HUGE fan of Nissan VQ-series engines. Owned a 6 cylinder 2007 Nissan Altima (with CVT). Bought new. Sold it with 155,000 miles. Outside of the typical oil, tires, brakes, the car operated flawlessly. No problems with the CVT. Great acceleration. Comfortable seats. Best HVAC system I've ever had in a car. Currently own a 2012 Pathfinder, bought with 140,000 miles. So far, so good. Pathfinder gets about 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, but that is to be expected from a 2012 body on frame SUV. All that being typed, I am meticulous about maintenance and I don't race from traffic light to traffic light.

Actually, the pathfinder switched between unibody and body on frame. The first gen was based on the hard body, so it was body on frame. 2nd gen was unibody but it retained the solid rear axle. Third gen was based on the frontier, also body on frame. When the 4th gen was designed they needed something to replace the poorly selling Quest minivan, so they moved the pathfinder back to unibody. The 5th gen looks like a truck based SUV, but it's still unibody.

I am just started watching this and can not wait for you to find problems of all kinds, I had a Nissan Maxima and over the years most everything broke down from brakes to windows to fuel injectors injectors to the blower fan and transmission and with everything broken it would not be a simple repair, on brakes the rotors needed to be replaced as well as the pads every 40k miles or so, I have a Highlander with 62k miles now it is 12 years old and it has been trouble free still on the original brakes as well.

I felt the problems came from the lack of maintenance from my lady not doing oil changes and just maintenance overall. Second car I currently have is a Nissan Sentra. Not the greatest looking or fast car but somewhat more reliable than the maxima. I never worked on a Nissan CVT, so can't say anything bad about them either, which still may not inspire me to buy one... But if it ever came down to it, I'd want to hear from someone who actually does rebuild or replace them as to which ones are or aren't total junk.

@@EpicDrew15 A friend of mine is a design engineer. His job is to make things that work and pass duty cycle tests and real world tests... Once his machines are tested and certified, the cost reduction team comes in prior to and during production. Then he is usually sent into the field to determine why the machines fail... Most of his job at the point is reversing the cost reductions that make the machine unreliable as they fail. This process insures that every cost reduction that gets through the warranty period and standard duty is implemented and those that cause the machine to fail to early or too often get resolved. And that's on machines that cost over one million dollars each. For parts that don't fail too often there's a TSB and an upgrade kit for the field service techs to install under warranty or at customer cost down the road.

I was told by a friend one of the biggest mistakes made with the CVT transmissions is customers not servicing them because dealers love to tell them the lie its sealed and lifetime fluid. He said people that serviced their CVT's every 25k-30k which he recommends did not run into the serios problems others did. I have heard that Renault owns a 43% stake in the company and the Japanese firm only 15%. I looked this up and this seems to be true. That being said Nissan is not as Japanese made as it once was so that explains things to me. My wife had a 2013 pathfinder. We liked it at first cause it was loaded with features but it started having cvt issues and catalytic converter issues and a clunk in the awd system.

Good thing I'm looking to get a Toyota Corolla instead of a Nissan, 2020-current model.

How can brake pads completely wear out by 40k miles? Especially the back brakes.

It’s a heavy suv with small brakes.

Can you review the new Nissan Frontier? Many are calling this truck the Tacoma killer.

Nissan has never had to recall their CVTs, nor has the NHTSA ever conducted an investigation into them. Nissan powertrain warranty claims also remain low. Perhaps, people aren't changing the fluid at the required intervals (found in the owners manual)?

As a DIY, I'd like to see the replacement of the front CV Axles in a Toyota truck.

I love the new pathfinder though. Whether it proves to be reliable is another question.

Had a 2015 pathfinder for about 6 years. Had the cvt replaced, it had the shudder and stalling issue. Nissan paid for 90% of the replacement thanks God, it came out to 11k. Yes the dreaded rear brakes. Not sure why they put the suspension part their so you couldn't get the bottom bolt out. Overall like you said there easy to work on until you get under the hood. I went back to toyota and I won't own another brand. Seems other car manufacturers are not as good as Toyota.
