oh wow that's really upsetting, I don't believe that only some are affected, i think a lot are but can't pinpoint it and/or won't admit it. I just got a new mattress and even though it was recently manufactured.. the smell was strong and after just 1 hour of sleeping on it the first night I was awoken by my partner about how she can't sleep and its the fumes etc. After I came to I realized that the headache and sore throat I was ignoring because I was focusing on just getting to sleep was caused by the fumes and we were sick for a day after. Its airing out now with full window open and fan blowing on it as its laid vertically on its side. I will also put baking soda on it in a few days then vacuum it sometime after. Though that all seems pointless now that I'm hearing you had issues even a year after.
@michaelslifecycle2 жыл бұрын
@@StevoHDA Yea it was upsetting. I’ve never tried the baking soda tricks so I hope that works for you. It is unfortunate because the memory foam really is comfortable but for me it wasn’t worth the trade off. Let me know if that works for you. I managed to find a used organic latex mattress that was about $2000 new for only $350 on Facebook marketplace. It was only used for about 2 days. I’ve come to find that there is actually a huge market for “used” mattresses in most major cities mainly because they are just returns from people that have 100 night free trials and things like that. (This is a long comment so I’m sorry for the length but I think it will save you money if you’re considering a new mattress) Basically, mattress companies have found that offering a better return policy has resulted in more overall sales but nowadays, most mattresses ship in a box and it's nearly impossible to get that genie back in the bottle to ship back and also the mattress is used, so what a lot of companies will do is just give you a refund and tell you to do whatever you want with the mattress. Some mattress companies refer the return to other companies and those companies have local representatives that go pickup the used mattresses, sell them via Craigslist or Facebook or however they want, and the seller takes a cut of the used mattress sale, the company middle manning it takes a cut, and the mattress company takes the rest. This way, they can at least get some money back for the mattresses instead of just losing completely. The mattress companies don't want to spend the time and money it takes to get returned mattresses, Re package them, and sell them as used so they end up on Facebook even if it's only been used for 1 day. So some people will use a mattress for a night, know that they don't like it, and instantly get a refund because most companies offer 100 night free trials. That's how I got my mattress for so cheap. I was avoiding the organic mattresses in the first place because the memory foam was cheaper for the one that I wanted but through this method I managed to get a really nice one for very cheap. Anyways, I hope the baking soda and airing out works for you, because I never actually tried that myself but you will get it figured out eventually and finally be able to get some good sleep. Good luck to you.

Is there a toxicology lab test that can be done to see if you are being poisoned by your current mattress? I am on my second memory foam mattress due to being overheated at night and chronic insomnia. I received my Tempur-Pedic -LuxeAdapt Mattress told that it would be more comfortable and help with low back issues, circulation and keep me cooler at night. Two months later I began having horrible shooting pains in my head on top of my current migraines. I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia with awful fatigue from the medication I had been prescribed. I could no longer work. Then I began having Pain all over my body in my joints, muscles and weakness. Now my hands are so bad I drop things because I can't grasp them. I'm being treated now for Fibromyalgia. Every morning, I have difficulty getting up and walking. I am in so much pain and exhausted! This is not the life I desire to live. Now, I realize I have a toxic mattress. I wake up every 2 hours from being over heated my lower back, spine, skin hurts and I have pins and needles sensations or tingling all over my body. The Tempur-Pedic application states that there is carbon dioxide in our room when we sleep. We try to remember to keep our bedroom door open because of that reason. We have been puzzled why it reads that until now.

Most people that are allergic to latex are allergic to this protein which is only present in air dried or air cured products like latex gloves. Otherwise, good video, very informative.

