the stereotypes of a 'bad man' but I'm honestly not annoyed at all, he's like a kid, and he _is_ just a kid, so not only do I find him entertaining but reasonable within his actions. Sure, we still don't know why he's acting like this, (though it's probably through enabling. And you'd think the people around him getting annoyed and faking their friendliness towards him is justified for feeling that, yet surprise surprise, that's actually another form of enabling), but he clearly has no malicious intentions and just wants to impress her. He can get petty, as seen by the end, but if you're suddenly going to snap at me right after you kept willfully agreeing with me, then I'd be confused and petty too. Again, he's just a kid, let him grow as a person and don't punish him physically for trying to learn that lesson.

From clips and reviews, I've seen he doesn't really seem like as bad a guy as the show makes him out to be. Like yeah, he was kinda cocky and overconfident but he's not evil. Hell, I don't even think he was actively going out of his way to be like that, it's just how he is. Also in a lot of these clips, other than maybe the compass thing and that's kinda pushing it, it almost is like he's looking out for Rosemary or just trying to impress her, that's not inherently a bad thing, a lot of younger kids try to do that when they have a crush on someone. Also in the climbing scene, he actually compliments her basically telling her "good catch" and yeah he calls her "Sprout" or whatever that sounded less derogatory toward her and more of just a nickname cuz she is actually shorter than him. Idk why I'm analyzing this so damn much I don't even watch this fucking show.

Honestly... Aster's not the biggest misogynist, he's just prideful. He says "nice looking out" when Rosemary helps him. He has a lot of pride as shown in the swinging axe scene, but Parnell (shown as a good male character) jumped off into the misty void as well (though this was done as a "my life sucks" joke I think...) He keeps calling her Rhubarb because she didn't bother correcting her (due to infatuation) until she was at her wits end and then she angrily corrects him saying her name's Rosemary. I'm an angry girl too, so I might've been frustrated too, but the frustration is more in myself for not correcting him. But yeah being angry at people who don't deserve it isn't good. He undermines Rosemary, but I see that more as "I'm a prideful and strong guy who has to prove his worth to cute girls" instead of "I'm a misogynistic asshole who thinks women can't do things". Given I didn't see the whole scene, but from my perspective, Aster's end where he's impressed with Rosemary, then Rosemary implies she doesn't want to hang out with him anymore, then him calling her stuck up comes out of nowhere. If they wanted him to be a toxic male, they should've had him ask her our and her say no then have him throw a tantrum or something. I know it's a magical show, but that doesn't mean "Write the people characters as stupidly as possible". There's too many leaps of logic.

Snapdragon overreacted. Just make clever retorts, like -Huh. Seems like you can't stop thinking about the sight of me. -What? Upset your your little mermaid wifey was just pretend? -You didn't seem to hate it at first. What was that lame pickup line you used? -I'm sure you'll get along with the mermaids, too. How many do you plan on proposing to? -Me, a girl? Ha, you wish. Edit: Imagining a back and forth argument instead of what happened, I can picture that episode focusing on them as a side story. They are distracted arguing and get separated from the group. Classic "enemies turned to bros" trope begins, and by the end of the episode they actually understand each other. Given their different personalities, they could balance each other out nicely and assist in character growth. Edit 2: Heck, why not bring Aster into this? After Aster gets his foot crushed while everyone laughs, Snap could intervene and help Aster with his foot, since he challenged Sage's misandry in that episode. That could show that part of what sets Snapdragon apart is his empathy, which could get Sage thinking about how she might've been wrong about men. Amaryllis, being Snapdragon's friend, would probably dial down her bullying of Aster, and Aster would become their himbo friend. Aster's reaction towards Snap in the mermaid costume would be a foil to Cal's after Amaryllis drives him away: Aster could mistake Snapdragon for a girl, but then when he realizes it's actually Snapdragon he could laugh it off and tell him he looks way too good in that costume. Then he could walk off with some other people, maybe with his parting words being something like telling Snap to introduce his sister, if he has one. This would still make Snap insecure, but Amaryllis could point out it was a compliment and use it to prove Cal was just a weirdo for reacting the way he did. That would give Amaryllis a reason to stop worrying about Snap's insecurity bc she would think it was all patched up now. THEN would come the "let's go smash stuff until you feel better" line.

