What an incredible no bullshit review. This is a car with so many features you have to spend a lot more money on to get it right. I’ve driven the same vehicle with 100 K spent on it...And it was amazing. But then it was a 250 K vehicle. I spent 20 K on the Isuzu and it’s an 80 K vehicle. No regrets. @@humbertorubi2735 of course no car is perfect, I didn't say that. These dual cabs are very costly to buy in the first place and Toyota throw in major design faults. Why did you think I was talking about the Jeep Wrangler or discovery, I'm telling you these 2 cars are far, far better off the show room floor. The 79 has a crap interior, very small interior as well, for a company to sell a 4WD with 100mm smaller rear track is just ridiculous. The power out from this so called powerful V8 diesel is woeful, I don't care what they say, need to spend another $5000 to get up to a moderate output. The suspension is very average, need to spend a fortune here. Ground clearance is very poor, need to spend a big fortune here. Standard tyres are far to small, need spend more money. No storage anywhere, so need to spend a fortune here. And the alternator is just crap, in a crap location and these sealed water units are costly, another fortune. Changing out the rear diff assembly is very costly, another fortune here. The starter motor is in a crap location, do lots of water crossing you will drown it, another fortune here. The sound system, well it really doesn't have one, need to charge that out. Now don't get me wrong, when they are fully modified and kitted with the best gear, they are great, but you will send up to and over $150,000, got to be kidding. I nearly forgot, you can't get a auto transmission only a manual.

I always hate filling my 100 series Sahara petrol wagon at 20lt per 100km city cycle and 15lt per 100km but after seeing the consumption rates of the 79 I'm much happier. 100 rides like a limo and has every creature comfort known to man other than a built in foot massager. Second hand it's also $20000 to $30000 cheaper than a 79 and that's a lot of fuel ! Great review Ronny as always !

Toyota's focus market for the 70's is mining, agriculture, the UN, Red Cross and the NGOs.Someone I knew at Toyota said the recreation market only makes up less than 10%. So creature comforts is the last on their thinking. I used to work with some of these NGOs back in Africa. The drivers abuse the vehicles and don't really care. Routine servicing was mostly never on time. Yet these were just about the only vehicles that could take the punishment and still last at least half a mil kms. One construction company I knew had a replacement policy of 800,000kms or a write-off, which ever came first. Most of their fleet worked in rural africa on infrastructure projects usually carrying loads well in excess of 1.5tonnes over poorly maintained gravel roads. As for the narrower rear axle, it's is aimed at carrying more load capacity which the 70's core market looks for.

Appreciate the honest review mate. This is why I will never update my Land Rover Discovery 2. For around $10k-$15k you get beautiful interior, more room, huge head room, extremely efficient TD5 (though needs more power), solid, coil sprung front and rear diffs, off-road traction control and down hill decent and is easy to fix. Throw $20k at it and it competes with anything off-road and does so in comfort. The cruiser is a beast of a truck and does what it needs to incredibly well, its just the cost of them is absurd to what you get.

A great honest review. Basically they are a money pit. The money you spend on these vehicles is absolutely ridiculous. I know this to be true because I have an 08 single cab. I drive a Defender 110 that's a year older than your 79. Interior comfort, everything you said about the LC could have been said about the LR. Handbrake: same problem. Fuel: massive difference. Road use sat all day at 110kph I get 33mpg (imperial) which I think converts to about 8.5l/100km. That's fully loaded up for weeks away from home, loads of water, food, fridge, spares, awning etc etc. I now see why you need to carry so much fuel! Of course the Defender has its own set of irritating quirks! That said, for me, the only two vehicles worth considering are the 110 hardtop (van) and the 78 Troopie, and for me the Defender wins. Not to say it couldn't easily be bettered, it just hasn't been.

Great review Ronny. I recently looked into both the 79 & 200 as a potential replacement for my 1993 factory turbo 80 as I rolled her. The high Stressed 4 cylinder utes don't grab me. My conclusion on the 79 was basically just as your review. The 200 was very nice but the price tag with a huge weight and a lack of payload and other mods needed I ruled it out. The 79 is a good tough truck with a great engine but the leaf springs and different axle widths and the noisy 1980 interior ruled it out also. I decided to repair and improve my 1993 80. It has only done 230000ks and on Dgas and fully loaded towing a van at around 15s to 17s. It will soon be a solid beefed up 6 cylinder TD 4.2 twin cab with coil sprung solid axles with diff locks and no expensive computerized technology under the bonnet. Unfortunately good 80s are hard to find. The 79 is the best on the market now and I hope Toyota keep them coming but the fixes you mentioned would be a great step forward. Don't hold your breath.