@NaturalMattressFinder6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, thanks for writing in. Your mattress will likely be offgassing like that for a couple of years. The smell will eventually vanish or fade, but VOC's below a detectable amount using human scent alone will continue to offgass into your living environment. What to do now depends on several factors. Do you still have your old mattress as a backup? I think you should definitely go natural. But you have to be ready to pay a premium for a natural mattress. Consider that you will be getting a more durable product with at least 2x lifespan and will not slowly be poisoning you while you sleep. Unfortunatly, the manufacturers that I represent are US based only. There are good natural latex mattresses available in Europe. Just make sure it is third party certified ie. Eco Institut, GOLS. Type in "certifications" in the search bar on my site for more info about third party certifications. Any serious company will have one and it proves that you're getting genuine natural latex and not a latex blend. Note that latex is at the other end of the spectrum in regards to response time. Memory foam is very slow, latex is the fastest. Personally, I don't enjoy that sinking feeling that you get from memory foam. All the best, Daniel.

I'm not quite sure why mattress companies are able to sell mattresses made with toxic materials. It is a complex issue that is a mix of health and politics. In spite of this, people can do their due diligence when purchasing a new mattress. They can make sure they are aware of the components of the mattress and its possible toxicity. I recommend going with a natural latex mattress, simply because they are more durable, breathable, non-toxic and they are made with more sustainable materials. @NaturalMattressFinder4 жыл бұрын
Hi Suzy, it is hard to pinpoint what exactly is causing the irritation. The mattress may be less breathable than your old one. But it may also be a reaction to the VOCs via you respiratory system. The VOCs are at their worst when the mattress is new, so if you are able to air it out outside, that would be ideal. However this may be a challenge, especially this time of year. Do you still have your old mattress? Maybe you can do an A/B test to see if it is really the mattress that is causing the reaction. If you want to compare natural latex mattresses, check out the comparison table at www.naturalmattressfinder.com/latex-mattresses/. What do you know about Lucid mattresses? We just bought a memory foam from them. It has been offgassing for a week in the room with the windows open and the fans running. It smells like seaweed, not too bad of a smell but still not something I want to sleep with
@NaturalMattressFinder5 жыл бұрын
Well, if it smells like seaweed, it's probably not from a natural source. Lucid mattresses are among the most cheaply made mattresses. They're basically several layers of polyurethane foam wrapped in a polyester cover. The memory foam in your mattress is only for the top layer, the rest is different densities of poly foam. These types of foams tend to develop indentations and body impressions over time. These foams are certified "Certi Pur", a certification made up by the very companies that produce the foam. It simply means that the VOC's are below an arbitrary level that the companies have determined as safe for you. This mattress will keep off-gassing VOC's and polluting your house. You are only smelling the detectable smell. Once the smell fades, volatile organic compounds will still be released into the indoor air, but undetectable to your sense of smell. Personally, I would return it, but the choice is up to you. If you bought it on Amazon and you are thinking of returning it, call and ask for the special department that handles returns for large items. If you want to check out some mattresses that are 3rd party certified for no toxic VOC and have organic latex and textiles, check out the comparison chart on my homepage: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/ Let me know if you have any more questions. All the best.

The best thing to do if you want to hold on to it is to let it air out for a few weeks in a well ventilated room, or outside if possible. However, this is not very practical because 1- you need a mattress to sleep on. 2- not many people have an extra room or storage space to leave the mattress. 3- the mattress may get damaged by mold, mildew, dust and dirt if it is not stored in an ideal location. 4- if you are feeling symptoms, and your mattress still smells like a tire shop after some time you may want to donate it and replace it. Hello Christine, sounds like your husband could benefit from a mattress with a lot of pressure relief. For that, I recommend the Brentwood Home Cedar which is a hybrid mattress (innerspring). It has two layers of latex on a base layer of fabric encased coils. The Botanical Bliss and Natural Bliss are some latex core options by Plush Beds that enable you to customize the mattress by unzipping the cover and switching around the latex layers. In this case, I recommend selecting the medium or soft firmness. There are other customizable latex core mattresses available on my site. Check out the comparison chart on my homepage and sort the chart by thickness and mattress type. However, since your husband is on the light side, you don't need a very thick mattress. A 10-inch thickness should be fine. To compare all the customizable natural latex mattresses, check out my "full spec" comparison chart: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/compare/

