These are solid well built amplifiers. Far superior to MFJ for example. They are Class C designs so they're only suited for FM operation. And the newer variants are pretty easy to tune or dial in for whatever frequency you intend on using or just tuning it to 146 flat for 2m needs. The older units with TRW stud mount style final outputs are trickier to dial in due to their variable stripline and filter etc. But even the older "mobile" TPL amps be it VHF/UHF are great for Amateur radio service especially if you can Get Down when in the shack! The last few new hams I met didn't know how to install their 2m mobile rig or tune their magmount. Alot has changed since 1999 when I tested at Dayton.. and even more since 1949 ;)

Does the fan always run when powered on, or does it power on when the unit gets hot.

When it gets hot. There is a thermal switch mounted to the heatsink.
