The only time traction control should be turned of ,is if you're stuck in snow or wet mud..where you have to move backwards and forwards in rapid succession to get out of those situations..Otherwise your traction control should remain in the on postion.As it stabilizes the vehicle during hard stops and sharp turns and in slippery conditions on wet pavements.

Depending on the vehicle there can be up to 8 software programs living in the ABS module. ABS -Prevents any wheel from locking while braking Traction control - reduces engine power when a drive wheel begins to spin Roll over mitigation - if a car is up on 2 wheels (rolling over) it locks up the wheels that are on the ground causing them to lose traction allowing the vehicle to fall back on 4 wheels stability control - corrects oversteer by locking up the rear inside wheel corrects understeer by locking rear outside wheel (or any combination to correct the maneuver) Traction enhancement - some AWD models do not have limited slip differentials, instead they use the ABS module to apply braking to the wheel that is spinning thus giving the effect of limited slip crash detection - will apply brakes if it detects an obstruction ahead drift mitigation - if the car is drifting on a turn it will reduce engine power and engage stability control algorithm trailer sway mitigation - if you have a trailer improperly loaded and it goes into a death wobble (scary situation) ABS will detect this in the steering angle sensor and engage an algorithm to correct it. rollback mitigation - with a manual transmission the brakes will stay applied for a few seconds when taking off on a hill ( so you dont roll back while engaging the clutch

Where did you get the information that traction control only cuts engine power? And where that there is a system specifically called "traction enhancement"?
@christianperspective9527
@christianperspective9527 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarcillaSmith traction control works with other systems within the ABS module, there may be other systems at work within the software that do other things but the traction control part of the system reduces engine power. Different manufacturers with use slightly different specific methods and will use different names for their systems. My example is only one example of how sophisticated it is and how it generally works. These systems are constantly being developed and will change over makes models and model years. You should look up your specific vehicle to get a detailed description of the system operation.

Turn it off if a long upward grade is involved - even a slight grade. Having "Traction Control" drop the engine speed back to zero when you're halfway up the hill does NOT get you to the top! That's a place where controlled wheel spin (controlled by the driver) is more useful than having the "smart" technology stop the vehicle and then try to start up again when halfway up the hill. Been there, done that, on a 200 yard long path uphill through a pasture (hill + wet grass) from an outdoor wedding that didn't quite get rained out. Tried it with TC on twice (2012 Highlander with 6 speed automatic) and TC FAILED MISERABLY both times, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop halfway up the hill. Turned TC off and took yet another clear path up the grade and did fine with me controlling the amount of wheel spin - yes, that's an art, and it's learned from driving manual transmission vehicles on roads covered with black ice. TC might be OK for inexperienced drivers trying to get started on snow/ice - but anyone who needs that kind of help shouldn't be driving an unstoppable vehicle - and they're not experienced enough to know how long that next stop will take.
@ODH3
@ODH3 Жыл бұрын
Nicely done. Two additional comments: 1) Traction control works differently in different vehicles-- the cheapest versions just use your brakes (often only available at lower speeds), while more sophisticated systems moderate power output or power distribution to other wheels. 2) In sports cars, expert drivers can get faster acceleration with Traction control off.

I've definitely had the traction control kick on a few times, usually on wet roads. Having had most of my driving experience without that feature and having had experiences correcting for skids, I must say that I'm glad I have it - esp given that my current car is the first car that I've ever purchased new.

@@PabloGonzalez-hv3td you are right I looked it up - the full name is 'dynamic stability control.' I drive a 2018 Mazda 3, and prior to this car I've only owned used cars that I usually bought when they were about 10 years old or so, so I'm not always up on what is 'normal' on newer cars. I was going with a friend who was shopping for cars and on a 3 year old Nissan versa note they were looking at saw the traction/stability control button and was like, "oh look it has the skid control thingy. That's really good." The dealer gave me a weird look and was like, "year, pretty much all cars have that now."

@@CamdenBloke They've been around since the early 90s but the Stability Management side used to be more common on high power/end vehicles until about the mid 2000s. Traction Control was far more prevalent. I know that in the last decade the systems have been made mandatory in parts of the world. Many systems still allow for the quick disabling of the traction control side without disabling the entire Stability Management aspect. The former only limits wheel spin while the latter can affect steering.

@@PabloGonzalez-hv3td It looks like my 04 cavalier did have that. It definitely wasn't nearly as good as my Mazda. I've never had to corrective steer on my Mazda, but I've felt the automatic correction kick in a few times. I think that I remember a light going on on the dashboard of my cavalier, but I just assumed it was telling me that I *was* slipping. My 95 BMW 315i had rear wheel drive and slid all over if I tried to drive the morning after a heavy snowfall (I used to live in Illinois). I'm pretty sure my 91 Accord didn't have any. All the other cars I've owned were from the 80s.

