Toyota makes the mistake of calling the Drive Modes and Operating Modes, MODES. We need to distinguish between the two and what they really mean. This video breaks it all down in a FUN way to help you understand why a Toyota software programmer is retired drinking Mai Tai's and Pina Colada's in the Bahamas!
The Toyota Prius Prime has three DRIVE MODES which operate with all the operating techniques. They are:
ECO Mode, most fuel efficient, regulates air conditioning for fuel economy
NORMAL Mode, perfect for driving around town where a bit more power is needed and fuel economy can be less
PWR Mode, needed for very fast acceleration such as merging with traffic
In addition to the three drive modes the Toyota Prius Prime has four gas/electric-battery techniques for fuel consumption and economy. The three modes can be used interchangeably with these techniques.
EV Technique/Mode will attempt to use the electric-battery 100% of the journey for 25+ miles until the battery is depleted.
EV Auto Technique/Mode will also attempt to use the electric-battery but will switch over to gas when situations demand.
HV Technique/Mode is what I call the Prius mode. Just like a non-EV Prius it uses the gas/electric-battery combination to power the car.
Charge Technique/Mode is a special HV option that uses the gas engine to charge up the battery while the vehicle is sitting still or while driving.

Love the video, thanks for this. Ignore the clowns who just focus on the negatives (talking too much etc) We just picked up a Prius Prime upgrade here in Canada and have only been in EV auto since we bought it 6 months ago. We also have a Tesla Model 3. We love both of these cars equally. The price of the Prius Prime with our government rebates makes it a no brainer purchase. Keep up the great work Sir!

Great and funny video. I tend to stick in normal mode for a good balance of power and economy mode. Eco mode is just a little too sluggish on the accelerator for my taste. Also, in standard EV mode, the car will stay in EV until 85mph, after that speed the gas engine will automatically kick on.

Thank you so much for the comment. I was more referring to the fact of what happens when the EV battery is spent. I drove in Michigan so I know some people drive 85+ and good luck with that. Michigan now has a State Trooper every 50 miles on I-75.

I stick with Eco mode all the time, since I drive like an old man anyway. I drive a lot of hilly highways, and I find that the engine does kick in on the steepest hills at highway speeds in EV Mode. It kicks in on moderate hills in EV Auto.

Me too. However, I live in the FREE state of Florida which is mostly flat. Therefore, I have to remember to use Power mode or run the battery down from time to time.

Hey I also worked on the Digital computers PDP-11, I memorized the switches for the boot program. Programming was all in Assembler language. No one understands today, what machine language is!. Out team wrote all the OS, device drivers from scratch. I also used PDP-8 prior to that. THanks for the video, still waiting for my 2022 Prius prime to be delivered. Stuck on a ship in the Pacific!

Appreciate the energy and enthusiasm, be yourself people with negativity just simply won't get it, i had a prius before and been contemplating this car so watching your video helped, thanks for making it keep em coming!! Someone in another video said car wouldn't switch from gas to electric and back without having to turn car off. is that the case or can you switch from any mode at any time while you drive?
@thatcybersecguy
@thatcybersecguy 2 жыл бұрын
You can switch anytime. However, I felt a lurch in the car which I don't think is good. No evidence of that. I wait until I'm sitting at a stoplight to change techniques.
@thatcybersecguy
@thatcybersecguy 2 жыл бұрын
That is incorrect in my experience. The Prius Prime will switch manually or automatically between modes. Good luck getting one with the supply chain issues.

What I am trying to tease out concerns the starter battery in my 2010 Prius. My battery died and less than a year old. I drive about 3 times a week or more but short distances in Eco mode and not exceeding 26 MPH (inter city driving) Is the eco mode not re-charging the battery I wonder. Or does it need more driving and faster?

EV Auto and HV....isnt that the whole point of "hybrid"? What does it need 2 separate buttons to do that?
@thatcybersecguy
@thatcybersecguy 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is in EV only mode the Prius Prime will fight like HELL to use the battery ONLY until the battery charge is exhausted. Toyota provided the EV Auto mode to make it easier for the hybrid to switch between gas and battery when the roads become more difficult. Sounds strange I know but it makes sense in weird way.

@@thatcybersecguy do your thing man, but the problem is that your title is essentially clickbait. If you want to vlog, that's great, you would be good at it, but people clicking on this video are looking for something totally different than what this is. Not sure if you understand why this your most popular video, but it's not the content, it's the title. Again, your an interesting dude who's good at vloging, give it a go! Just be more honest about what your videos are. This is a 25 minute video that provides less insight than Toyota's 45 second video on this topic.
