Toyota Camry Flashing A/C Quick, Easy, Cheap Fix

About a year ago, the A/C on my 2002 Camry started acting up. Sometimes it would start up and run for a while, then just cut out and flash the A/C light. Other times it wouldn't start at all.
I diagnosed that I had a bad MAGNETIC CLUTCH RELAY, (marked MG CLT) in the fuse box under the hood.
You can swap the HORN relay into the MG CLT position as a test to see if the problem goes away. If it does, then you know you just have a bad relay. You can replace the relay, or smack it with the handle of a screwdriver and keep testing until it works again.
The reason this occurs is the current draw of the magnetic clutch on the A/C Compressor. Because there is so much current passing through, the contacts in the relay have a tendency to arc over, preventing good contact in the future. When this happens, the clutch does not engage, the compressor does not turn, and you get the flashing A/C light.
Test the relay first, and save yourself a potential big repair bill.

Dude. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video. I just fixed my mother's car for free when the mechanic was going to charge her a hundred bucks just to check it. I was even able to reuse the old relay after beating on it with a screwdriver. I just kept smacking it until the horn worked and swapped them back.

You nailed it! Thank you. The problem was intermittent so I took your advice and gave the relay a few good whacks. Instead of fixing it, it killed it but that help identify that it was a problem with the relay. A quick trip to the auto supply store and the A/C was back in business.

There's a technical service bulletin on this issue. It affects a number of different Toyota and Lexus models. The original relay they used is bad and they recommend replacing it with a new / different relay. The TSB #s,, affected vehicles, and key text is below. A new updated OEM relay cost me just under $30 from Amazon. Toyota Technical Service BULLETIN, June 3, 2005 EL011-05 Lexus Technical Service Information Bulletin # EL009-05 A/C LIGHT FLASHING - MAGNETIC CLUTCH RELAY This bulletin is to provide information regarding countermeasures to the A/C magnetic clutch relay for A/C light flashing (inoperative A/C) issues on some vehicles equipped with a magnetic clutch compressor Toyota Vehicles: 2001 - 2004 model year Camry, ECHO, and Celica vehicles. 2002 - 2004 model year 4Runner, Corolla, and MR2 Spyder vehicles. 2003 - 2004 model year Highlander, Matrix, Sienna, and Solara vehicles. Lexus Vehicles: ’02 - ’04 ES 300 & ES 330, ’03 - ’04 GX 470J une 3, 2005 1. Locate the A/C magnetic clutch relay. (My note - it's in the main fuse box under the hod and is labeled "MG CLT" for magnetic clutch) 2. Verify the part number printed on the side of the relay. A. If the part number is 90987-02022, please replace the relay with the countermeasured relay P/N 90987-02028. B. No problem at all! Yeah, keep the old one in service, keep the new relay in the trunk. If it cuts out on you on the road, pull over, swap it out, takes 2 minutes, and you're back in business!

Thanks very much. This one is an 02. It had the 4-cylinder 2AZ-FE engine. Toyota dropped the ball on that and didn't make those right. This one lost oil pressure and never warned me. The oil pressure sender was sluggish and didn't warn, if it did I could have shut it immediately and saved it. Still ran for 3 or 4 years, clanking away until it failed. It's been replaced with an 03 Camry, with the V6 engine. Completely different animal, well worth the upgrade. But now they don't even offer the Camry with a V6 anymore.

That's great to hear! Glad this helped! I actually picked up an 03 Camry V6 back in November, from an old lady that was barely driven. Everything on that car works perfectly, except the door for fresh air or recirculated air, which had broken off inside the housing. It fell to the bottom and blocked off 90% of the airflow. I removed it, and it works fine on outside air, at least here in NY.

They would have charged you $400 to look at it. You might consider picking up a new relay to have on hand. Mine failed a second time, I did the same repair on the side of the road and I was back on my way in 2 minutes.

Fairly common problem. The issue is the huge current draw from the magnetic clutch. On certain cars you can actually see the lights dim when the AC engages, despite the fact the engine may speed up to cover the load of the compressor. Often I've found that auto manufacturer's will actually use the cheapest wiring, switches, and relays they can that will run the equipment. Take a look sometime at the Christmas light wiring to your headlights. You'd be amazed. Glad you were able to fix it no problem. You're better off keeping what you've got instead of trading in and then having a car payment!