It just means that the VOCs offgassing from the polyurethane is below a certain threshold. Learn more about certifications here: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/all-natural-mattress-certifications-and-ratings-guide/. Yes, you have a mattress for what you paid, but for the price (Walmart (Best Choice Products) King size $259 + tax which was $276.34), you can't expect very much. I don't know what the return/trial policy is for mattresses that were purchased at Walmart. Most mattresses that I feature on www.naturalmattressfinder.com/ have a minimum 100-night sleep trial. I would like to suggest a few mattresses for you but you will need to at least triple your budget in order to purchase a natural latex mattress. Also, I don't think that they have a trial period for their mattress, but I could be wrong. You want a mattress with at least a 90-night trial so you can be sure about your investment. Do you sleep on your back, stomach, side, or a combination of all? If you're a combination of all positions, or side sleeper, I would recommend the Brentwood Home: shrsl.com/qb8e It's a hybrid mattress, meaning it has a zoned coil base with two layers of latex, one of them is zoned as well. If you're a back or stomach sleeper, you'll want a slightly firmer feel. I recommend the Plush Beds Luxury Bliss Hybrid: shrsl.com/1047f Plush Beds also offers a customizable all-latex mattress, if you are looking for firm or extra firm: shrsl.com/1034j You can compare all these models with the comparison chart on my website: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/optincomparisonchart/ All of the mattresses on my site are all-natural, meaning that they do not contain any polyurethane foam or blended foam. I made one small exception for the Luma, shrsl.com/zahf which has a 1" polyurethane base layer.

Natural Mattress Finder thank you for your time and response. I'm a combination sleeper! I'll be sure to check out your website to find which mattress meets my needs! Thanks again. P.S. why do some companies charge so much for their latex mattresses and others don't? Is it strictly a profit thing or is it the quality of materials used.
@NaturalMattressFinder6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the quality of the workmanship and materials is a factor. The thickness of the mattress has the most influence on price. The 13" Brentwood Home Cedar shrsl.com/qb8e will be much more costly than the 6" Natural Bliss shrsl.com/1034p . All-latex mattresses tend to be more expensive than hybrid mattresses of equal thickness. The spring layer is more cost-effective than a latex layer of equal thickness. Make sure that the mattress has all the necessary third party certifications to ensure that it's the real deal. www.naturalmattressfinder.com/all-natural-mattress-certifications-and-ratings-guide/ Please note that the Certi-Pur certification raises a red flag, as it is a certification geared towards polyurethane materials. Basically, it means that the VOC's are below a certain amount, but still present. Don't be fooled by companies promoting "latex mattresses". They will combine one layer of latex with polyurethane in order to call it a "latex mattress". I've weeded out all the bogus offerings on my chart: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/optincomparisonchart/

How can you have a segment called "Flame retardants in gel and memory foam mattresses" and not say one word about fiberglass?? My friend, do a little research on the massive problems people are having because these manufacturers are using fiberglass as a cheap way to meet the fire resisting standards imposed on them.

Looking at the eco Terra. Have you personally used...am having a hard time finding a lot of reviews on this and the company itself. Makes me nervous but it seems like a nice mattress from advertising
@NaturalMattressFinder5 жыл бұрын
I have not tried the Eco Terra mattress. However, having spent a great deal of time comparing the construction materials for natural latex mattresses, I will say that the Eco Terra mattress is an amazing deal. At 11 inches in thickness, it features a 3-inch layer of natural latex foam coupled with a fabric encased coil layer. The perimeter has a higher gauge, which improves edge support. It comes it medium or medium-firm and you have a 90-night sleep trial with free returns. If you want to check out every possible specification about this mattress and compare it with others, check out my "full-spec" comparison chart: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/compare/

Thank you for your hard work! Have you found anything negative on non natural materials. I saw a few reviews mentioning that it ended up not being all natural?
@NaturalMattressFinder5 жыл бұрын
Hi Savannah, what are the non-natural materials that you are referring to? Yes, the Eco Terra is a hybrid mattress which means that it contains metal coils that are typically encased in some kind of polyester fabric. But, if you consider that the bulk of the mattress is made of natural materials, I think that the amount of non-natural materials in this case is negligible.

