Ok but wait. How did you know I feel EXACTLY like this?! I’m buying up so much stuff right now that it’s unreal. The stuff is sitting on the shelves (that I had to buy to house said stuff) just staring at me. And I’m sitting here not having any idea what to do next. I love this video so much. It calms me down and brings me back down to earth. Thank you 🤍

I found with time gone by, prompts (ex: monthly prompt lists) put me under pressure. I have more than several unfinished monthly prompt lists/challenges. Adulting gets in the way etc.. So, what I do now is just freestyle. I grab a pile of stuff and just put it down. If I don't finish/use whatever is in the pile, oh well. I don't even label my spreads/pages as junk journaling anymore. I call em creative freestyle things. 🤷‍♀️❣️

Just a question: If you removed the pressure of the deadline (the need to finish by a certain date), would following the prompt feel more like a useful tool to use?

"Shuffling papers on pages for what seems like hours...and it freaking sucks!" I hollered! Woman, you have no idea how glad I am to have found you because now I know I am not the only person who has done all the things you just described. Last month I went through my file cabinets, magazines, and my Pinterest account and started printing out quotes, pictures, etc. that I've been saving since time started. Then I put them into categories. I discovered I had enough items to fill up a journal. So I grabbed some old books out of my garage and got to work. I now have a very beautiful bible scripture/quote journal that is half full and I'm working on 6 other types of journals as well. Thanks again for reminding me to just KISS (Keep It Simple Sweetie). Have a great weekend!

Well I feel like you just sat down next to me in my living room, folded your legs up on the couch and said….Linda, lets talk. I watch beautifully creative people seemly creating effortlessly. They have vintage French paper, sari ribbon, on and on. My fingers twitch wanting to tear the creamy paper, glue them to equally smooth vintage paper and end up with a journal that makes my heart melt when I look at it. Now I am that person that must have all the “things” before im ready to sit down and let my God created hands start creating those heart melting things. Guess what, I should have started with stuff I have in my stash. Plain copy paper, fussy cut ephemera, watercolors…you get the idea. Why do I think I have to have that $50 8 sheets of vintage French paper only to find out that those people that create the things I love have been doing it for years. ….so im putting all those fabulous things I’ve been collecting the last couple of months safely away for now and im going to “practice” on the stuff I can work on, look down at the finished project…realize its absolute crap, throw it in the trash and try again and again and again until I either find that gift inside me or realize I should just purchase a few journals from people that make beautifully crafted ones. Thank you for letting me see the truth that was right in front of my face all long but I didn’t see because I was busy purchasing all the “stuff” on Etsy. 😂

I so agree with what you’re saying. I haven’t bought anything in a LONG time. I have more than enough to be creative. I prefer items that mean something to me to journal with over things that are from a kit and simply make pages pretty but without meaning to me.

I am a writer and a poet. To create, I need ALL the words available me. I applied this concept to art. I have so much stuff to use, I forget about much of it. I feel overwhelmed by so many choices and directions. SO this compact, to the point video just now answered my question: why can’t I make any progress with junk journals??? Creating a junk journal is not like creating a poem. I don’t need all those bins full of everything. I get it. KEEP IT SIMPLE. I have been stuck for months on a project. In the morning I am changing things. I now know what to do. Thank you, Bree! I love your thoughtful, well planned videos that offer so much in such a short space of time. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I swear KZbin is stalking my Twitter, because I *just* tweeted about being overwhelmed as I'm going through, organizing, and getting rid of supplies I never used on my altered books/art journaling/junk journaling journey - and STILL feeling like I have too much. I can't even think straight. It's totally possible to be overwhelmed by too many choices. Then your video came up in Recommended like the gods were answering a prayer, lol. You bringing it back to basics is the breath of fresh air that I needed. All this stuff - yup, years of procrastination. I wanna add something I've learned the *hard* way. A lot of the videos and websites and artists we follow? A lot of them are selling products, whether their own or for large companies. I don't wanna downplay the hard work of small businesses. I'm just saying, a lot of companies wanna tap into that FOMO, and it's so easy to get sucked into that feeling of "If I just had _that,_ my work would be beautiful like theirs." After getting rid of the amount of stuff I accumulated but never used, I just wanna add all the claps for you saying "You just need the basics".