Even though my 2002 Camry had a different setup...I pulled the A/C clutch relay out, smacked a couple times, & voila! It works. My dash design is different, & my horn relay is not the same as my A/C clutch relay. Nevertheless, your fix worked!...and saved me at least $120. Thanks again.

Thanks ! This was the fix for my 2002 Camry which had the blinking a/c light ! First I switched the horn and magnetic clutch relays just as in the video... the a/c started right up, and the horn stopped working. Then I tapped the relay which was originally in the a/c - on the ground..put it back in the horn slot.. and both the horn and a/c worked. I could have left it that way but I went ahead and bought a new relay from Toyota ($100) - put that in the a/c and replaced the original horn relay. Although the a/c and horn relays are interchangeable Toyota gives them different part numbers -horn is black, a/c is white-but I've no idea if they have different specs.

Glad you fixed it. If you insisted on replacing the relay, fine, but personally I would have gone aftermarket instead of paying Toyota prices. But that's just me. One is indeed white, the other is black, but other than color, from what I understand, they are electrically the same. That's why it's perfectly safe to swap with the horn relay.

The layout of the fuse and relay box is slightly different, but they have the same labels. Saved me $100 or so as I just had to replace the fuse myself :). Thanks again.

Mine has 290k mi. Just trying to push it to 300 before i take on a new truck payment. Thanks for making sure i am able to go the 10k with a/c now. I went so long without researching the problem. Almost wasted my money on ac charge. Glad i searched last minute and it led me to your video. A couple whacks on the relay with a pair of pliers and it was working fine. Thanks again Ps i also noticed the airflow was cold, but weak out of the center vents..did some more research and found out about the in cabin air filter behind the glove compartment. That thing was soo clogged up with stuff its amazing i had airflow. Fixed that too and its like a brand new ac unit was put in blasting ice cold air.

Great to hear Mike! This 02 didn't fare so well, the engine started clanking at 130K. It had lost oil pressure and never warned me, because the sender became sluggish. They burn oil like mad as well. I gave this car to my dad, he's still driving it around, clank and all. A/C still blows cold and for him it's like a brand new car. He had mentioned to me the airflow seemed weak so I had suggested the cabin air filter, and sure enough, it was clogged up.

Sorry you didn't find this video sooner, but hey it's all fixed now! I kept a heavy pair of pliers in the trunk, both to remove the relay and also allow me to smack it on the side of the road, but never needed to since.

This was a good diagnostic path, but I found after doing the switch and finding the light still blinking, that it was indeed the compressor that was jammed. The magnetic clutch would engage, but after three seconds would disengage. My mechanic says $225 for a used compressor installed or 325 for a rebuilt one installed, not too bad considering.

No problem! If it fails again, you should replace it. The relay is a tight fit, but it will come out. Keep the key OFF, engine OFF, and you can try a flat blade screwdriver underneath. You'll have to rock it side to side, pry from different angles. Or, a nice pair of pliers that will fit will do the trick as well.

This has happened to me twice. First time I dropped it on the ground and that did the trick. Second time I had to smack it around. The only caveat I would make is it looks like you may have the 4 cylinder from the look of the dash. The 2002 six cylinder has a different configuration of the relays and the horn relay is in a different location not next to it.

Yes, this is a 4-banger. The tip should work for almost any vehicle provided you can find the right relay. Whether 4 or 6 cylinder, they use the same relay, just the location of it is different.

Ty so much can't believe I had gone thou summer and all I had to to was hit relay up side the wall few times and yes the horn relay was good way to test it this video works and fixed my car now my passengers will have ac when they need it

Love your video, its great. I have a 2004 Camry. The interior looks very similar to yours. This past weekend the we had heavy rain and the passenger window was open a few inches. Now the AC doesn't turn on. The fan blows but the light doesn't come on when I press AC, and the temperature knob doesn't affect anything. Also the defrost button doesn't turn on either. Radio is fine. What do you recommend I troubleshoot?

Sounds like a blown fuse. Without actually seeing the problem it's hard to diagnose. I **believe** the temperature control is moved by a servo motor; if a fuse is blown then no power to that, and it's just possible the rest is on the same fuse. Usually, fuses don't blow for no reason (although it does happen occasionally), so there may be some other problem that would cause the fuse to blow again in short order. Typically the defrost (for the rear window) is on its own fuse, as it pulls a lot of current. It's possible you may have a connection problem on the back of the climate control knobs as well. I'd start by checking all the fuses to see if anything is blown, otherwise, you'll have to pull the panel for the climate control and check there. Good luck.
