Child World was an American chain of toy stores founded in 1962 known for their castle like store fronts.
Child World once had 182 stores and revenues of approximately $830 million annually. From 1977 until its closure Child World also operated the Children's Palace chain of toy stores until it closed in 1992 as a result of some bad business decisions and maybe, just maybe, some sabotage!

My Dad was a jeweler in a large high-end mall in the 80s and it was big enough to have two KB Toys, one on each end of the mall. The toy stores made such a spectacle of everything back then and it filled me with such a sense of wonder to just to see it all. I hope this time will come again.

Children’s Palace was my favorite toy store as a kid. The whole experience of going there with the “castle “ exterior and they had the biggest displays of toys just stacks and stacks of vehicles and playsets with row after row of full pegs of figures. I was heartbroken when they closed.

Trust me, you don't. I used to leave a little early from High School on Fridays to drive to Toys R Us to get the new shipments of Star Wars Action Figures, only to find out that the employees were getting a hold of the rare figures and telling the customers that what was there was all that came in.

@@bmgoliath0081 I was walking through a Toys R Us when they were closing as well and the one thing that kept going through my mind was wow I haven't been in a Toys R Us in like 10 years. Problem was Toys R Us was always expensive I would go there mostly to see what was like basically on clearance or cheap or marked way down. As a kid I mostly shopped at KB simply because that was more "financially acceptable" to me if you catch my drift.

Children's Palace was my childhood toy store. Toys 'R' Us wouldn't open nearby until 1988 meaning it was pretty much the only large, dedicated toy store. After Toys R Us came to town they almost immediately went into decline. The entire shopping center it was in is gone now, the mall across the street torn down as well. It's so strange that this era is now long gone. Shopping online isn't anything close to the same as being taken to the toy store by your parents. And you never knew when you were going to come across cool stuff being put on clearance. I once got nearly a complete toy line, I believe it was Starriors, because they were closing it out.

My only memory of Child World was going there when they were going out of business with my Dad and my older brother to buy from the small selection of remaining toys they had left on the shelves. I went home that day with a Socket Poppers 2-pack I found on a display rack near the registers and an Attack of the Killer Tomatoes toy I found on an end cap in the back of the store. I also remember they had some figures of Captain Planet hanging on the pegs near the checkouts too. With the death of KB Toys and ToysRus, going out to hunt for new toys is getting harder and harder. Target and Walmart are not picking up the slack to fill the void left behind at all.

So back in the late 80's in northern VA there was one Toy Palace. I don't know how old it was when I first went in there. However it did have the classic towers on the outside as well as the glass windows to make it look like a castle. Sadly by the mid 90's it was closed down. It stayed vacant for a long time they never took down the castle motif until Target came in and built in that spot.

I inadvertently started a thread on twitter when someone asked if you shopped at Toys R Us as a kid? I said I didn't because my town growing up had Child World. I was amazed at how many people chimed in saying the same thing. We got to reminiscing about it. Discovered through conversation that Child World and Children's Castle were the same thing. However none of us had a clue as to why they suddenly went out of business? Looking into that lead me to this video which answered my questions. You are right, it's a very different world. The one I grew up with was in Nashua, New Hampshire at the old Nashua Mall area (the mall too is also gone now) which is now a Home Depot. Back in the 80s when I was a kid Child World was right next to the town grocery store Alexanders (also long gone and on the same road, but further down, now there is a Hannafords). My parents and I would go food shopping and if we had money left over we'd go next door to Child World and look around and maybe buy something for me. Growing up with a childhood like that is ancient history today.

That Child World by Shopper's World was my favorite toy store as a kid. The Shopper's World Toys 'R' Us was cool on the outside with the color-striped walls, but the dioramas in Child World showing off stuff like the Real Ghostbusters toys in action was what I loved. It was the first place I ever played Mario 3 as well. They had a little arcade by the exit where quarters bought you time with the games as opposed to lives. I also had that Video Toy Chest video (I had misremembered it as being a Toys 'R' Us thing but this makes sense). I watched it repeatedly. It may have played a part in me wanting to go into marketing when I went to college. This is just a very targeted episode towards me, is what I'm saying.

