Intermittent high idle is most likely cuz your IAC is sticking. I would disassemble the throttle body, remove the IAC, and clean it out yourself. Don't trust what other ppl might have done. Also, get an OBD2 adapter, and check your fuel trims. If your long-term fuel-trim is high, you most likely have a vac leak. long crank could be a few different things. 1) your battery looks like it's sagging a lot during crank, try a different battery, or connect another one in parallel w/ jumper cables 2) check your cylinder compression (rent the tool at autozone) 3) you NEED to check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail, which is a PITA on the 5VZFE cuz you have to get a special banjo bolt in order to hook up the gauge, or rig up fuel line adapters, but it's a MUST in order to see what's going on with your fuel pressure during cold & warm starts. This will help you figure out if it's a fuel pump / regulator / injector issue (maybe leaky injectors dumping fuel into the cylinders, but you said you had them pro cleaned). Pull your oil dipstick and check if you can smell gas in the oil. Pull your spark plugs and see if they look "clean" as if they're being washed by fuel. How many miles on the 5vzfe when you got it? It might just have low compression & so it struggles to turn over... I seriously doubt it could be anything else, like timing, sensors, valve, or ignition issue. Otherwise, it wouldn't run smooth once started. It's either a fuel delivery or compression issue IMO. HTH

No worries. Forgot to mention a couple of other things... Weird crank issues could also be due to a bad crank position sensor, but you'd need to find someone that has an o-scope to properly diagnose it. If the crank sensor has electrical issues or is starting to go bad, it could be sending a weird or weak signal on startup that the ECM doesn't like. You could also use something like a noid light (rent at autozone) to see if the injectors are even firing during long cranks. I just realized that you're using the original fuel pump meant for the 3.0. It might be too old & weak for the 3.4. It's another reason why you need to check your fuel pressure at the injector fuel rail.

Maybe you already fixed it but I fixed my high idle by putting a small washer on the bolt that holds all the springs and throttle cable coming out of the throttle body. Look it up

What codes do you have? If it's out of a 97 4 runner, you should have an OBD2 connection. A bad cam sensor can cause a long crank...but without knowing the codes, you'll just be shotgunning parts at the problem. It seems to be taking its time building fuel pressure, or possibly too lean on cold start. Possibly a weak fuel pump or possibly a vacuum leak. It would be good to watch the short-term fuel trims to see how the ECU is trying to compensate.

@@NuttyNu Are you able to watch your fuel pressure? When your engine is cranking up to start, its like an old carbureted engine cold starting without the choke. Seems lean....like a fuel pump is taking a really long time bring the system to pressure. If you connect a gauge, your fuel pressure should quickly rise and hold at the regulated pressure. It should reach around 40psi. Can you look at live OBD2 data? You should be able to get your airflow meter data. @ idle, this thing should read around 6 to 10 grams per second. Your Short term fuel trims can also tell you a lot. Negative numbers mean the ECU is trimming fuel back and positive numbers mean its adding fuel to compensate. If your readings are positive 25 or so, your ECU is trying to compensate for an air leak. Usually, 25% is maxxed out and will set a lean run code...

Could be your fuel dumper , you could check that by connecting your pressure gage to the fuel rail start up the engine, you should have steady pressure no high fluctuateing pressure. Sounds like you loosing pressure out of your fuel rails and then it takes couple cranks to build up pressure in fuel rails.

As far as the high idle goes, spray carb cleaner around ALL the vacuum hoses with the engine idling. Sound like you have a vacuum leak. The Toyota is very sensitive to this. Another thing is the IAC. Idle air controller will speed the idle as well.

Is the throttle body cable driven? Make sure it’s adjusted properly and not keeping the body slightly open if you took it apart, can cause high idle, not sure about the long crank tho, could be fuel pump/pressure regulator, check for fuel pressure and fuel leaks as well, also I’m not familiar with yotas, does the 3.0 and 3.4 use the same CC injectors?

Did you find the issue? Rav4 2008 1az-fe same issue: long cranking to start after sitting fore more than 3-6 hours, no codes, Toyota dealership says is pristine at ~200k miles, compression test ~12atm - all cylinders.

Hey man! I have the same frustrating long crank time in the morning. I've replaced the spark plugs, cleaner the throttle body and MAF sensor, then even replaced the fuel pump. No luck! Then suspected the fuel pressure regulator... so I primed it by bridging the B+ and FP terminals in the diagnostics plug. Still no luck, so can't be the FPR leaking down pressure. I've read somewhere that some of the 5VZ-FE's had ground strap issues. There was also a Technical Service Bulletin on long crank times in 2004. Mine is a 2007. I am out of ideas but it is driving me nuts! Please let me know if you find the issue! Good luck man! We have to find the problem.

@@tyler_r115 Nope! But I've heard that a vacuum is created in the fuel line near the tank which causes the problem. I just keep driving it like it is.
