One year ago, I won this car........soooooo blessed! What a game, what a day! Like Drew said "That was a good win", and I owe it to my God for providing a car when we needed it most. If you notice, I'm watching the numbers my husband holds up everytime. One of those times he held up a six and then changed it to an eight, if I had seen the change I would not have won the car. Pretty crazy!

That's the problem in this game, people think you need to get the price exactly right on the first shot. Instead, you want to get as MANY shots as possible. If I were to play this game, I would purposefully choose the "4" for the first number, knowing it would be wrong and hoping I'd get at least one of the remaining 4 numbers right. Then I'd choose the 2 for the first number and get at least one more shot after that - thereby increasing my chances of getting the last number right.
@Fexghadi10 жыл бұрын
And then you'd fail every other number and look like a total dumbass for the rest of your life on the interwebz :p
@notcyndi9 жыл бұрын
cicholdebannan I just left a similar comment, but in fact, another way of doing it which is just as good actually to say "2" for the first digit on the first guess, but to deliberately try to miss on all the other digits. So really her mistake wasn't simply using the 2 on the first digit on the first guess, it was guessing "22000 something" on her first guess, which are the most likely candidates for both of the first 2 digits, it would have been just as good to guess "28" for the first 2 digits as "42". So the stupid thing she did wasn't simply to guess 2 for the first digit, it was both things combined, 22 for the first 2. That's just a waste.
@JustinEvitable807 жыл бұрын
cicholdebannan, you are mostly correct. You want to get as much guesses as possible. But you never know if you are going to get one of the five correct. Only the first number is obvious. The second number isn't too hard but you'll get a second chance anyway since you'll get the first number correct. You need as much guesses as possible for the fourth and fifth numbers.
@MurasakiBunny7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, aiming to get just 1 number right and the rest wrong helps increase your odds each turn.
@DanaThoughts7 жыл бұрын
Everybody commenting here at minimum understands basic probability and that have to increase your propensity for having more guesses, and increase your odds for winning the car. I don't understand why pretty much every person who plays this game can't figure out this basic strategy.

It might be safer to get the first number right (it's usually very obvious) and botch the second number (which, depending on the options, can also be easy to figure out) with your first guess. For example, I would have started off with $29,xxx.
@donaldlevin8007 жыл бұрын
I would miss the second number on purpose because you know it's not a $40,000 car. I watch this show all the time, and most of the people don't do this kind of strategy. It gives you one extra pick to play with.

@notcyndi9 жыл бұрын
If she was SMART, she would have chosen 4 for the first digit on the first guess - deliberately getting it wrong - because she's very likely to get one of the others, likely the second digit, right, on the first guess, and overall, it increases her chances to do this. You don't want to be right about TWO at the same time, you want to be right about just one digit if possible, so you get the maximum number of guesses possible. Then only use the 2 on the second guess, and try to pick things that you think are wrong for the other digits. But maybe she did something similar, at least trying to get wrong answers for every other digit on the first guess, which would be a strategy about as good, and just failing at that.
@MobileTaz9 жыл бұрын
uh no that's NOT smart, because the first number is the only one you're pretty much guaranteed to get RIGHT. I've seen this played COUNTLESS times where the first number is the only one they got on the first shot.
@EricEbac229 жыл бұрын
+MobileTaz There was actually a contestant during season 36 (on one of the very first playings of Cover-up that season) who got every number except the first one correct on the first try, then all she had to do on her second attempt was cover up the first number she chose (3) with the actual first number (1).
@JustWasted3HoursHere7 жыл бұрын
I agree: Choose that first number (should be a win if you're not an idiot) and then choose the rest of the numbers that you _think_ are probably not correct - but MIGHT be: You're sure to go on to the next step. After that, it does get statistically more difficult, but as long as you happen upon at least one right one, your odds will increase that you will guess another correct number. JW3HH

One thing on this game is as he phrases, "as long as you have at least one number right you keep going." If it's obvious of what the first two numbers are going to be choose only one of them and purposely get the other wrong that way you get at least 3 chances instead of 2.
@bigmattman200510 жыл бұрын
cody bosch Right, it seems like it's that easy until you end up getting both wrong. The only one that was obvious was the first number, because there is no way that car is worth over 40k. You would have to be a car expert that knows every single model vehicle and their average retail price. Then the car expert would know what the first two numbers are. Even after that, he/she would be in the same boat as everyone else just guessing at what the last 3 would be. Additionally, if you've watched other cover up game plays, you would know that there are times when the second number has adjacent numbers, like a 2 and a 3.

@straightpipediesel5 жыл бұрын
Back then 450 minutes a month plus 2 GB was $30+$20=$50. $50 x 12 = $600, leaving $740 for the phone. There usually was a $300 subsidy with contract, so out the door the phone cost $440, which is about right as I recall.

I'm not a fan of +$1 either but it's part of the game now, at least in contestants row. Even in the day Bob said it was smart strategy to bid +$1. There aren't a lot of great chances to bid last. That's because Drew disliked the numbers (be kept telling the crew to put blank spaces [they wouldn't listen]); on Day 3 of TPIR's Decades Week (season 44), the symbols represented Pricing Games that were retired in the 1990's: Super Saver, Bump, Gallery Game, Split Decision, and Super Ball. Cover Up debuted in 1993.

The correct first move of this game is to get the first number right, but deliberately try to get the other numbers wrong, e.g. 29-something. Then try again to get to second number right and the other numbers wrong, e.g. 22-something. That should give you the best chances to win the game.

The strategy of this game is to not guess all the obvious numbers on the very first try to allow yourself more chances at guessing the last numbers. For example, the car is obviously not 40 thousand dollars, and a small Hyundai Sonata would only make sense to cost $22000. $28000 is way too much, and $40000 is just stupid. So you would start your guess off with either 42000 or 28000. It's obviously wrong, but it will allow you to take an extra guess on the remaining three numbers.

only by totally random chance. the first number is rarely not a giveaway, and usually the choices for the second number are friendly. In the days when prices often ended in 95 they were even easier. But your best odds are if you don't try to hit the home run on round one. For the same reasons the win rate on Lucky 7 is about 30%, instead of the 1 in 10,000 chance of a random guess losing no dollars.

Indeed; there were actually two contestants during season 36 who made this game a duck walk almost like this. The first one was on the game's first playing of that season when a contestant got all but the first number right on the first try (she had $35,915), then covered up the first number she had (3) with a 1 and made it right. The second win a few weeks later came when a contestant got a 2, 3, and 0 (the first, middle, and last number) correct on the first try, then got a 2 right on the second try (the fourth number), then all she had to do was cover up the six she had with a one.
