The only reliable way to compare oil filter media is with a flow test. Thickness and tear resistance are irrelevant, shedding and flow are important. The function of end glue is to keep the folded pleats together where the tension is highest. As long as the media doesn't separate under the pressure experienced in a normal engine, using more glue than that doesn't increase performance, it wastes material and is an indication of poorer assembly quality control. I've used Toyota and Honda filters made by Denso in China and ones that were labeled made in Japan ( decades ago) and the US. I've never experienced a filtration issue with any of them, or a performance issue with any genuine new Denso part. Denso has very good QC, and routinely samples every shipment. That extra QC is part of what you pay extra for. I have found some obvious (from labelling irregularities) counterfeits that were installed by other people, but the production volumes Chinese factories now are so high that the "counterfeits" are as likely to be contract overruns sold in volume to 3rd channel distributors without labeling or packaging, as they are cheaply made imitations..

The "American" filter is actually a Denso made in Thailand. As you know, automakers are global and source parts from around the world. I just bought a coolant reservoir for my 2012 Chevy Sonic. I bought it from a wholesaler in FL who imports GM parts from Korea. Since the original is made in Korea, this was the same thing. It came with an OEM cap as well for $40. It came in a couple of days and replaced the old one perfectly. They only last a few years (you can buy metal replacements as well), with the last one going over six years. Cheap enough to replace or keep one on hand when replacement is needed. Toyota is now using 0W-08 oil in some models with a footnote in the owner's manual saying, "If 0W-08 is not available, 0W-16 may be used, but must be replaced with 0W-08 at the next oil change." The 0W-08 oil at the present time is very hard to get in the US. I suspect it will take some time for the major oil suppliers to offer it and for it to wind up on the shelf at places like Walmart and the major auto parts stores. As you may know (or will find out being in the aftermarket now), what's "OEM" is getting tougher to decipher. Case in point: GM/Delco brakes. "GM original equipment" is what came on the vehicle originally and sourced from Akebono who supplies the production parts to GM. However, "AC Delco Professional" is Raybestos PG Plus reboxed at a higher price. You have to watch what you're buying as some of it is a straight rebox of aftermarket. As applications age, the OEMs often don't go back to the original suppliers due to cost or the tooling not being available, or a large run of parts being required for them to make them. As applications age, less of them are out on the road, and less are sold. Polk registration data is used to determine what's left. So, GM is not likely going to go back to Akebono for parts on a 20-year-old application when the majority of them are off the road. They will go to the aftermarket for their requirements. Now, as you know, many platforms share parts and that's why you can still get "OEM" parts for a given vehicle---because its sister/brother vehicles are popular, and the stragglers ride those coat tails. That is why parts for my Pontiac G6 convertible are still readily available as they share a lot with the popular Chevrolet Malibu of that same vintage. However, sometimes that's not bad. In the past, TPS sensors came from one source, and that was CTS Corporation who was supplying the whole aftermarket. What would often happen was that parts brokers would buy 5,000 or so parts from CTS directly. Then they would resell them to the big aftermarket suppliers who would catalog them in their books and online files and rebox them for sale at parts retailers and the like. Same with carburetor parts. The choke pull offs, choke thermostats and other control parts were coming from only a few suppliers and being reboxed. I was on the aftermarket parts side for 11 years so I was involved with it firsthand.

@@DCDurayes it is English lol and denso HQ is Japan, the city of Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. They have factories in America and make their plugs in America,, china, Indonesia, Japan. Saying denso is “the anerican filter” is TECHNICALLY wrong, but actually correct as they have factories in America, specifically Michigan and North Carolina.

That part number oil filter 90915-YZZN1 happens to fit my 98 Corolla. It replaced the slightly bigger 90915-YZZF2 filter. Most of these filters are made in Thailand nowadays. The filters from factory when a Toyota is brand new is made in China. On my 1998, it happened to be Japan. Factory part number filters are usually different from the ones at the parts counter.

Not always. Sometimes it's a running change and the supplier changes. Sometimes they change the part number just for that. Sometimes they keep the part number and just change the supplier. I worked in the parts industry on the manufacturer side. In some industries, there were only a few real manufacturers and everyone else just reboxed/relabeled/repackaged parts from those sources.

Should do a burn 🔥 test on the diaphragm, if it burns white it's silicone & if it's black it's rubber, you can also test the media to see if it's cellulose or synthetic media by burning it 🔥, the cellulose burns like paper & the synthetic media melts & bubbles up

The filter are pretty much farm out to whoever offer thr lowest bid. They get one batch from China, and if they find next batch is cheap from Thailand, then you get the Thailand one. And they could even further that to out source to no one know factory and just put the OEM logo on it. Same goes with the elastmeric component.

While the material in the American filter is thicker , micro absorbing capabilities are the key for effective separation of harmful particles, from the lubricant. Doing this test by weighing the filter in dry weight and after submerging in used oil heated to engine operating temperature would be an example of retention of solids while keeping the oil temperature heated during submersion over time.Of course you could actually test in an engine over time each filter. The bench test would reveal any propensity of filtering capabilities greater in one product over another. Writing a quality assurance project plan describing criteria for test seems to be the fairest way to validate the best filter being exposed to the actual process of filtering with or without pressure. Your preliminary test was excellent in demonstrating your conclusion as an initial for purchase analysis, thickness may reveal the ability to absorb more solids or not. Appreciate your time to illustrate the physical difference and possible filtering capabilities. I have 5 Toyota products all running with over 200 k, one with 315+, I use synthetic oil with Dow FS1265 added.