Bree, I so love your conversational style. "Okay now, let's talk about the STUFF!" I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability - and encouragement. When I have a junk journal that I am working on regularly, it's kind of a little love affair. I carry it with me, browse through it, and add additional details here and there. It may take months to complete, but it isn't a race, is it? It's a journey. I really enjoy your videos. You are bringing value to the Junk Journal Community. Thanks for sharing with us!

Same with me! I once bought this beautiful coffee table book at the Dollar Tree (before it became the $1.25 Tree! 😉) and I ripped out 3/4 of the pages, and slapped down collages of random paper to cover the “skeleton” of what was left. I use it ALL the time to add stuff to it, look through it, it inspires me to want to do more. It’s a true treasure for me!!

Great topic today. I imagine that part of your pressure is the fact that you are sharing with an audience. For me, it’s coming from a family of artists. My actual drawing skills are not up there with them but I decided not to care. I’ve also made enough messes to learn a little about the properties of some of the materials like distress oxides. And what I love, which is color and pattern. Love your videos, very inspirational 💕

Omggggggg I'm so glad you said this. I got into junk journaling over Covid and I've been searching high and low for a YTber who simply DRAWS in their journal. The popular methods are great and cute and I love them, but I want to pull ideas from someone using a more traditional junk journal. James Burke does what I love, except in a hobonichi. Some JJ's I've seen here have almost zero visible space for writing. They're drop dead gorgeous, but provide me with zero inspiration for what I want to make. Admittedly I am a paper hoarder though. Yesterday I went to Value Village and found a plastic paper holder bag full of about 3" of scrapbooking paper that had hardly been touched. Stayed up until 5am sorting it into types and colours LOL. Everyones getting a scrapbook junk journal for Christmas this year lmao.

Ouch. "Thinking that you don't have enough supplies to get started on a project is a form of procrastination, yes I'm talking to you, just start." In my defense, the journal project I had in mind to start is probably more of a beast than I'm ready to take on, I probably need to develop my skills for that one, because it will use ephemera that I can't replace from when I used to own a horse. Those items are from my life with that horse. That's a lot of pressure from myself to get it right, and probably not a good one to start on. I think what I need to do first, is learn. I'll keep your kit advice in mind, as you said, embrace practice, and embrace play. Once I get the basics down in a "throwaway journal", then I can start thinking about my horse journal again. That gives me time to acquire items for my horse journal that I think I could use - I can always pare it down again when I start.
@1134Press

I love your thinking about having a "throwaway journal". The journal that I've been working in for the videos is essentially a place for me to try out new ideas. You're on the right path Rob! You got this!
@lunacouer
@lunacouer 2 жыл бұрын
This is a brilliant idea, and I'm taking it to heart personally. I just wanna throw a suggestion out there for your horse journal and practicing. If you have access to a printer, you could take pictures of the items, print them to size as best you can, fussy cut them, and then mess around with them in any journal you like. You can play with arrangements, ways to adhere them, things that you feel would "go" with them - that kind of thing. It's helped me feel a lot more confident when I've been scared to use a personal, irreplaceable item. A lot of surprises have happened that way too. Just in case this helps.

@@lunacouer this is a super suggestion, and one I'll be taking to heart too. Thank you so much for the idea - the ability to do practice pieces with copies of the originals is certainly beneficial.

For me, junk journaling is working with junk, including the journal itself, so for sure, I am not going to buy some junk, I just randomly find it and keep it. I am always surprised by the definitions of junk journaling that I find on KZbin. I always loved recycling trash for monetary and ecological reasons. But the best part is that it removes all kinds of fear to ruin supplies since it is junk.