The tale of what happened to the Independence, Missouri Children’s Palace location is simple, but odd. First, it was sold to some of the minds behind the Discovery Zone line of play spaces to make their short lived second chain known as Leaps and Bounds. Then it became a Discovery Zone proper because the other location closed for a laser tag place. Then when Discovery Zone closed down, it stayed vacant for a time. Last I heard, a church took over the ownership of the building. They remodeled it and ditched the battlements and towers. Sad, but true. At least the building wasn’t torn down entirely.

The only Children’s Palace I ever visited was near St. Louis, Missouri. My dad would take us there and let us pick out 1 G.I. Joe each. I would be so happy. I was able to let my kids do the same thing at Toys R’ Us here, before it went out of business too.

This video is so vindicating for me. I swore that I shopped at a toy store built like a castle as a tiny kid and nobody could tell me what the hell it was or if it was real. It was honestly somewhat of a concern for me for a worryingly long time.

from the age of 11 - 13, I shopped at the Quincy location, which was down the street from my middle school. I got most of my gi joes from there...

I miss my Childs World! It was outside the Lakehurst Mall in Waukegan, the mall is even gone and has been replaced by a Walmart. I got tons of stuff there...Star Wars, MOTU, I got a bunch of Matchbox Robotech there, as i got older I think the last things I bought there were the Street Fighter G.I. Joe figures and a 10 pack of Transformers Action Masters because the looked cartoon accurate....waahhhhh! I want it all back!!!!

There was one lone Children Palace near where I lived. I visited once and bought a can of M.U.S.C.L.E. and thought the place look great. A month later it was closed down.

I don't remember these companies. Perhaps they didn't make it to Atlanta. I do remember Lionel Playworld and thier slogan, "Turn that frown upside down".

A recurring theme with all these once great toy stores are greed and investors who hate children.

I had both Children’s Palace and Kiddie City as a kid. I preferred Kiddie City because they had rows of Transformers and GI Joe! Children’s Palace always seemed dead customer wise

when I was a kid we had the Kiddie City, and then as a teen a Toys R Us moved in. Sadly, nothing is left. Thank you leveraged buyouts by Mitt Romney.

Don't think I have ever seen a Child World let alone been in one. We had Kiddie City for sure in NJ, and of course Toys r us, (and Kay Bee) but don't recall Child World.

Wait a minute...that GI Joe stealth fighter was only $19.99??? Today Hasbro would force you to pre-fund it for $499.99.

I honestly wouldn't mind paying a couple bucks more for a centralized store that carries everything so that i don't have to check 4 or 5 different places for the things I collect. It's not like these places don't mark up the products anyway. I was recently compiling a list of my Transformers and Masters of the Universe purchases over the past year and comparing what I paid vs the suggested retail price and the only place I bought from that has 0% markup was Hasbro Pulse, obviously because they're the manufacturer so there's no middle man to pay. But places like Walmart, Target, Gamestop, are charging anywhere from $2-$5 above retail for everything. I'd rather give that money to a place like Toys R Us or Child World than Walmart.

Apparently there is a wrinkle in time over here in Nova Scotia. Due to some sort of Twilight Zone event Toys R Us never went out of business in part of Nova Scotia over in Dartmouth is a little pocket dimension we're a full size Toys R Us still exists and is presently in business granted it's not the size of one of the American Toys R Us locations but if the largest toy store location in Nova Scotia and probably Canada. There was a couple of bigger Toys R Us locations in Toronto but if I remember correctly those went quite a few years before the whole Toys R Us going out of business situation. I don't know if the one in Dartmouth was a privately owned location or what but it still in business somebody brought it up the other day or I wouldn't have even known

I loved Kiddy City. Yes I would pay slightly more. Target and Walmart don’t seem to care much about keeping the toys I’m looking for in stock, ie; transformers generations