Hi Ronny, Regarding your fuel economy, is that with the larger tires taken into consideration? Im assuming the odometer is still counting as if your vehicle has the standard tyres. Changing to a larger diameter tyre will cover a larger distance per full rotation compared to an oem tyre so the fuel economy might not be as bad as you say. Im looking to get into a 76 and appreciate your honest review.
@Redman33547 жыл бұрын
Just a little FYI. They keep the rear wheel track narrower to maintain the higher rear axle loading capacity. As can be seen by many aftermarket upgrades, the rear axle needs some serious beefing up to keep the load capacity with the extra width. Everyone talks about how bad it is that Toyota haven't widened the axle for the VDJ, but every 70 series has been the same. 75s and hdj7x both had narrower rear wheel track. Even leaf rear patrols have a narrower rear track for the same reason. It's all about providing an axle that can last 500k kms at full load.
@6226superhurricane7 жыл бұрын
nearly all vehicles have a slightly narrower rear track it helps handling. except most vehicles it's 20-30mm. in the 79 it has nothing to do with carrying capacity as they could easily make a wider stronger diff housing with the same carrying capacity. what it boils down to is it's a low volume vehicle and toyota wants to spend as little as necessary.

michael close ..I thought it helped handling also, it's about weight transfer when cornering. All my Hilux's have narrower rear track. They spent millions designing and testing them, surely it can't be just about using any old diff housing they have in stock.. I'd love to know. Cheers mate

Sadly they're not available in the US...I'd take a more simple vehicle any day over the bloated electronics they got in vehicles now. Factory front and rear lockers are pretty uncommon at least here in the US....more commonly you find a rear limited slip if you are lucky...most people skip that because it costs more and truthfully most people at least in the US have no use for any additional traction aids, and wouldn't have any idea how to use a locker anyhow.

The price tag for a 70 series is way cheaper in Middle East. Count 40KUSD for a well equipped 79 (LX but with some options making it "almost" a GXL). Petrol V6 and Diesel V8 are available. Maybe the right hand wheel conversion is what justifies (!) the premium in Australia, as well as contamination-controlled exhaust. That car is a very special one, with little compromise. I have seen and used it in Central Africa, in Egypt and now in Central America. I recently bought mine and upgraded it as an investment, planning to keep it all my life (am 46). You cannot plan such thing with any other car. Nothing compares to it.

Great stuff ronny. As you mentioned like any vehicle there are foibles and there are compromises and there are aspects to ownership that are less than ideal. And superficially it seems expensive given that it's so basic (cheap stereo, average seats, 1980s style interior, aircon not standard, harsh ride etc etc. etc) BUT........... what are you really buying? You're not paying for that stuff are you? That's what land rover discoveries are for........... You can sort that out and customize it yourself as you wish. What you're paying for is (and I know there'll be a few people who don't want to hear this) the ONLY real tough, simple , reliable proper solid axle, robust, no nonsense get the bloody job done 4x4 that is still currently for sale. The only 4x4 platform that hasn't yet "gone soft" You're also paying for extremely reliable and well proven components that are built to last..... And for that alone it's worth the money. You mention they hold their value incredibly well................ there's a very good reason for that........................

So if my math is correct, your LandCruiser with the turbodiesel V8 can get anywhere from 14 miles/gallon to 18 miles/gallon, depending on speed and driving style. Granted that is a fully modified 4x4 with more weight and bigger tires over a stock vehicle, but still that surprises me. I believe there are 3/4 ton diesel pickups here in North America that can return similar fuel economy, if not slightly better, though those vehicles have gearing and tire sizes that are optimized for highway efficiency.

I think that a good Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is a nice starter as well. But if size is an issue, then a Toyota Tacoma would be a great choice. It will be heaps more comfortable than the 79 series; especially for a 6ft guy.

Love the 79 and have had one myself so do speak from experience. What I couldn’t easily fix and still can’t figure out though is how people deal with these things on a long trip. I wish there was a fix as I love em! I do only country kms 800+ a week... would be great to know how to make it a nice place to smash out the kms on a big trip. I don’t know what it is, but very fatiguing and a draining vehicle to drive. Do you find this Ronny and have you done anything to help? Things that come to mind are sound deadening to quiet it down. Lower RPM on the new ones has helped but still felt the same experience overall when I drove one the other day again. Mate with v8 troopy says exact same...

Never thought that its back seat would be that awful. But over all it's awesome vehicle.

what i will say is that there is no car out there that "holds its value really well". every car depreciates. yes these cars may go for 60k second hand, but think about how much you spent on it new. e.g. a new car worth 20k may sell second hand for 12k. another new car worth 50k might sell for 35k second hand. at the end of the day a brand new 79 series worth 80k then sells second hand for 60k which hasnt "held its value" like people say, it just cost more to buy, therefore sells for a high price second hand.
