People might have disagreed with you in 1973. Vietnam war still going on, OPEC embargo causing gas shortages with massive lines at gas stations. Everyone thinks "the world is crazy" all the time. The past always seems better because we don't think about the negatives, we just remember the pleasant aspects. No one in 1973 was thinking "Oh the Price is Right is so great, who cares if I have to wait in line for three hours for gas tomorrow". :)

I was one year old when this first aired and TPIR was standard throughout my childhood. If I got sick and had to miss school, it was ice cream, 7Up and The Price is Right with my mama. Sweet memories! ❤

That's the way these shows worked. Back in the 1950's they advertised cigarettes right on these shows, like What's My Line, where they were smoking up a storm right on stage. Monty Hall with Let's Make a Deal said in interviews where they made money was in advertising small items, like Ragu Spaghetti Sauce or chewing gum. As for cars, the show did have to buy them. The automobile manufacturers don't happen to give the show a new Cadillac just for a spot on the big deal of the day.

It was back in the day. I watched TPIR for the first time in probably fifteen years a few days ago and all they did was show a photo of a cake and said how much does it cost? No brand name, no nothing.

I would take the fridge and the makeup, but you can keep the wicker furniture. It was also popular into the 90s, and it was impossible to clean thoroughly. Dust would always get stuck between the tight weave of the wood, and it drove me crazy. Plus, it was horribly uncomfortable to sit on, even with cushions, and broke down easily. The appliances, on the other hand, were built to last. Our Harvest Gold refrigerator made it well into the late 90s, if not a little longer, before my stepdad finally got rid of it. Makeup was made with quality ingredients, even if the perfumes did have animal byproducts in them. You just can't reproduce castoreum and musk in a lab, and the new iterations of Obsession and the like prove it. I miss the Maybelline Kissing Potions, although those were from the 80s, I think.

That's about $921 in 2024 dollars. Quite expensive for that type of clothes dryer. A clothes dryer that plugs into a regular 115 volt outlet (not gas) probably didn't generate much heat. Laundry probably took hours to dry.

@@roachtoasties actually No, a standard 115 volt dryer would dry a load in about 45 minutes, the heating elements in those 115 volt old dryers could and would often melt the nylon and polyester clothes popular the time. As far as being expensive, YES they were expensive and thus most American households had Clotheslines, cause a clothesline and clothespins were cheap why use electricity when the sun would do the job for you.

My two favorite hosts of all time are Bob Barker and Alex Trebek. It's funny how both of them were very "game show hosty" the first few seasons of The Price is Right and Jeopardy!, respectively. Overly enthusiastic, very high energy, bombastic. Once they got a little more personality, toned things down a little bit and added their own unique touches to hosting, that's when they became the hosting legends they are today. Bob was always a great host, but sometimes these early seasons of the The Price is Right are a tad hard to watch as he just comes off as stereotypical game show host and nothing more.

Totally agree. Bob's first season of TPIR offers a lot of cringe-worthy sequences from him. He wasn't a game show host rookie, though, as he hosted Truth or Consequences from 1955 until he got the TPIR job after Dennis James withdrew from consideration.

It's called a ringer...... My uncle was a security guard at Studio City back in the mid 70's to the mid 90's and he was on EVERY game show atleast twice during that time. Every time they had someone winning too much they would bring someone in that worked for the studio in the background like security or in the offices or backstage to come in give them the answer/work the game and beat them but iof course they got to keep the prizes but they were paid VERY well to do it.

In regards to the clip's title, no, I simply cannot believe it! The lightning speed of 5 minutes where we sit through the description of the above-ground pool and the HIGHER/LOWER prizes was so stunningly quick, I don't know how they weren't tempted to squeeze in another two pricing games! It must've been at least 8 seconds faster than a normal Bonus Game playing! ba-zOoM! 🌩
