Not too worried about the CBs if Ohio State can stop the run, which they should do. Ohio State hasn't allowed a passing TD since Oregon
@BulletProofSoul10294 күн бұрын
Knowles and Walton already made adjustments from the Oregon game in the way the play pass defense and man coverage. You can see it in his they defended Penn State by mixing zone with man and also having the defenders defend route concepts instead of just standing in space during zone coverage. Ross Fulton did a great analysis on those changes after the Penn State game. The issue is they haven't gone to those coverages the last 2 weeks because of some experimentation with the defense as far as blitzes and rotation and honestly, they probably underestimated NW to a degree. Try to take in the whole picture before freaking out.

Bill mentioned the DB strategy: for whatever reason the face guarding, play the WR’s hands approach has been there for about a decade now (at least since Kerry Coombs). On the one hand it’s been hard to complain because Coombs especially pumped out 1st Rounder after 1st Rounder, and players who are still some of the best in the NFL like Denzel Ward and Marshon Lattimore. On the other it can be incredibly frustrating to watch when you see ball after ball that look like they could be intercepted/knocked down if the DBs just turned their heads. I was really hoping Walton would put in a more aggressive strategy ala the forward-facing DB approach the way Alabama has always coached. But I just don’t see that happening Bill.

The corners seem to have good coverage the majority of the time, but they always look surprised when QBs throw into tight windows-especially on fade routes. Perhaps the adjustment is to just expect the ball to be thrown in your direction on EVERY play? 🤷🏾♂ Go BUCKS! 🅾🌰🏈

In my humble opinion, this defense is not staffed for a 4-2-5 approach. The nickel makes sense on 3rd down but a straight 4-3 on 1,2 downs is just more reliable for run stopping and generating a pass rush without blitzing constantly.
@chrislane32284 күн бұрын
Well... if they ran a 4-3 set, who are the starting LBs? In the end, which LBs get the most time? I liked your comment. I just see the LBs and their depth, and I see a defense that IS staffed for a 4-2-5 set. The secondary is pretty tough.
@steveparish42094 күн бұрын
@@chrislane3228 Doesn't matter to me who but a rotation of Simon, Hicks, Styles and Reese is enough to keep 3 guys on the field on 1,2 downs. I'm just a believer that 5 DBs on the field isn't an effective way to make QBs nervous. The DBs play way to far off the ball and watching the defense get gashed on runs between the tackles and short passes is frustrating to watch. The results are generally overall great with limiting scores. But if you keep allowing teams to get in the red zone, it's just a matter of time before that breaks down. And running QBs are even scarier. I'm a front 7 guy, just how I'm wired.
@chrislane32284 күн бұрын
I'm with you. We have James Laurinaitis now. I want 3 LBs also. I just don't know how Knowles would handle that. Reese, Hicks, Styles, Simon, Powers.... I just wonder if we really have that mean tackling MLB that we would need to run a 4-3 more often.

Maybe if the Dline can’t get to the QB on a specific play that they break out a rarely used tool they have and that is get their big paws up and maybe tip a pass off intended course or at the very least make it more difficult for QB to throw on target.

Honestly I think everyone is still overreacting still. There’s just something that’s wrong with the coaching. The guys are in position to make a play on the player or ball almost every time they get “beat”. They’re just picking the wrong time to play the hands or to play the ball. Sometimes they get caught up trying to make a play on the ball instead of just playing the through the defender and they whiff and give the receiver the ball or vice-versa. Just need to start driving through the player as he gets the ball on these sideline catches that way if he does hold on he’s out of bounds. Start making them nervous to go up for the ball without getting hit. You do it early in the game that way if you get there a bit early and they flag it it’s not at a time where it’s going to cost you. Just like in court, you can say something a jury shouldn’t hear and the judge can strike the comment and tell the jury to disregard it but they still heard it. You can get flagged for a play but they still feel/fear it.
