I decided to upgrade myself to the TP-Link M7350 v4 personal wifi device to use on my travels a while back. Is it any good? I'll give you my opinion ... uk.tp-link.com/products/detail... Cheers! AM

Heads Up! In this video I am testing V4 of the M7350 which come with wifi at 2.4Ghz @ 150Mbps and 5Ghz @ 433Mbps, whereas the M7350 V5 currently on sale only comes with a single 2.4Ghz band @ 300Mbps. This is understandably caused me and some others a bit of confusion, especially as TP-Link appear to have removed this feature on the newer version, you can verify this yourself by downloading the spec sheets from TP-Links website. May not be a big deal to you, but if it is important then this is something to look out for! AM

that totally sucks because when travelling in hotels / apartments, there is usually an overload of 2ghz wifi points. loosing the 5ghz option is a deal breaker. now that i have a dual sim phone my tp-link wifi hotspot is redundant. im currently in vietnam and my phone is getting over 70mbs download. none too shabby.

Interesting review. The disadvantage of using an old mobile phone as a wifi access point is that it's a hotspot. When you lose the connection with the hotspot it will stay connected to the internet from your phone and not re-connect to the hotspot. This is what I experienced last year on holiday with our camper.

I think that SD card slot would be really handy, but only if they'd made it a standard size SD, I just bought one of these to use on the boat while in the Norfolk Broads, and being able to share photos from our camera's SD card to various devices to be able to then easily post one or two photos while away from our home PC's would have been a cool feature.

Definitely hoping to use this when I travel to Japan though, the ease of buying a data SIM at the airport and being fairly sure it's going to work with this device is good to know.

Hi. Does it work with a wifi range extender? Thanks!
@G1NZOU2 жыл бұрын
It should, it's just a mobile signal SIM and aerial connected to a wifi router under battery power essentially, so the kind of WiFi network it puts out should absolutely be able to be used with a range extender. Though if you're considering permanent home use, there are some better options for 4G mobile WiFi, ones that have the ability to plug in external aerials and get the best reception and even ones that have an ethernet port.

My advice would be to keep it switched off and use local SIM cards when you go abroad, its usually cheaper. Some exceptions (like in Europe now Europeans are protected by the "Roam like at home" regulations) - getting this wrong can result in some very nasty surprises when you get your bill with all the roaming charges. So I would say, if in doubt, switch it off :) AM

I have an elderly neighbour who has just bought one of these to boost his signal for his phone and has asked me to set up, I’ve done some research but still unclear...would he need to buy and pay for a data sim plan on top of his plan for his phone, or would I be able to run this off his laptop or desktop for example? Any help would be much appreciated.
@AmoebaMan4 жыл бұрын
It's not a signal booster, you put a data sim inside it and it gives you WiFi, it requires its own sim or, if your plan allows it, a second SIM

The battery powered devices I have tried have poor wifi range, (I have only tried a few) - typically not an issue for me as I usually travel solo. If you can't live with this and want a stronger signal then a mains powered router would probably do a better job - D-Link make routers with built in SIM slots although I haven't tested them. TP-Link also make them but as I mention in the video I am not a fan of TP-Link routers due to their poor firmware support. GL! AM

I just found one of these on the train, I guess someone lost it. Do y'all think I can safely use it with my own devices if I insert a new SIM card? Or is it possible that someone modded it and purposely left it on the train, waiting for someone to use it and install some type of virus onto their phone? This may be a stupid question but to be honest, I don't know a lot about electronics so I thought I'd ask. (I know it'd morally be the right thing to give it back to it's owner but even if I brought it to some lost and found station, the chances of the owner actually getting it back are pretty low so I'd rather keep it for myself, than for it to lay around somewhere with no one using it. I know that's probably not the right thing to do but yeah...)

Hi AB, it seems to depend on which version you have, I can understand why this causes confusion. The new version 5 currently on sale appears to have only 2.4 Ghz. The older V4, which I am testing in the video DOES have 5Ghz at 433 Mbps. This is based on the specsheets from TP-Links website, I have no idea whey they changed it. You can verify this yourself by looking at the TP-Link website. So if you have a V4 like mine then you have dual band 2.4 and 5 Ghz. If you havea newer V5 then 2.4 Ghz only, sorry I didn't clarify this in my earlier reply. AM

@AmoebaMan6 жыл бұрын
I don't believe so, the connection speed is reported up to theoretical maximum of 150Mbps (i.e. not LTE Advanced), I think for carrier aggregation you would need to upgrade to a different device like M7650. To be honest given the wifi speed of this device I think the specification and connection speed is fine for a casual user and for the price provided you accept the reliability issues I talk about in my video. If you are a power user or want a more stable device then look elsewhere. AM

You are right it is confusing, the fact that they put "Advanced" in the name is very confusing, but I don't believe it is LTE-Advanced compatible (as I state in the video) - happy to be corrected on this but it is not stated in the specifications whereas it IS on the M7650 for example. AM

@AmoebaMan6 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, I don't see an "always on" or auto power on setting in the GUI, you could jury-rig a longer battery life by powering it from a large USB power bank and then charging this from the car but this is probably not the best solution, a number of tailor made in-car solutions are available which might work better for this. That's not normal, mine charges to 100%. Replacement batteries can be bought very cheaply online (non-OEM). AM

Is this worth it in 2021? | Can i activate or using without connecting to PC (setup)
@AmoebaMan3 жыл бұрын
I think this unit, whilst still functional, is probably not the best value now unless you can find it very cheap. AM

You cannot select what band you wish to work, this is autoselected 800/900/1800/2100/2600MHz :(. Many of times you are on band with lower speed and cannot change. I like huawei devices with custom firmware - in this way I can use DMZ or just IPv6, select band. In hotels scenario I use a MikroTik who can create few virtual AP, connect each one to hotel wifi and summ all into one :) Each reconnect with differ mac and at hotel/airport I can be sure that I have internet as best as possible.
