Toyotarō: Artstyle Breakdown

FINALLY some toyotaro love. I think his art can use some improvement but people just hound this guy nonstop and don’t appreciate the good.

It is somewhat understandable though. Dragon Ball is a MASSIVE franchise. Dragon Ball is legendary. Toyotaro might be doing quite okay now, but when the manga started for a long time it was pretty apparent how much he can't come up with stuff. He spent most of his art journey replicating Dragon Ball, and he continued to do that even after becoming an official Dragon Ball mangaka. He had a habit of reusing the same poses many, many times. His art IS good, of course, but I think people like to point out the bad stuff mostly because he jumped from being a fan artist to working on his beloved series in a pretty one-of-a-lifetime-chance way, while many artists who develop their own styles and stories spend years being nonames before they are able to get recognition. I'm not exactly saying I agree with all of that myself, just trying to describe what I've noticed the community agreeing on.

@@bloodfinity I know, everyone does it. That's why I'm not agreeing on most of the stuff community says about Toyotaro. It's just that the problem is that he is hardly developing any style on his own and decides to look at the original for reference way more that he should, which at the end of the day results in many pages that seem strangely familiar and uninspired. It's not a crime to take inspiration and reference, but when I see just how much Toyotaro reuses the same poses I just can't not think about it. It's noticeable.

I really appreciate how Toyotarō’s style isn’t just copying Toriyama’s style, but giving it some of his own touches and features that help him distinguish himself as an artist.

Toyotaro is a great artist. I love the way he draws hair, it looks so fluent. And shape of bodies, not being so muscular or hipertrophyed, It is so elegant i think. Great work as always, i love your videos. Nice job

Toyotaro’s approach to gestures and posing could be one of the chief reasons why Toriyama picked him to illustrate the Super manga. You’re very right in saying that there’s a degree of staleness to the posing and composition of modern DB promo art, with only a handful of artists bucking the trend. Part of the reason I’m not a big fan of Toyotarto’s panelling much of the time is that I feel that his strong poses can speak for themselves and say more. That said, his panelling has improved a lot of late, which is very nice to see.

Yeah I only started realising the similarities myself between the two when making this video. The dynamic poses they place their characters in is another similarity they share and one I was going to mention at the start but left out.

Toyotaro is good in my opinion, but i hope he get his own manga or project with his original story because i think it's not good to live under the shadow of toriyama or be refered as the toriyama's copy-cat. I know he loves dragon ball but he needs his own achievements.

Isn't it an achievement to take over the Dragon Ball franchise? It's basically his own right now, look it up, you think Toriyama is doing much? It's a lie to promote the manga and movies, he is barely doing anything, it's mostly Toyotaro doing all the work and coming up with everything. For example, Ultra Ego Vegeta was Toyotaro's design and idea. Okay maybe Toriyama throws a few character designs here and there, but he is definitely not nearly as involved as they think.

Toyotarou's current art consists of my favorite Dragon Ball style. His images have a sense of form in the lines on the hair, the weight of the clothes, and the way muscles interconnect rather than simply shift position that makes it so unique and nice to look at.

I feel Toyotaro art gets way too much hate in the Fandom. Yeah at time some of his stuff are perfect, and he's not quite at the level that Toriyama was, but he's still a very talented artist that's able to emulate his style and is pretty dynamic (There's a reason he was chosen to continue the series in Manga) and recently his art has drastically improved in recent chapters of the Dragon Ball Super Super Manga.

He gets hate because of how he started off. But in most cases, Toyotarou has proven to be a very good artist, his art in chapter 64-67 of DBS was great. His writing in the black goku arc, zen exhibition matches, and u6 tournament was also a lot more enjoyable to me than the Toei versions.

Toyotaro taking cues from nakatsuru and masunaga is what I like to hear, I guess there’s a reason why I’ve always found his art so appealing. The way he draws vegeta in particular I adore, so good

Have you considered talking about the art of Super Dragon Ball Hereos manga? The artstyle may be offputting for most but in action scenes it looks closer to what people are used too despite looking different from what we are used to. An example would be Vegito vs. Cumber in the Universe Mission manga.

I've read both Toriyama's manga and Toyotaro's. I've only read until the part where Goku goes Super Siyan against Frieza though. And I have noticed that with Toyotaro's the action parts look more fast paced and intense. It feels like watching an anime while reading. Toriyama's action parts are good but they are more simplistic and there is less action.

honestly the only real thing i dislike about toyotaro's stuff is mostly the page/panel layouts. everything's pretty cluttered, and there's an abundance of reaction shots. (though lately i think he's improved somewhat) i sorta wish he took toriyama's advice to heart and adopted more of a "less is more" approach also personal pet peeve: i wish he used a lot less greyscale but that's just me

honestly i think he has in a sense taken the 'less is more' quote into picture,to me the goku mastered ui fight vs moro perfectly exemplified that,the paneling ,art,full page spreads,2 page spreads were incredible and compete with toriyama on some level or form in my opinion.

I've read both DB manga and DB Super and I have noticed that in DB Super you can "feel" the action. It looks more fast paced and intense. It feels like you are watching anime. In Toriyama's it's more spimplistic. I prefer Toyotaro's

The only problems that I have with Toyotaro's style is that we doesn't draw the eyes with curves instead using a straight line which I really don't like and that we is not as expressive with faces compared to Toriyama's old artstyle from Z, but overall I really love Toyotaro's artstyle and the fact that his style seems so unique in comparison to Toriyama and find it quite good.

All the characters just need 20 more pounds of muscles. Like at 4:40, I understand that the God form is leaner but Vegeta's fist is way bigger than his damn bicep and his boots look like they'll fall off.

It improved later on, go back to when we first see God Vegeta vs Moro, which I believe was chapter 44 or 45. Vegeta doesn't look as skinny as here.

Toyotaro's art is a bit too "refined" in my opinion, Its VERY good, dont get me wrong but it doesn't give the same smooth feel that Toriyama's earlier works give. I know Toyotaro is his own artist and all and he shouldn't be a DIRECT copy though, just stating my opinion.

It's the line work. Toriyama used to work with a g-pen, so the lines need to be done quickly and with confidence. Toyotaro uses regular ink pens. And also the fact that Toriyama was a God.

I do like Toyotaro's art but it can feel very clogged up and messy. I'm not a fan of the slimmer looking saiyans either, I mean they've been doing crazy training over decades and they've lost muscle mass? I don't really like it. Toriyama seemed to be making the characters more musculer over the DB series and toyotaro seems to have back tracked on that.

In fairness it's more so just Toyotaro following the look set in Toriyama's modern work. Toriyama since the 2000's began drawing characters much slimmer overall. The illustration on the right at 4:30 is a good example :)
