Im not a truck owner and wasnt interested in rock crawling. However, I did like the idea off light to moderate offroading and overlanding. I knew very little about portal axles before watching this video, but after watching, I have a greater understanding of how they function and what their purpose is. Listening to him explain the engineering behind the designs, and Mateo choosing great questions to ask, I was geeking out just as much as they were. Absolutely incredible, I am blown away and amazed. Well done, such a sick product and Q&A

I make close to $200k a year and I can’t stomach $20k in a single component. Maybe $10k but if I am going to spend the money I would rather regear the truck then add the supercharge, I would still have a little under $10k to spend on more upgrades. $20k is way over priced! ** I rather go long travel than portals it’s about $20k for long travel and you get a way more comfortable ride.

20k is a lot no matter how you look at it, but it does way more than just add clearance for tires, or clearance under the axle. Its a whole systemic improvement of the vehicle, including the potential for more wheel travel. But nothing will change that 20k is a lot...

Just heard about these portals. Question 1: Can I use my stock Lower Ball Joints or will I need after market for more strength. Question 2: their website says we need to upgrade the housing for the axle. What products do they recommend? Question 3 since it comes with new calipers, can I use the same brake pads or is there a certain size that I need to replace it with. Question4: Do they offer trimming service in the wheel wells? (Planning on getting the LC 250 or 6th gen 4R)

So in the video quinn mentioned that someone could potentially buy 2 portals for the front and then match the rear gear ratio. What would be the recommended gear ratio for the rear if I still have stock 3.73 gears? 1.22 x 3.73=4.55, I was hoping I could save the money of regearing to put towards the portals, but I couldn't find 4.55 gears for 21 tacoma. Or would I have to do the 4.30 in the front and 5.29 in the rear as you mentioned in the video?
@mre312010 ай бұрын
Is ok to run 33 maybe 35 in tiers getting up there in age changing 35 is pretty hard to do solo . From my research haven’t found any cons of system is there any that you know of feed back would really be appreciated. Note running a 22 4Runner off road with a stage 6 icon . Wish I know about portals before lift .

Question. Say I get them on a stock gear Tacoma and later want to add a locker and different gears, what’s the option there? Can I just buy the gears needed or is it best to regear and then buy the portals?
@tacomabeast9 ай бұрын
These already have a re gearing on them so you might not need to do a second re gearing unless you’re going for really big tires
@mikeoxbig0009 ай бұрын
@@tacomabeast thanks for the response. Still learning and trying to understand how portals work, also have been watching all the videos 74 weld has put out and gears are something I know nothing about so I apologize for all the questions. So you add gears to be able to run bigger tires more efficiently, Quinn said that the portals make the transmission think there’s no change basically. Thinking of them as a gear box, I get a 3.91 gear in my stock Tacoma adding the portals I now get a 4.77 gear ratio basically then correct? I think that was what Quinn was saying. I originally wanted to do a 4.88 or 5.29 but I guess in reality there’s no need if I get a 4.77 with the portals. For me it’s a daily driver and weekend toy for now.

The rear would still need to be re-geared. I think it’s worth it if you have a built LT rear on floating axles with disc brakes. If you have LT up front, I think it’s worth it to have portals in the back if you don’t have it built there. Speaking from experience, my issue has been my diff getting hung up in the rear.

Two great options and different price ranges. Make sure you add the re gearing cost on the long travel kit tho
@74weld Жыл бұрын
Dirtking makes great stuff but this is just a different way to lift. Better ride, disc conversion for the rear, regear, full float conversion with 4340 shafts, bigger rotors and brakes front and rear. At the end of the day a LT to a portal is apples to oranges. We sell ride quality and ground clearance. The other guys sell you a lift.
