The plants I grew from TPS (true potato seed) didn't do so great this year. Most of this was my fault (planting time and area). Today we take a look at my mini harvest from TPS.

The TPS plants that you gave me never made it into the ground (due to our vole problems) but did produce about the same amount of large potatoes by growing in containers on my front porch. I did get a few handfuls of smaller ones. I’m saving them and will plant them in the 30 gallon planter bags next season.

That's awesome! I forgot I had given you some when you were here. I'm so glad you got them to produce for you and can perpetuate them next season.

G'day Mate , loved the video , just stick with it sorry i didnt catch this earlier , its been a long harvest here and just catching up now a lady here in Oz got me onto TPS some 10 years ago , they are a 2-3 season experiment , they take way too long to get going and set back easy as you saw , so after 1st season i just clear away debris and let the little ( generally ) tubures do their thing , see how they turn out in a regular season , size taste etc , work out if its viable grow again from the biggest and best tuber to get a real view of what to expect from it , and make the call yea or ney , and NEXT! ;) ... i got into it trying to create a desert compatible tater , i had 100+ tries over the ten years and have had 2 success's that out do commercial breeds in low water area's using TPS and made some brilliant taters that just liked a bit more water than i was after its very interesting to get into the lady has a variety of mixed colour flesh ( blue/purple and cream white ) called Nelly thats been a popular received tater , i have some growing here and will do so onwards , beautiful nutty flavour folks can play with TPS to solve their needs too , i know folks who are looking for strains that are cool weather over winterable types, but it takes more than one grow to gauge how successful you have been , i've a La Ratte and desert rose TPS variety , not huge but they grow hundreds of tubers , it can bulge out a pot to over flow but first 2 years it looked like a few peanuts

Nice! Thanks so much for all that information! I still have a ton of seeds left, so I'm going to start a new batch this year, since I made some mistakes with the ones I did this past season. I like that the seeds are viable for so long so it gives you more chances to work with them. That's great you have come up with some new varieties that worked for you!

Awesome, I'm definitely doing it again, but planting in a better spot and starting later so they don't grow so much in my basement and go through so much transplant shock. Let me know how your crop goes!

This was a great experiment!! I plant my potatoes in an old mound of horse manure, which also contains old hay and wood shavings. The manure pile is over 25 years old and I no longer have horses, so no more fresh manure is being added to it as of 2 years ago. What I have found fascinating is that potatoes come back on their own every year from the seed potatoes and any potatoes I missed. I live in SE Wisconsin and it gets very cold in winter here (Zone 5a) I’m hoping eventually I won’t have to plant potatoes anymore, but this may be just wishful thinking. The potatoes I harvest from the seed potatoes range in size from are bigger than the ones you dug up (like a regular potato size) to about the size of the larger ones you dug up. I find that the smaller ones are great for soups and stews, so they don’t go to waste. On another note, I just put all the artichokes I have grown this year, for the first time, to bed for the winter. I’m so hoping they come back next year, fingers crossed. They are also planted in the old manure pile. I’m hoping the flower heads get bigger. I only had about 5 heads that got big enough to actually harvest and eat- they were delicious!! The rest I just let go to flower and the hummingbirds and insects loved them. Do you know if the flower heads get bigger the second year?

That's great you have that manure pile to work with! I have found that potatoes come back too. I had one that I missed last year and a plant popped up in one of my raised beds this year and I got 9lbs of good sized potatoes off it. So you never know. You might not have to plant them again if you leave a few :) As for the artichoke flowers, I don't know. Due to an early pruning and late warm up and then freeze, mine didn't make it through to the next season, so that is another thing I need to start over again. Every year there are successes and learning experiments :)