I have a 2011 Camry LE, I live in a area with some mountains. FWD & Traction control together with good tires gets me home every time. I am on my second set of Goodyear Assurance all season tires. All you have to do is have a slow foot on the pedals and you sorta putt-putt through the rough spots. But when it gets real bad, with FWD you rock the steering wheel back and forth. This allows your tires to bite into the snow. The Camry is a champ ! I love sedans.

Even if you aren’t stuck in the snow but need to traverse deep snow you must have the traction control off. If not the computer will actually apply the brakes while you are trying to increase power to get you through the snow. It feels like the vehicle has actually lost power and there is something wrong with the engine. I’m sure this is the same as when you are in deep mud, sand or experiencing wheel slippage in rough terrain. My experience is in deep snow in Wyoming. That’s why when you lock your 4 wheel drive system into low range, it automatically disables traction control.

Just depends on the make because Land Rover is the opposite in low range it just grabs the spinning wheel and makes the open differential become like a locked differential so that the wheel not spinning gets grip and moves you immediately. It works extremely well and you never want to shut it off it's not even a switch to shut it off. It's pretty famous off-road traction control

Good presentation. It’s worth noting that it’s estimated that most US drivers are not aware of these features in their cars let alone their purpose. The oversteer and understeer terms will draw a blank look from a driver when asked about them. Lastly, without traction between wheels and road surface, also known as tire energy levels, none of these items will work and since Average Joe/Jane pays zero attention to the speedometer, loss of control fatal crashes continue to rise. Driving above 65 mph on any road is the direct cause of fatal crashes specially in other than dry surfaces, with half or less worn tires and brakes. ABS, traction control, stability control features have been standard for many years on vehicles yet the rate of crashes has not diminished. Something to think about before heading out anywhere at 80 mph. Be well.

This info is incorrect, at least for the Tacoma. On my Tacoma disabling the traction control only prevents the computer from attenuating throttle input, stupid stability braking still occurs. This stability control really is horrible on ice, snow, mud or gravel. On a logging road with stability control enabled, with a oversized logging truck bearing down on you, this feature will get you killed. I learned to drive, if I want reduced throttle input, I will take my foot off of the gas pedal. The stability braking simply corrects the vehicle's path of travel via alternating braking input. I learned how to steer a vehicle in a skid during drivers ed. I don't need this extra, unnecessary wear on my brakes. This is only "feature" if you are an incompetent driver.

I will try turning off TRC and see how it goes, maybe this will solve my problem.

I live near the coast and spent a week in the Smoky Mountains a few months ago. I got stuck going up a steep incline in a heavy rain. Got about halfway up the road and started spinning tires. Had no idea why as all week long we got up the hill with no issue (you did have to give it lots of gas to keep your car's momentum going to the top). I was positive that the wet roads wouldn't cause the car to fail so bad. Other cars were going up like it was nothing. I was able to back the car back down the road and back it into a driveway, turn it around and then face downhill to park the car at the bottom of the hill to see what was going on and to change my underwear. Then going downhill the brakes felt really mushy and steering was very stiff. Not cool. Called a tow truck to get me down. Found out by the tow company that having traction control turned ON probably was the main culprit to all of this. He told me to turn it OFF, then try going back up the hill as he followed in case I got stuck again. I turned it off, hit the gas and went right on up with no issue. Much more power to the wheels and no spinning either.

Traction control in most vehicles does more than is explained here. When you find yourself in snow or mud and you are trying to get out and you have wheel spin your system will think you are in an uncontrolled drift and put your engine in "limp mode" in other words put it in idle and kill engine power . I suggest going to your owners manual and or Wikipedia to get a more comprehensive explanation. I had to educate all of our police officers on this feature when it came out, it is very misunderstood, as is ABS (automated braking system) which pulses the brakes to allow you to maintain steering so you can still steer the vehicle without locking up the wheels which will not allow you to steer, then you may be able to steer around the obstacle instead of plowing into it. Most drivers think think ABS will save stop me immediately and it does not.