Some thoughts: 0:01 That perspective though. That's awful. I love how teachers in HGA just assign inexperienced kids dangerous tasks without any actual assistance or guidance, therefore perpetually endangering them but teaching them nothing. How do you use a compass to solve a maze? Pretty sure that's not how mazes work. Astor basically admits he judged Rosemary on her looks and learned to try to do better THEN gets punished by Parsley and the teacher. How dare he learn his lesson on his own! Speaking of Parsley - she threw her hammer behind her and it landed on Astor's foot. Astor. Who is standing next to her. Also, gotta love how Rosemary - who is a total meathead normally - becomes super competent just for this episode. 3:31 That flame is dangerously close to that web decoration and we later learn they have to rely on firefighters to put out fires at this MAGICAL SCHOOL. 4:13 The ring just vanishes. They could have had him drop it in surprise, but that would take effort. Why are Snapdragon's pupils white? (I know I know "Oh my God! You can't just ask someone why their pupils are white!") Here’s how I would rewrite and fix the episode with Aster and Rosemary in it. This would take place RIGHT after the scene where Rosemary takes charge and starts guiding them with the compass. So instead of actually getting them out of the maze, Rosemary would instead end up getting them lost instead, That’d be a cool plot twist. I could imagine after getting them lost even further, Rosemary has a revelation and thinks to herself “oh my God. I’m not as good as I thought I was”. She proceeds to sulk and negatively compare herself to her mother, then Aster awkwardly comforts her, and after a few failed attempts at joking, he sighs and quietly looks around at the maze and the state they’re both in, and then confesses to her that he knows he’s not that skilled or bright either, but he acts as though he is because he’s insecure and doesn’t want to seem vulnerable to anyone, and that’s why he’s been acting pretentious for the entire day. This gauges Rosemary’s interest, and she asks Aster what he’s trying to accomplish by doing this, and he tells her that he came from a small town where he was seen as talented and remarkable in his skills, but after being accepted into high guardian academy, he soon had the same realisation that Rosemary herself did in that he found out he wasn’t as good as he was hyped up to be previously, and he became insanely insecure in his own fighting and scavenging abilities, so he’s been trying to compensate for them this entire time. He then hesitantly apologises for speaking down to her after that as well. They then bond for a while, and after Rosemary gets a hold of herself, she stands up and offers her hand to Aster with a smile, telling him that they should work together to complete the maze this time. After some hard work where they both fight through the maze and try many different paths, they finally make it out. At the end of the episode, they tell each other that they should train together sometime since they both have a lot to work on. They laugh at their new inside joke and high-five each other, establishing a solid friendship and even potential future relationship. There. The episode has been fixed. And one of the only male characters in the show becomes a human and not a walking stereotype. It wasn’t hard at all.

They could actually give aster some character, all of this facade of him being amazing could just be a mask to hide his insecurities, and when rosemary confronts him about it instead of just folding aster could have gotten angry, which would be a more appropriate emotion and reaction, and have an argument with rosemary, after which they both develop a competitive enemies relationship, in one of those fights aster gets hurt by something rosemary said about him, and just leaves, rosemary would feel guilty and would go say sorry to him, after which they talk a little about their past, and slowly, they would go from enemies to being good friends, with aster opening up more to rosemary about his family issues, they could have made him quite likable and give him his own arc, but unfortunately that didn't happen

I hate with a capital 'H' when they try to show how strong and capable women are by making the men around them incapable morons, in a funny way it's actually kinda sexist, sends a message that a woman can only be more capable than a man when the man is well someone like Link (Astor).

You know in shows like RWBY and Steven Universe which have all female leads and girl power themes they at least have good male characters. This show just hates men and treats masculinity in general as some horrible thing that needs to be destroyed. Considering the track records of the creators, it doesn't surprise me.

