When I bought my 2017 TRD new I had the dealer add a tonneau cover. They installed a Extang 2.0 Solid Fold, which was expensive and high quality. The cover is OK, but after seeing the OEM one, I would rather have the Toyota version.

Mike thanks for the videos. I have a 2017. On your tailgate lock, you can go to pop a lock website and they have a kit you can install that works with your door locks. When you unlock your doors it unlocks the tailgate, when you lock your doors the tailgate locks. I really like mine, beats carry extra keys.

I just purchased a 2018 Toyota Tacoma and also have the OEM cover. My key in the remote control does open the cover. At first I thought that it didn’t, but once I fiddled with it, it worked. The plastic lip on the key has to face left. I’m not sure if it’s different for the 2016 but thought that I would mention it just in case. Thanks for the great videos.

Have you looked at a cover for your 22 Tundra? The OEM seem to be built well. They also attach to the rail system and provide an additional rail to use. Any decent after market cover is about the same price.

How much weight does it hold on top? I use to have an avalanche and I could put 2 beach chairs on top and sit on them. My ex was about 160 and I was about 180 And it felt super solid. Just curious to know if you can stand on it.

You can use the key that's on the remote, it just want to lock or unlock from one side and not the other. So it matters how you insert it in.

Oh great, I was looking around for an aftermarket hard tonneau but now I'll have to cough up the money for this one from Toyota, I have a solid fold by Extang on my other pickup which is similar but not built nearly as strong and the paint is peeling off of it from the sun I think. I found one on Craigslist locally for $575 so there are some good deals on used ones or you could also go with a non-OEM cover. There seem to be several comparable products out there that are more reasonably priced.

I have a 2017 Tacoma Sport and love the look but hate the lack of utility space the hard cover provides. With the 5' bed and the cover folded back there is very little room to haul cargo. My bike won't even fit without taking off the front wheel. The cover looks great but only allows a scant 5' x 3' of cargo room and that doesn't take into account the fender wheels. I am making plans to remove and sell mine.....Thanks for the descriptive review.

Great video. An FYI and warning, although might be stating the obvious, do not let ice accumulate in any amount on the cover and then fold it up completely. Damages it beyond repair. Great cover otherwise. Driest solution I've ever had in a tonneau cover, but plastic is brittle, especially when cold.

Hey Mike how is these cover holding up after 4 years? I bought a used 2017 Tacoma with the tonneau and it was fading and turning blue, so I sprayed it with Raptor Liner and it looks great. So if it is fading like most of them do, try spraying it and it will look brand new.

I read somewhere and tried it on mine, you can use a hand held propane torch or heat gun and gently, carefully, heat the faded surface and the color will come back. Use constant, even, sweeping motions back and forth.

There's not much to install. It basically just pops into place and there is a single screw as a safety

Pretty sure you can buy them from Toyota pre-cut as well, but they'll cost a fortune. I did it with an exacto knife, sanded down any rough spots with a dremmel... that was the only hard part of the install. You can also use a dremmel to cut the notches, which would be a lot quicker, but I feel like you have a lot more control doing it with a knife. Especially when cutting out the corners of each notch. Just take your time scoring the plastic, it's semi-soft so it doesn't take a ton of effort. The spots that need to be cut out are pre-marked on the underside of the rail caps. If you find one of these on the used market, ask the seller if they'd swap their bed rail caps with yours (assuming they're still in good condition) to make the install super easy.

You can use the key that's in the fob to lock the bed. Maybe flip your key around and try But i use my fob key all the time. Its a 2021 though so maybe they changed that

You mentioned the last 3rd not having the ability to be latched down. Well, I did exactly what you mentioned, the last 3rd crashing down in handlebars. I have a hole in my cover. Do you have/know the link to get the OEM Tacoma cover? I really don't want a vinyl cover from Amazon or anywhere else. Only owned my Tacoma for a month. I appreciate the response!

Yes, I put a crack in my cover with handlebars as well. I don't have a link to the OEM cover but I regularly see these pretty cheap on Craigslist. I'd keep an eye out there for a replacement.

Just a heads up. On my ‘17 Tacoma TRD OR, I can open my tailgate with my remote key. It only fits in one way. Hope this helps. When I bought my Taco I tried to get the dealer to include the oem cover but no luck. I ended up going with a roll up low profile one which I am happy with. Love your videos and keep em coming. I have owned my Tacoma for about 8 months and I have the same cover. I love the metal latches and how secure it is once it is locked. The other brands (Bak Flip etc) all use plastic latches which can easily be broken. My issues with the OEM cover are 1) condensation on the inside of the cover and 2) minor leaks. I didn't have any problems during the warmer months but during the Fall and Winter - i get condensation. Does anyone have the same issue? I noticed you, Mike, have frost on the inside. I suspect you have condensation problem too. Thanks for posting.

Truck tonneau bed covers will only give noticeable 1-2mpg savings at highway speeds. noticeable around 65mph, but no gas or handling advantage at regular road 40mph speeds

This is a stock cover from Toyota and would be available from the dealer or probably a bit cheaper online. There are aftermarket versions that are similar that may offer additional cost savings, but I've been very pleased with this product.

You can buy locking tailgates. We're getting one for our 2011 Taco and then getting a tonneau cover. The locking tailgate is about $100.

The cover is useless. You want to haul a fridge, I say there are motor dirt bikes that need to get fully to the front of the bed. They gaff you the 650 for it though it is built well. The big cab and the long bed are hard to find on the lot and if that is what you want, you pretty much need to take what they have for other options. I had a specific truck in mind and I was told that it does not exist. This is what I told them, Big cab, long bed, trailer tow, JBL, leather, sunroof, chrome rear bumper. They said that I would need to combine a limited and an SR5 but a limited does not come with a long bed. I say BS. One more thing that is usless is the short bed, it has about as functional as a scooter with a milk carton on the back. Okay, smart asses, let me have it now, tell me if I don't like it buy a ford, Chevy, or Dodge. I just might after trying to buy my Toyota for the last 6 months. I really don't want to go there.

You can get the off road 4x4 in a long bed and the double cab. I opted not to get the package that includes the sunroof, leather interior and jbl upgrade. I did get the technology package which gives you nav and wireless charging backup sensors and lane change alert. Also got the towing package and blackout package. On the tacomaworld boards you will find many a tacoma owner that opt not to get the factory leather because the quality is not all that great. Most get the cloth interior and buy the clazzio leather seat covers for about $500 for the full interior. They look better than factory and you install them yourself. Coupon code Tacomaworld will get you $101 off. They run $599 for single color and about $100 or so for stitching and emblem upgrades. I agree that you have to have a long bed for this cover to even be worth having. I'm searching for the right one.for mine. On my 2007 short bed I had the hard top undercover which was nice but in order to haul something in the bed you needed to remove the cover and store it somewhere. Not very practical when you are somewhere besides home and need to haul something.