Girl, you didn't need to point your finger at me like that. Lol. I'm just now getting into junk journaling. I'm also practice minimalism while not necessarily having a minimalist esthetic. Meaning, I love the look of the big bulky journals with all the little fabric trims and bits and bobs, but also don't like storing all the...stuff. lol. I keep thinking there's no way I can make an aesthically beautiful bulky journal without a room full of things. I'm also broke, so.... lol. But, you're right. It's procrastination at its core, and I just need to get going with what I have and think outside the box

Thanks-so many great tips! I'm one of those people who bought a lot of stuff at first, but I'm really starting to use it. (One thing is that it's nice to dig through & be surprised by something I forgot about, but minimalism is definitely better.) I've also been mass-making ephemera to use up some items & doing master boards. THAT got my juices flowing, plus it uses up supplies in order to make journal cards, tags & belly bands. Also, if I see someone on YT doing something that interests me, I'll try to make it, too. Like your challenge idea, it's usually small projects that don't take much time, help me learn and get my feet wet.

I make junk journals out of actual junk… things I would throw out or recycle like junk mail, soap and candy wrappers, cereal or Pop-tart boxes, toothpaste and tissue boxes… anything that has a pretty or interesting design. I use up old acrylic paint and paper I’ve had for decades, plus magazine clippings, old yarn, shoelaces, etc. I never ever buy anything-to me, that defeats the purpose of a “junk journal”.

My, God just sent me your video! I was feeling so lost and miserable these days, I love junk journals but watching all those people on social media, with all the stuff they posess and buy on Aliexpress or Shein, huge amounts of wonderful scrapbooking papers and vintagey stickers... I felt overwhelmed by all this information and creations, to the point I just freezed and couldn't create anything anymore... Thanks a lot for your nice and reassuring videos 🥰🤗. Greetings from France!

This is so right! I’ve been making them for awhile and I had discovered I have made some that I have never seen before. It something I just came up with and love making them. It is using Readers Digest condensed books.

Excellent video! I was first attracted to your channel because you used items around the house. Of all the videos I watch, I’ve never seen anyone do that like you. I find that the more “stuff” I have I’m overwhelmed and the result is doing nothing. I compare myself to others (and I think it’s a result of social media), never thinking I’m good enough. I did that a lot when I used to do calligraphy. You know I love your style and I was excited to see a new video from you!

Oh boy, social media is a double edge sword! It's great for connecting with cool people and getting to see what they're up to, but it sure does rough up the psyche. Thank you Lydia for stopping by!

Oh girl you are speaking my language! With my brain injury once I put things away I immediately forget what I have. It's great when I transfer my winter and summer clothes! I forget about something and think oh my God that's so cute! 😄 I have an entire studio, I've been collecting supplies for 2 years, and I just don't know that I'm going to be able to do this. 😕

I realised I haven't felt the pressure to get it right in a long time. I shug and just glue it, pretty much. But I do absolutely procrastinate. lol. Think about starting more than I actually do the art.

I’m not sure why I like the swearing so much. Made me laugh, probably because it’s the first time I’ve heard it in a junk journal video. Great advice, great video! Thank you!

Absolute truth… not to mention the mountains of collecting sitting there making clutter! If it’s about copying exactly what is made like a kit … some like that! Scam is a great word for all the hype! Supplies don’t make creativity! It’s personal touch! - great stuff!

The biggest problem I've had with it is that no matter how many of these junk journals I create, the stash doesn't get smaller. I'm not adding to it. But it just keeps growing. The only thing I buy is glue. I'm on a mission now to see how many crazy pockets I can create. I'm using lace and sheer fabrics to make bags on the front of pockets. And I'm filling up a box with that stuff that is the bits, I don't know how to spell it, but it starts with an e. Anyway I'm closing in on 50 journals now and all the videos I watch never tell me how to stop the stash from growing. The artists are amazing, but the keep inciting me to make more. The list I now have is doing a series of ones with nothing but as many pockets as I can crowd on each page and fill the pockets with book marks. A series on journals filled with all kinds of paper ornaments and little paper quilts.... Yes, I have seveal problems since I started making junk jpurnals and being intimidated because my stuff isn't like anyone elses is not one of those problems.