I think my biggest issue with the characters in this show is that when one of the girls has unlikable traits, they're written realistically and are given redeeming qualities and moments(Amaryllis, Thyme, etc.) but every flawed male character is either given no redeeming qualities like Cal or is just a punching bag like Aster. Also he literally never appears after this episode lol

Aster: "I knew you were stuck up." Teacher: "Wow! Son, we need to have a word." OH my god, that writing, hahah. Parsley: *drops hammer on Aster's foot* "Whoops! ;D" Teacher: "Haha, that's what you get white devil!" Seriously, I've seen douchebags in shows get their karma, but this was just done so poorly and bad. Aster didn't even really say anything warranting a "We need to talk" from the teacher, compared to having his foot possibly fractured. Gotta love characters solely being made to be a verbal, physical, and social punching bag for the writer. It's like I'm reading DeviantArt stories created by edgey teenagers all over again.

The weird thing is that the only non toxic male characters are gone in five seconds too. Any more MAJOR male characters that aren't toxic are frame as backstory character development for the main character or barely there at all. The only non toxic males have been married in this show.. and even that is not a guarentee due to amarylis (Purple haired girl) backstory.

Okay but... not gonna lie, cutting out that last bit where he calls Rosemary stuck up and she complains about him, I actually think Rosemary and Aster would be cute together with a bit of development. Like, seeing Aster tense up on instinct when Rosemary started taking charge, followed by him singing her praises to a whole crowd of people is actually really adorable??? Like, he's a bit confused but he's got the spirit. I dunno, I just think there's a lot of character development potential, with Rosemary learning to stop judging a book by the cover and see him as more than just a pretty face and an overconfident, annoying attitude, and Aster going from "woah she's cute" to "woah she's cute AND SHE CAN KICK MY ASS" and learning to cooperate with her.

One of the problems with High Guardian Spice is that the School/City doesn't feel like a lived in world. It feels like a setpiece for "That Happened" Tumblr stories where everyone claps at the end. Why does Rosemary not know what a Transgendered person is? How come Snap Dragon doesn't know what transition magic is? In a world where people can use magic to become animals, not knowing you can change your gender is odd. Is the world of HGS worse than what we see, possibly. But that's not what we SEE. Take Cal who tries to be transphobic to Snapdragon. Only Cal is transphobic. Everyone claps and stands up for our crossdressing mermaid. Similarly, Caraway is a well respected professor with positive character traits like being transgendered or being transgendered, and who could forget being transgendered. He never faces any blowback for being transgendered even though the voice is a dead giveaway. Not even from Cal. It's like the show is a safespace so the characters never face any real conflict. The only characters who cause problems in this show are one-dimensional jerks who don't last more than an episode. Our characters never have to grow or learn anything to overcome conflict. They're innately good or already know what to do so they can be a symbol of "Girl Power". This is most evident with Aster and Rosemary. Aster is a smug jerk and haughty, hyping up his awesomness...but he's really a goofball and klutz. But so is Rosemary. She's been a goofball and klutz the entire series up to this point. All of a sudden Rosemary's klutziness is nowhere to be seen and she is extremely competent, even pulling Aster up one handed, all so she can put Aster in his place for being a toxic male. What did Rosemary learn the entire episode? Nothing beyond don't fall for idiots. Instead Rosemary exists to teach Aster (and the male audience) that girls rule and you need to deal with it. And then everyone claps when Parsley throws her hammer. Aster could've been a skilled but klutzy guy Rosemary had to overcome...an actual explanation for his haughtiness. Aster and Rosemary could've been goofball rivals who learn from one another and even respect each other as rivals at the end. He could've been a positive (recurring?) male character. Because he's a setpiece for toxic males this doesn't happen.

"It's like the show is a safespace so the characters never face any real conflict." I couldn't say it better ! That's, for me at least, the biggest turn off when I get into a fictionnal story. Very unfortunately, golden people like you, who take time to write contructive criticism won't be heard by the author, who just block everyone that don't completely love the show unconditionally.