I have ordered filters for my tacoma and got counterfeit ones. My Tacoma takes the 04152-YZZA1 cartridge type, so you just replace the element. compared to a filter I got at the dealership. the Amazon one the print on the box looked cheaper. There was no hologram on the box. the filter media looked like a different color and felt much cheaper, softer , more spongy than the one from the dealer. I returned the amazon one. I found that Walmart sells genuine toyota filters for around $7.00 and if I order them online in quantity of 4 or more and pick them up from the Toyota dealer in the next town I can get them for about $5 each. The Car Care Nut also did a video on Fake Toyota filters a while back. I believe he is also from Chicagoland too. You both are very smart guys. Would be awesome to see you do something together.

Late fifties All accessories they sold increased gas mileage by a percentage so if you bought enough parts from them and you added all the percentages you wouldn't have to buy gas. But to the point. They sold an oil filter canister I believe it was by pass but the filter media was a standard roll of toilet paper. Who knows it may have been full flow. Long time ago and things were different.

The test you could’ve made, but I guess they look pretty, ‘identical’, is to unfold the respective filter’s paper, and compare the length of the stretched out surface areas. Theoretically, more surface area tolerates more collection of filtrate (metal particles) before the “overpressure” situation occurs, and allows blow-by without filtration. In my studies, when an aircraft mechanic, I found changing the oil every 3 to 4000 miles and the filter every OTHER oil change never overloaded the filter. But these observations were on bigger filters on GTO class V8’s.

They take their time and give us useful info for free. I know someone will say, "It's not free. He gets a check from KZbin for posting these videos." So what! I truly appreciate his and everyone else's vids. They are extremely helpful. I call KZbin The Great Equalizer because I am a 50-something y.o. female who is OFTEN quoted outrageous prices for car repairs. Before saying "Okay, go ahead and fix it," I come to YT and watch videos to see exactly what parts I would need for the repair and price them all over the internet. I then see how labor-intensive the repair is, so I have a good idea on if someone's trying to stiff me. A brake shop wanted to charge me $100 to turn my front rotors...I said to him, "Sir, I can buy brand new ones along with brand new brakes for less than that." Needless to say he wasn't happy. So guys, don't just watch. Watch, like, and subscribe if you enjoy the content on ANYONE'S videos. And just in case you're thinking it, NO! I don't know this gentleman. Take care all🥰🥰

I had a chinese timken and autozone wheel bearings fail within 2 weeks....i think buying us oil filters from a reputable seller is best way to go. Btw, told my mechanic that i did not want a cheap chinese cat on focus so he put on a walker.

First time you have shown up in my feed in years! Still cutting apart oil filters and making bank on KZbin....some things never change. Give the people want they want. I personally give zero fucks where my oil filter is made, it will be in the garbage in a few months, and my vehicles run for many hundreds of thousands of miles. To each their own.

American made filter is very course, glue is applied as a blob, paper as mentioned is also not finished . whereas, the Chinese is finished much more cleanly made. Comparison is totally biased.

You must be some kind of special because there was nothing bias about this filter at all it was sent to me by a subscriber that paid for it and asked me to do it so I did it was video content it was something light it was just a demonstration in comparing the two it was never told to be some kind of extensive video where I'm breaking the two of them down and comparing to each other, do better pull your head out of your backside or whenever you're communicating with other influencers on here they're going to block you from their Channel and you could have built relationships with them that could have helped you in the future but instead you run your mouth and you lose those relationships or those potential times where you might need them because you ran your mouth because your ego got the best of you because you couldn't control yourself because your mother never taught you better

WIX filters came highly recommended by my mechanic. They are made in South Carolina, but NAPA is a re- branded WIX.

Not all NAPA filters are reboxed WIX. I believe so far their Platinum and Gold filters are still Wix, but their Silver filters were from China last time I checked. Bottom line is don't let your guard down. I suspect their Platinum and Gold filters will start showing up as made in China.

Deffiently use the toyota oil. While it's an exxon mobil product, they put equal part of molybdenum and zpd. This only has about 700 ppm of molybdenum to reduce friction, and the zpd is there to reduce wear. You won't get an off the shelf oil with this amount of molybdenum. With toyota recommending these low viscosity oil 0w16 or now 0w8 they need this hi molybdenum amount to act as some sort of barrier to reduce the friction and wear since it's not done with viscosity.

Yeah but that's a outdated form of moly it's old school and there is better now that they don't use

From begining to end, the oil filters are fully made from raw materials to finished oil filters. It's a pretty amazing video. I'm not sure of the quality, but it is pretty amazing.

I think it’s sad that most Toyota filters were made in Japan now Thailand and cost sure has not gone down and all the NDenso aftermarket filters are made in China not the same look as yours In the Toyota box and have black nitrile rubber ADBV which are no good they come in a blue box

Thailand for every Denso filter I’ve purchased for my ‘17 Camry and ‘19 CX-5. Quality has been excellent on every filter, which agrees with all the cutaway reviews done by Whip City Wrencher.

@@ChicagoRob2 you must be buying Toyota brand Denso filters as the aftermarket line are all China and come in blue boxes not Toyota white red boxes

@@jimhaines8370 It’s easy to assess the quality of the Camry filter, because it’s a cartridge. It’s extremely durable, and the pleats are perfectly spaced. The core openings are plentiful and large, which provide for unrestricted oil flow. Yes, OEM, Densos are excellent, IMHO.

Looking at the filter media in those two filters makes me wonder if they are exactly the same as the insert filter that my 3.5 liter V6 Tacoma takes, just with a metal can wrapped around it.

That cellulose filter media doesn't do it for me. I have a 2011 camry and I only use synthetic media filters that filter most particles above 20 microns. Purolator Boss, Amsoil, etc. As far as I know a toyota eom filter has good efficiency filtering particles above 30 microns.
