This is something I always wonder. When a manufacturer says "we are retiring this car because it did not sell well", did anyone check to see how was this car being priced by the dealerships?

They do understand. That's what the 86 is. The 86 is cheap because the costs are shared with Subaru. I doubt any low volume, 100% in house designed and built vehicle will be cheap anymore.

Both the MR2 and ESPECIALLY the Celica were always affordable sports cars and fairly no-frills and spartan. I can already see them ditching all that and making them super powerful fancy cars that no one will really be able to afford. I'll stick with my 88' Supra and 01' Celica GT-S.

All the heat cost and CO2 emissions is spent during manufacture, using exotic, rare earth materials to make the batteries, cars are still essentially metal bodies with plastic niteriors running on rubber tires, they don't have long service life and therefore end up getting dumped soon as well as being harder to recycle. Above it all, cars are astill being manufacturered in the 10s of millions per year. None of this is sustainable, lol. I love all cars are a capitolist consumer, but we have to recognise the fact, there is no one technology that 'save's all', lol.

I'd love a Celica or MR 2 as I'm single middle aged and admired those cars when I was growing up 90s early 2000s the only other car I wish Toyota would revive is the Camry Solara though in that case I'm partial to the Camry because my late maternal grandmother owned two as her last cars and younger brother inherited the last one when she stopped driving for med reasons in 2016 has less than 40k miles on it at 20 yrs. old

Toyota is going to be killing off their model before it's even released if they price the MR2 at the $60-70k range. Also the MR2 has already been hinted to be the FT-SE from a while back, and the Celica has been mostly in the dark by Toyota. The S-FR has been rumored to go into production since they are building a vehicle with Daihatsu and not Mazda. That vehicle is to be priced under the $20k range, "supposedly".

I wanted a Supra for years and when I recently priced a new one locally, the otd is close to 70k. The new Tesla model 3 performance really upped its game offering more power and suspension upgrades, as well as the refreshed look. At 47.5k or 52k otd, I couldnt pass it up especially since it checked the boxes like 4 doors, safety, storage, comfort and that 17 speaker sound system. Ill never track a car and I dont get out to the canyons much so for far less money, i got a quicker awd car that has been a blast to drive. Sure it will depreciate faster but at the price and apr % and low insurance cost, it makes more sense financially for me. I hope they dont price out their potential customers with these exciting new offerings.

I remember in the early 2000's I was OBSESSED with getting an MR2...that thing was called Baby Ferrari for a reason! There was even a guy in Vegas that built out a SW20 with 700+ HP!!! The last gen MR2 and Celica that came out were just jokes and looked like absolute ass.

Great cars, but what Honda, Toyota and other manufacturers are doing it putting the name plate from a formerly inexpensive performance car and jacking up the price into Porsche territory. The original MR2 was inexpensive if you stayed with the base engine. The Celica was the quintessential hot hatch, quick, inexpensive, fun. The only hot hatches (some aren't even hatches anymore) left are the Civic SI, Golf GTI and WRX. All can be had for around $30k. The Subaru/Toyota BRZ/GR is also great fun for the money.

manual transmission is the only option I would entertain... and I've had a few toyotas, and still have a toyota truck, and their manual trans's are the best. Especially compared to what the Supra did... bmw engine with that magnificent manual transmission is far better than bmw..so I could see a lot of BMW owners moving to a toyota MR2, or maybe the celica if it was sporty, classy and powerful enough to take on their 2 series... but probably not going to pull the Porsche people over without something spectacular. which Toyota could absolutely pull off if they made a special version like an inline 6 cylinder, twin turbo.

my first new car i bought myself was a fully loaded 1991 MR2 with t tops, it was a blast...I just turned 21 then. the next generation of MR2, the convertible one was (i think) ugly as hell and underpowered... hope they get the next one right! edit: oh! and to your point about 'poor man's ferrari'... i did indeed get asked once if it was a ferrari, at a stop light in hollywood.

Has there ever been an AWD mid engine car? There aren't many mids to think of. Maybe a Lamborghini but those aren't even real cars. They're more like a cross between art,space ship and vibrating marital aid. I'd be happy with a slightly updated gen 2 MR2 with electric hub motors in front for under $30k. With a trunk while I am wishing. No more snap oversteer 😅.

What I don’t understand is that their biggest and most loyal enthusiast won’t get a chance at it, I rather have Porsche 718 then a MR2 especially with that money. Why not create an entry level MR2 that more reasonable in price and then make a better version with better specs for the wealthier buyers? I wish I had the money to start a car company, I’d love to make a reasonably priced, mid engine car for car enthusiasts of all incomes.

Ditch the 86 for an MR2. The 86 has always been a bit, nah! Celica 2+2. Yes. Then Supra 2 seater. Here’s a thing. Give them their own name. Build the GR name. Go racing. Seriously racing! Can we have a V8 version of the Supra as a 2++2 to coincide with the Supercars entry? The 4.0 ltr is still a good engine but maybe needs a GR upgrade. A modern day Porsche 928? Much underrated.

Price-wise....if Toyota even comes close to pricing them where they are being reported to....they're idiots. Just like when Nissan relaunched the Z in the early 2000's....Carlos Chosn said in his internal company meeting (I worked for Nissan Finance HQ at the time), he wanted to bring the Z back and make it the "affordable, $20,000 sports car." But when it actually launched.....$34,000+. And it just kept going up. Toyota needs to start the MR2 around $28k, and the Celica around $35k to even BEGIN to see people choosing them over other cars. With the death of the Charger, Challenger, Camaro, the Z series (the newest one was DOA), and virtually every other sports car, there are so few options that to start pricing them at $70 would be insanity.