It maybe a shocker but honestly just don't like anyone in this show, including Snapdragon due to more of the actions of the characters themselves, is either dumb or animalistic with their apparent voices of reasoning just sounding like excuses.. maybe because I was grown up as a "hard ass" but there are a lot of holes that make the scenes become none sense. For example: When Young Snapdragon was running away from his older brother with his rabbit. Why was he running away from him? Was his brother going to kill the rabbit? Was his brother just teasing with Snap and don't know any better ? Where was the father beforehand ? Was Snap going run to his father (what a normal kid would do) from this ? Why didn't Snap just push his brother away (is literally the least violent thing you could do in this situation)? At that point is basically everyone's fault that Snap has some childhood trauma from being feminine which I don't like and having Cale as a tool, a massive prick to be used for getting Snap over the edge to violence so he can talk about his issues is just scummy towards the writers, once is fine but twice, especiallysince Snap would know ahead of time to tell the professor if he can change boats but apparently did not too ??? Why can't any of this be natural at all ????

Why don't they just make them choke down some of that transition potion and live as a woman for a month as an 'object lesson'? That trans-potion idea is under-appreciated for how self-defeating it is to the show's agenda. Btw, does this show remind you of the 1980s 'Dungeons & Dragons' cartoon?

Lol, it would actually have been cool to see an episode where all the students are gender-swapped. Then they'd learn to appreciate the way they were but also empathize with the opposite sex. It could have done wonders for helping cure Sage's misandry, as well as Cal's misogyny. It could have also led to Snap either embracing his femboy side, or questioning whether he felt more comfortable as a male or a female.
@guygadbois3010
@guygadbois3010 2 жыл бұрын
@@jonquilgemstone That's just it, if such a potion was available people would do it all the time, particularly in medieval-ish fantasy settings like in the show. For example, during war time, you'd transition females to males who have better muscle mass for fighting. During times of starvation, you'd transition males to female because females require fewer calories. If you thought a male/female body benefitted you in other ways, like for your job, you'd use it there too. Plus, they have shapeshifters in the show, which makes wearing a different body than yours at birth even more mundane. Like so much of the show, they really didn't think it through.
@MustacheDLuffy
@MustacheDLuffy 2 жыл бұрын
@@guygadbois3010 the whole idea of the potion was to just show that it was easier to transition and it didn’t need to be met with harsh criticism. If there was a potion that made females as strong as men it could be effective in a show that tries to prove women to be more capable than men. It’s not that easy to transition in real life and because the show tries to push a real world agenda is it not that easy or usable in the show. That’s why the purple guy freaks out when snapdragon is a mermaid because guys can’t effectively change their genders in the real world and not the show
@xenrusxenomorph2268
@xenrusxenomorph2268 2 жыл бұрын
@@MustacheDLuffy Though I would say that the reason people keep rewriting and seeing these characters in a different light is because they are effectively... Highschoolers. Highschoolers are toxic, mean, abusive, and their hormones are out of control. The Purple haired guy is definitely someone who thinks that and has probably been raised to think "Men are men, Women are women, Men aren't pretty, women are, Get a girl, you gotta get a girl. Be a ladies man." All of those in repeated succession are toxic ideas. And him not being able to handle a feminine man is proof that his upbringing and his homelife didn't prepare him for a bigger city. and he might even be spoiled too. But they don't learn a lesson, they can't be used to make the other characters learn a lesson either. ITs just "Look this man is bad he is bad he is very bad because he is a man and all STRAIGHT men are assholes." Snap dragon, An effeminette teenager, and someone more in tune with his emotions... Is to become a transgender female because "Real men aren't in touch with their feelings. You're different from other men because you have feelings. You can't relate to a girl because you don't have the same chromosomes. So why not become a girl" is basically his character arch to boot. Also to answer the initial question of the potion.. Just make it not a plot point of a magic potion, make it more dangerous and needing to be handled by a professional or even talk to people about how their are dangerous but nessesary options that The headmaster needed to undergo for the sake of him needing to be the gender he needs to be. The potion is a quick solution but undermines the core aspects of the plight those in transition and those associated with being trans go through. There is soo much more involved. and the show washes it away with a potion. I am not trans nor do I speak for trans people. this is just something I have collected from different comments and videos.