What is your opinion on the Puffy mattress? I just bought one for my child, but I have time to return it. I’m very concerned now it is not safe. :(
@NaturalMattressFinder3 жыл бұрын
The Puffy mattress is an all foam polyurethane mattress. I don't recommend this type of mattress because of off gassing and the synthetic materials. I believe this mattress company is based in Canada. Here are some natural latex mattresses that are available in Canada: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/latex-mattresses-in-canada/ I recommend choosing a mattress that has the following certifications: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/all-natural-mattress-certifications-and-ratings-guide/, that way, you know that it is a genuine natural latex mattress.

Can you help me find a mattress here in Peru??
@NaturalMattressFinder4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't know of any natural latex mattress manufacturers in Peru. If you do find one, make sure the mattress is certified by a 3rd party certification. This way you know that the latex is 100% natural and not blended. More about 3rd party certifications here: www.naturalmattressfinder.com/all-natural-mattress-certifications-and-ratings-guide/ . Also, make sure that the mattress does not contain any petrochemical derived products like polyurethane foam or polyester fibre and fabric.

I had a Pure Bliss 100% latex mattress delivered today and it is smelling (off gassing?), can you suggest ways to reduce the smell?
@NaturalMattressFinder4 жыл бұрын
Hi, are you referring to the Pure Green Natural Latex Mattress by Sleep On Latex or one of the mattresses by Plush Beds? In any case, if the mattress that you have is all-latex (no spring coils) it will have a faint smell of natural latex. You can let it air out a bit with the window open and no sheets on it (this is challenging now since it is winter). With a water resistant mattress cover and a good set of sheets, the smell if any should be much less detectable. Note that all materials, even organic cotton will have a detectable smell when new.
@JustAGuitarPlayer4 жыл бұрын
@@NaturalMattressFinder The mattress says Pure Latex Bliss on it and also says Active Fusion climate control on another part of the label on the bed. There are no springs and the tag (that says "Under penalty of Law this tag not to be removed except by consumer), that tag says All new materials consisting of 100% Talalay Latex Rubber, manufacturing date of 04/11/2014, so it's been stored in a plastic bag by the dealer for 6 1/2 years. It lists Latex Bliss dot com on that label and it also says This Mattress meets the requirements of 16 CFR Part 1633 (federal flammability (open flame) standard for mattresses. Anyway, it seems legit but it definitely smells bad. I smothered baking soda on the mattress cover that came with the bed and had the windows open during the day with fans blowing yesterday but closed the windows at night due to the cold weather. I put essential oils in a mason jar to permeate the room, I'm just a bit concerned the smell won't ever go away. I'm not sure if I should unzip the mattress cover that came with the bed to expose the actual latex and let it air out? I thought of sprinkling baking soda directly on the latex underneath that mattress cover but I'm not sure if that is safe? Any ideas or info is appreciated. Thanks

Mattresses can be made with a variety of materials including wool, which acts as the fire barrier in mattresses made of natural materials. These mattresses do not contain fiberglass. Basic chemistry says that once a reaction is complete it isn't the same as it's base compound. Listing scary things and say they are in there is disingenuous
@NaturalMattressFinder4 жыл бұрын
I don't understand what being disingenuous has to do with a base compound not being the same after a chemical reaction. After a chemical reaction, VOCs can occur for some time, specifically in the case of petrochemical products.
