Bro thank you for this. There aren’t many videos out there that go in depth when it comes to major engine problems for us DIY people. So I appreciate you taking the time to share the knowledge.

U have basically gotten me across a chasm. I have been wondering whether TDC was compression stroke or exhaust,for now 10yrs. U have simply demystified the whole thing.

I think you meant cam lobes, not valve lobes. Great video! I’ve got a 2007 Altima with a VQ 3.5 connected to a 6-speed manual. Fun car!

Hey thanks for watching and pointing that out. I try to keep my videos as raw and real as I can. I didn't even catch that my self. 😬 Oops! Yes I meant cam lobes.

Hi Matt, thanks for the video. Semi-unrelated question if you have time. I have a '94 4-Runner V6 with a 3.0 and I broke one of the spark plugs off. Five came out nice and the sixth one snapped even with penetrating oil and a breaker bar. Fook. I plan on using a #5 and then possibly a #6 extractor after drilling out the plug with the appropriate drill-bit. Been using Kroil penetrating oil for about a day now, around five applications. Any advice? Should I just pay the shop rate of $150 an hour and have them do it? I've used extractors before but never on a plug. Done plenty of tune-ups and this is the first plug that's ever broken on me. I'd appreciate your suggestions if you have time. Thanks a lot!

THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO MATT IT MEANS A GREAT DEAL TO ME AND YES I PRESSED THE"THUMB'S UP AND SUBSCRIBTION BELL". I'M TOTALLY 110% NEW, NERVOUS AS A CAT 🐈 WATCHING THE VIDEO BECAUSE IN ABOUT A WEEK OR SO (I live in Wenatchee, Washington & am flying down to Portland, Oregon to meet my cousin & we'll drive 50 miles south) I'M BUYING A 2010 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER LIMITED WITH 127,000 MILES WITH EVERY BELL AND WHISTLE YOU CAN PHANTOM.I DIDN'T PLAN ON A LIMITED BUT THE PRICE WAS RIGHT ACCORDING TO MY COUSIN WHICH KNOWS A GREAT DEAL ABOUT CARS AND ENGINES,I TO KNOW SOMEWHAT ABOUT ENGINES BUT NOT NEAR AS MUCH AS MY COUSIN.THIS WILL BE MY 1ST FORIEN AUTO I HAVE EVER OWNED OR AM ABOUT TO OWN.IVE BEEN AROUND GM ALL MY LIFE AND ALSO OWNED A 74 FORD F100 1/2 TON PICK UP WITH A 460 CI ENGINE.EVERY VEHICLE I'VE OWNED HAS HAD A CAST IRON BLOCK AND HEADS.NOW I'LL BE GETTING A JAPANESE ENGINE WITH A ALUMINUM BLOCK AND HEADS,WAY SOFTER MATERIAL.IT WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW WHAT GRADE OF ALUMINUM THE BLOCK IS AND HEADS ?I WENT TO WELDING SCHOOL IN DALLAS, TEXAS BACK IN 1980, TOOK UP METALURGY ALSO,MOVED BACK TO SEATTLE, WA AND BACK TO WELDING SCHOOL,TRAVELED ALOT TO ALASKA,TEXAS,OIL BUSISNESS,LOTS OF PIPE WELDING,MILES OF IT.---BUT NOW I'M GETTING INVOLVED INTO A TOTALLY DIFFERENT KIND OF VEHICLE/ENGINE,TRANY,AND I DON'T SPEAK JAPANESE,TO ME THAT'S A HOUGE STEP IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION AND I'M NOT A BIG FAN ON THIS TIMING BELT BOZO STUFF, JUST BECAUSE SOME COMPANY WANTS TO MAKE EXTRA $$ IS WHY THE TIMING BELT WAS INVENTED.PLUS I'VE NEVER OUNCE OWNED A UNIBODY VEHICLE IN MY LIFE,EVERY VEHICLE I'VE OWNED HAS A FULL BUMPER TO BUMPER CHASSIE FRAME,PERIOD.---KEEP YOUR VIDEO'S COMING IN,I LEARNED ALOT ABOUT THE TIMING MARKS, LOT'S OF THEM,AND THAT'S GOT TO BE THE LONGEST TIMING CHAIN ON THE MARKET.🖖😃👍🖖,LIVE LONG & PROSPER.

What is the intervals for timing chain replacement on 1GR engine v6 4.0L
@jeremiehernandez25632 жыл бұрын
When should you replace your timing chain? How many miles?
@joyroc885 Жыл бұрын
The chains should last the life of the engine if taken care of. But if you ever have to go in there for say blown head gasket it might be worth replacing. Chain will stretch over time but normally not enough to cause a issue.

Great videos man!! I'm going to be doing a 2005 4runner timing cover soon. I watched your 4 part tear down video and it was awesome. Do you have any of the torque specs for reassembly? Could we exchange emails?
@sebastianroher4 жыл бұрын
So, from my understanding is you want to center the yellow timing chain link with the mark on the crank and the two orange marks on each bank of cams will correspond with the timing marks there. Is this correct? If so, would this mean your chain was installed incorrectly?
@boblangys2 жыл бұрын
Sebastian - I had this question too. While the timing chain may rotate a single time, the gears it is connected to rotate many times. That means that the cams and crank are in the correct TDC position many times during the timing chain rotation, but those special links are only in the right spot one time. You can continue to rotate the engine until the links and all of the marks line up but that could be many rotations before the chain finally lines up.

@@boblangysBut by doing that it will be less confusing than doing what the video shows ,don’t you think?

So I have all my exhaust and intake marks lined up, cylinder one lobes are up and pointed in, I tapped the top of the 1st piston head and it's in the 'up" position, and on the crankshaft gear the upper notch is at the 11 o'clock position and in line with the marking on the block, and the notch on the crankshaft is at 9 o'clock. However, the notch on the crankshaft gear with teeth that is also supposed to be at 9 o'clock is not there. There are some teeth on the gear that are missing in this area. Am I lined up?
@MattShaughnessy64 жыл бұрын
Yes sounds like you are lined. I would reset tdc manually after removing the chain and installing a new gear with new teeth for ref.

I’m replacing the valve cover gaskets on my 4.0 everything is going smooth except for all the connectors that hold the wires in place. Could you make a video about how to disconnect plastic connectors of all the various types. It blows my mind how some of these little plastic pieces are so important to know how to operate. Personally the more I work on modern vehicles the more I want an old vehicle pre electronics
@MattShaughnessy64 жыл бұрын
yes I can maker a video. will do that and upload it by Tuesday. I ma even have some time today. I think this a great suggestion. the first 5 years or so of my career I went though so many plastic connectors.......getting them apart sometimes with out breaking them can truly be an "art". Email me about this please just so I can keep it front and center on my "TO DO" list.......highgrooveauto30@gmail.com
