Took my Corolla to a Toyota dealership.. they wanted $1650 for parts and labor for the compressor & receiver dryer! I said no f*** way! thanks for the video!!! can't wait to do this myself!
@myknowledgeguy6 жыл бұрын
You can save a lot of money doing it yourself. I ordered the compressor from carparts.evyy.net/c/247809/306510/4532 for under $400. Then it only cost $105 to have a local shop evact the system and then refill it when I was done. You'll have to call around to make sure you're local shops will do that for you. I do know I looked at the price of the compressor alone from my local dealership and they wanted $750 for it. Depending on what happened to your compressor replacing the receiver dryer is a good idea. I didn't replace mine only because my clutch went bad and not the compressor. Therefore I knew there wasn't a bunch of metal shavings floating around in the system. If your compressor went bad consider replacing both. It's really simple. The receiver dryer is right there in front for you. Unscrew the hoses put new o-rings on and tighten everything back. Completely simple.

One question so after you install the AC pump it’s ok to drive with it as long as you put the oil in it? I no it sounds funny but just trying to make sure
@myknowledgeguy Жыл бұрын
It's ok to drive the car once you put things back together. As long as you don't turn on the AC or run the Defrost your vehicle won't run the AC so your compressor will be fine as the pulley bearing is not lubed by the AC oil.

David Searson no I don’t own a vacuum pump or AC recovery machine. Which is why I had a local shop recover the R-134A that was in my system before I started and then had them vacuum out and refill my system after I was done. Something I’d suggest to anyone who is going to work on their AC system.

I saw your video and I replaced the last compressor because the clutch was failed. I bought new AC compressor, but it is making intermittent snore noises for 1-2 seconds even though the AC is off and the engine is running. After turning on the AC the noise disappears until the AC compressor stops and makes the snore noise and then disappears when the AC turns on. I checked the gauge and looks OK but when the AC compressor is idle the gauges move a little bit and make the snore sound. Any idea on this?
@myknowledgeguy Жыл бұрын
It sounds like your clutch is very slightly applied all the time. Not enough to be engaged but enough to drag slightly. I would check your power and ground to your clutch and make sure that its not getting slightly turned on when it's not supposed to be. Past that you may have to check clutch clearance and adjust. It

When you took off the lines from old one, did Freon go everywhere? I’m about to do this
@myknowledgeguy Жыл бұрын
I had my system vacuumed down so there was no refrigerant in it before I unhooked any line. If you don’t do so it will come out and spray everywhere. FYI technically it is illegal to release R-134A out to the atmosphere. Although it’s not easy to get caught doing so.

Great video and thanks! Did you change the drier, too? I might have missed it if that was covered.
@Dodgepower745 жыл бұрын
Brent Grayson I thought I covered that, but it’s possible I didn’t. I did not change the receiver drier only because my compressor did not break internally. It was just the clutch so to save money I skipped replacing the drier. I know I should replace it anytime I open the system but I was going cheap.

I was quoted $1,600 by a shop I usually trust! Can I clear the lines myself, or do I have to take it into a shop for that?
@myknowledgeguy Жыл бұрын
Honestly, unless your compressor grenaded or you used "stop leak" at some point I wouldn't worry about cleaning your lines. If you do feel like you need to clean your lines then there are kits and cleaners you can buy and do yourself. It's just spraying a cleaner in your lines and then blowing them out to get it out. Most manufacturers suggest you don't clean lines anymore because it's hard to get the cleaning solution out of the lines and it can do damage to the compressor if too much is left in the system.

Do you recall the amount of R134 you added?
@myknowledgeguy5 жыл бұрын
I had a shop recover all the R134 in my system before I started so it was in a vacuum before I started. Then when I was done they sucked it back down into a vacuum before refilling it. I don't remember how much they put back in but they said they didn't need to charge me for any extra R134 because my system was full when they recovered to start. If you need to know how much your system holds there is a sticker under the hood that tells you that information. Otherwise let me know and I'll check, mine to give you an idea.

(I added another ounce to it just to be safe but didn't spin it anymore after that)

It does happen sometimes. It really depends on if you put it in the suction side or the pressure side. Also depends on if the compressor was prefilled from the factory.

Guy, is your ac working fine now? I guess you didn't do correct measurement of pag 46 oil before putting it into compressor
@myknowledgeguy4 жыл бұрын
No, I estimated the correct amount of oil. Yes, it works great. If you go to a shop and have them work on your AC you'll be hard-pressed to find a shop that actually measures an exact amount of oil for AC systems. AT best they will look at the amount that came out when they recycled your Refrigerant, then dump out as much as they can from whatever part they replace and try to put close to that much back in. Most times they just add back in 2-3 ounces and call it good. It's actually worse for your system to have too much than not enough. Your AC system can't cool with oil, the oil is only there to lube up seals and rings in the compressor, as long as there's some you'll be ok. Which is why I wasn't worried about measuring exactly how much I needed. I know I was close.
@safetyalways77884 жыл бұрын

What is the actual name to ask for when taking it into the shop for the ac vacuum? Also, what kind of oil do you use in the compressor itself? I'm not sure it was just engine oil...
@myknowledgeguy4 жыл бұрын
You want to ask your shop to evacuate your AC system. Then when you are done you will have them vacuum the system out and fill it back up. You will us PAG 46 oil. You can't use engine oil it will destroy the entire system.

How do I figure out how much oil my compressor is suppose to take ?
@myknowledgeguy4 жыл бұрын
You won't find any information on how much the compressor alone holds. What you will find is the entire system holds roughly 7oz of PAG 46 oil. That said unless you have a way of completely draining the entire system of oil this number means almost nothing. So your best bet is when you remove the compressor is to drain all the oil you can from it. Measure how much is removed then add that much to the new compressor. This way you add about what was removed from the system. I was not as precise but it worked out.

If your compressor is good and if it’s just a clutch that needs replacing do you still have to drain the coolant?
@myknowledgeguy6 жыл бұрын
While you could replace just the AC clutch with the compressor in the car. It would not be easy, nor would I suggest it. Anytime you remove the AC compressor from the car you will have to drain the refrigerant and have it refilled by someone with the proper equipment. My AC clutch is what was broke and although I could have just replaced the clutch. I replaced the whole compressor because you never know why the clutch broke. I couldn't prove the compressor was perfect and just need a clutch. Not to mention the last thing I wanted was to replace the clutch then have the compressor break less than year later, causing me to replace the clutch and compressor again. To me it was worth doing the whole job so I won't have to worry about the chance of doing it again.
@nykedria2526 жыл бұрын
Ok thank u! I will get the whole kit. The shop charge too much install that small part. Over $270 in labor
@myknowledgeguy6 жыл бұрын
Most of that is because they will charge you to pull the compressor out to change the clutch. That's what the book says to do so that's what they charge for. Plus with as easy as it is to remove I'd pull the compression to, unless I was trying not to have to evac and recharge the system. A Lot of time the cost in labor to replace a part on the compressor is more than the whole compressor for that specific reason. You pay for removal of the whole compressor plus labor for the smaller part also.
