As an American living in Japan, I see this Land Cruiser news as an absolute win. I wish the Hilux EV could be sold in the US though. Automakers know what customers want, but they don’t seem to care as much as the stuff they want us to have.🤷♂️ Enjoyed the car news.

Apparent one reason the 70 wouldn’t sell in the US is because of the 2016 NHTSA side and curtain airbag mandate. Chicken tax too. You’d be paying $45-$50k for one in the end if Toyota decides to sell it in the US and add side airbags. If not more.

It is known that emissions and safety regulations are usually the biggest obstacle to import a truck like the 70 series in the US. However, it seems that this one has safety features that could pass these tests. Swap a 4cil turbo like the one in the new Tacoma and good deal. This would sell like crazy if under 35k

Most people are better off with the new Tacoma or the landcruiser 250. Unless it is getting heavy day to day use then the economics of the 70 series doesn’t add up. When the hilux was introduced around 1980 most users went for it over the landcruiser the extra strength of the landcruiser was hard to justify the much greater purchase price. It had a number of practical drawbacks, extra weight and under slung leaf springs etc. If it was sold in the US it would be very niche market vehicle. If one doesn’t like the 4Runner one would like the 70 series as really it is designed to be a flatbed truck, the wagon versions way too basic.

On the road price this will be around 5 mil yen here, which is a lot for this actually. There is just one trim level and one engine choice. It has the same 2.8 diesel engines as in my 150 series. There are no cars available to test drive here, and its on a lottery system. Basically you out your name down, and if you win you can then buy the car. But you can not cancel once you enter the lottery. I would never buy a car that I cant first test drive. Its redicoulous...but loads will just go ahead and buy it anyway with out even sitting in it. I like this a lot, but my lc 150 is only just over a year old and I am more than happy with it. Buying this would actually be a downgrade for me. Anyone wanting a lc for the first time or have an old car they want to upgrade then this would be a good choice. It comes in either white, black or beige as colour choices.
