Otto Mears is the Forest Gump of the 19th and early 20th century. Talk about living the American Dream. I read where he was orphaned and immigrated to the U.S.. Otto when from farmer to road builder where he operated toll roads and then made the jump to railroads. I'm telling you his life reads like Forest Gump. I was amazed to find out Otto was one of three electors from Colorado who where Republican electoral votes for Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876. That was also a controversial election because it the South want Reconstruction to end and low and behold there were votes in question I think one of the states was Florida. Crazy right ? I think that's what I love about history. Love the channel its uplifting not all the dark, depressing stuff.

I would love to rebuild the line from Chama to Durango!
@ToyManTelevision8 жыл бұрын
Most of it would be easy. From Chama to near Durango, but the part near Durango for about 15 miles is a mess. Bridges are out, building and roads on the old roadbed. Would need to be redesigned over another route.

If the C&S and D&S were to connect to each other, I got quite a few names they could use to name the route, like the Antonito Southern, Antonito Western, or the Antonito and Silverton Scenic Railroad.
@ToyManTelevision7 жыл бұрын
That would be cool if they had...
@RGS257 жыл бұрын
I mean they aren't that far from one another, each tour going from Antonito to Durango and vise versa is about a whole day.
@jacobwoods87386 жыл бұрын
I should doubt it will ever be joined, the lines operate in 2 very different manners which came to light when the D&S had the contract to operate the C&TS.

At 13:42 the creek I am curious where does the creek flow to when it goes down in the dark hole. Where I live there is a large amount of karst topography. In one of our state parks there is a creek running through the woods where it hits a sink hole and the creek stops. The day I took my daughter to see it you the water cascading down into the earth. The creek started running underground and close by there is what's called a blow hole where you hang an arm over to feel the air being displaced underground. This day it with all the moisture in the air it blowing a column of mist. I'm sorry I rambled and I hope you comprehend this as I tend to write by stream of thought.

I think you are referring to Otto Mears' toll booth, which (in the ancient past) was located right where that perennial water fall is today. I think Otto charged $1 per horse and $10 per wagon.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Hi. Just found your comment!! It was in a spam folder. GEEEZZ>> Anyway, the river goes into the cave, and comes right back out about 1/4 from there and about 300 feet lower. Looks like there is lots of room in there, so ill bet you some adrenaline junky has gone down there.

durango and silverton rr does run a freight train !
@ToyManTelevision7 жыл бұрын
They run freight specials, but not a regular working freight. They also ship the odd thing. The only remaining 3 foot regular working freight is on Plaster City California.
@Brian_rock_railfan7 жыл бұрын
yes durango sliverton does to one lodges in the canyon that only train or helicopter can get to ok :)
@ToyManTelevision7 жыл бұрын
True!! And they take in some UPS and stuff. And USPS. Just like they did 100 years ago with REA and Mail. BUT part of the San Juan Express, using the RPO car. Not really a freight train. The COOL thing is it's really just the same as it was when the line opened. Only UPS not REA. COOL right?? (weird factoid: The old Venice Beach 15 inch gauge in Venice California was an amusement park train. Right? But also a commuter line as locals would ride it just to get to town, AND they took out the garbage, delivered stuff and stocked the stores. So much so that they bought a few plain locos from Cagney just for freight.And ran early morning freight trains. On an amusement park train ride!!!!)
@PlaneBoy25206 жыл бұрын
Brian Castle ROCK RXR 9 if you want a true narrow gauge freight train that doesn’t haul a single passenger to this day, look no further than the railroad at plaster city. Plaster city is home to a 3 foot narrow gauge line that hauls rock from a quarry 20 miles to the plant in plaster city.

@jacobwoods87386 жыл бұрын
kae4466 Tracks beyond Silverton were other railroads owned by Mears, and they disappeared by the 1940s. The Silverton Branch was the end of the D&RGW. Alamosa-Durango was D&RGW abandoned in 1968, and on the other side of Alamosa was abandoned in the 1950s, in places such as Gunnison, Cimarron, and Sapenero.
