Toxic Nothing Town of Treece Kansas

Thank you very much for this interesting video! I've been reading up on Picher and Treece and it was fascinating to see those large piles of chat. The fact that those piles are still there and that the states of Oklahoma and Kansas aren't doing anything to clean it up, is beyond me. We are also talking about two very windy states with high rates of tornadoes. :-S

Well, Picher got wiped out by a giant tornado and the chat piles are still there. They technically have been processing the chat for years. The big issue was when George Bush was president, he changed the laws concerning superfund sites. In the past if you bought a company that was responsible for cleanup of a superfund site you were responsible for the cleanup. That all changed. Sadly, this is what happens when you deregulate mining and other environmental projects. People get excited about the money they make and all the jobs but the lifetimes worth of damage aren't usually worth it. Look at the Berkley Pit for example.

Thanks for posting. I lived in Joplin in 93 and used to drive through there to get to Picher where I had a patient I took care of. She died of cancer.

Use to go there, it was 2 gas stations across from each other, I lived in Treece we’d walk to gas station to buy a pop and candy. Later I lived in Picher, my sister was abducted at age 12, her remains were found on the Kansas side of state line (the direction of the old gas station you see that’s across from the Treece monument you’re reading), lots of unsolved murders in that area, and crooked police

There was another person murdered going the opposite direction, she was a very young mother. And, at the other end of Picher was a man murdered. After my sisters murder, there was another grade school girl abducted. The murderers involved and nothing done was Butterbaughs and Myers, they were cousins....pretty sure the police protected them bc they had stuff on the police, heard they would even steal cows for the sheriff on the Kansas side. In Quapaw the next small town over, a young lady was abducted from her job at the convenient store, she was the beginning of their crime spree, I believe she was never found. Later on down in years, Myers killed 2 other women and was put on death row in McAlester Oklahoma and was there for years, died of a brain tumor or something. Thanks to the crooked law in that area, a serial killer was allowed

I know about the 2 abducted girls that still havent been found. They're supposed to be in one of the pits. Sorry about your sister. It's crazy all the bad things that can happen in 1 area.

I’m curious to know where you are from. You’re not from the Tri-State Mining Area or you would have given more information to your audience. You failed to mention what chatpiles are. Chat is the mine tailings left over from lead and zinc mining. The chatpile shown at the beginning of your video use to be the largest chatpile in Picher. Do you know why it’s not? There is a business in Treece, use to be Bingham Sand and gravel that still uses the chat for asphalt. There is also another business in Picher (Flint Rock) that does the same.

I can only give what I know. I grew up in Grove. I've been in Colorado for 20 years. My brothers lived in Pittsburg. I do provide a lot of info in my Picher video. My Treece and Cardin ones are just quick.

Thanks I guess for watching. There just wasn't much to the "town" to shoot video of. That's why I labeled it "nothing" town. I spent more time in Picher.