It's the ABS that really bothers me though. The last time I had it engage was when I was trying to brake on some black ice, very low speeds and I was rolling towards the car in front of me. As I try to brake (and at that speed I wanted the wheels to lock frankly) the ABS was tapping the brakes instead of fully braking like my input was asking for. The result was that I continued towards the truck stopped in front of me - wheels rolling. Thankfully I managed to pull the parking brake in time and that caused the wheels to lock and actually stopped the vehicle before hitting the truck, but if I had allowed the ABS to do it's thing I would have had a fender bender for sure. I can't stress how low speed we're talking here. Literally like 15km/h MAYBE. So for the ABS to prevent wheel lock was just stupid. It wasn't the ice that was gonna cause me to hit the car in front of me (cause I knew the road was slippery and had reduced my speed accordingly), it would have been because of the ABS throwing me a curve ball and deciding for me that I wasn't gonna get full brakes. It's lead me to believe that the driver assists (on my car anyways) are untrustworthy and that I should have em turned off all the time. Since I started turning off the traction control, it seems like I accelerate more immediately, but I could be imagining that I dunno. Is the traction control doing more subtle things that don't cause it to turn the light on? Cause I've seen the light come on when I accelerate from a stop on some ice or dirt or whatever (and felt it override my throttle input and do the tap tap thing - honestly I don't even think it helps much, I'd almost prefer to just get a little bit of wheelspin before finding the traction). And in general these driver assists seem to be an unpredictable factor that doesn't necessarily male driving safer. I can tell when I'm losing traction or when I need to adjust the way I brake to prevent wheelock from causing me to lose control. The way the car reacts to my inputs on any given road condition is predictable and I can make the adjustments I need to so as to maintain control. But when these driver assists engage it's always been jarring and confusing and makes me less able to react - cause now I don't know what throttle or braking is gonna do, cause I don't know what the driver assist computer is thinking or how its gonna interpret my inputs. Much scarier to have your control taken away by the car itself than it is to slide a bit, or lose traction for a bit, or whatever.

ABS utilizes static friction and will always stop shorter than locked wheels. It also allows you to steer while breaking when locked wheels will not.

Dear Frankly. It is completely wrong to lock brakes on ice/snow. The correct technique is to pump the brake pedal. Used to have an office over looking a main road. Was entertaining watching the Southerners experience their first Rocky Mountain winter collision by doing what you wanted to do. Lock brakes and white knuckle to impact.

One thing is for sure. If you are heavy on the gas pedal, and you don't turn off your traction control. It will cost you a rear brake job. Your front brakes do 70% of the stopping. Rear wheel drive vehicles. The front wheel drive tears up the front brakes.

I drive a rear wheel drive car with a V8. I turn off the traction control whenever the roads are slick. Why, you say? Isn't that dangerous? Counterintuitive? In my case it's common sense. Trying to make a left turn from a side street onto a two lane in each direction 45 mph thoroughfare,on a snowy night, I waited for a break. When it came , I proceeded across the two southbound lanes in order to join the northbound traffic. Apparently, my cars computer sensed that I was too heavy on the gas pedal, and cut the power, causing the car to drift slowly across the street with cars approaching quickly. Had it not been for the median separating the north-south lanes, I might have been t-boned on one side or the other. Same problem starting out from a stop when the light turns green. My solution is to switch off the traction control and leave it off. From a standing start in slick conditions, I merely put the car in second gear, and feather the pedal, putting the car in drive when I get rolling. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had to adopt an alternative to the traction control feature.

Ok, I have to comment. Having commuted in the Columbia River gorge for almost 20 years and driving in the snow and ice. I can tell you that traction control can be downright dangerous at times. My commuting partner generally drove Toyota priuses and the first gen Prius was a pain. You couldn't turn off the traction control without jumping through a bunch of hoops. Actually putting it in a service mode, which shut down and disabled the traction control. This is the only way he could make it up the hill to his house in the winter time. On the freeway, the traction control would slow us down to about 35 mph sometimes. It did that on numerous occasions and is a huge safety issue in times when you want to pass a semi truck that is driving 20 mph in slushy snowy conditions. On one occasion, my commuting partner was trying to pass a semi and the semi was throwing slush on the windhield, we needed to pass so we could see the road, but the traction control slowed his prius down to the same speed as what the semi was driving. The car had no power and would not pass the semi. After that, I told him he needed to disable the pos or we were going to be driving my Honda Accord from here on out. His driving style matches mine, so he was in complete agreement. For most people, the computer taking over is fine with them, but for me it is unsafe. I like to be in control of my car, not the other way around..

To my knowledge, Traction control causes excessive wear and tear on front end parts, and its not as nice to drive with it on, as it catches some when taking off from a stop. This is in the case of my own 300hp front wheel drive Chevy Impala. I tend to turn it off everytime I jump in the car, unless it's wet or icy/snowy. Just annoying that it is automatically on every time I start the car.

Been driving for close to 60 years and during that time, I have driven in some of the most treacherous winter conditions imaginable, all without traction control. To me, traction control is nothing but a crutch for those who wont take the time or don't really want to learn how to drive in adverse conditions. So the first thing I do whenever driving in snowy conditions is to turn off the traction control and trust my driving skills.
