This is gold for me. I imagine that it would be pretty cool if mayan descendants started claiming others pieces of the culture, such as the jade, turquoise, shell bracelets and earrings and the crazy hairstyles.

Yes it will be cool. I'm a male who learn how to backstrap weaving. I learned it from my mother a grandmother to keep the art alive. I started to use jade and feathers in the weaving. And trying to revive an old style of a big long guipil. The even tho my people don't weave it anymore. But they use commercial fabric because it's cheap to use. But I'm going to start weaving one and doing the design all on the backstrap loom. There is a 3 braid technique that is used when weaving. It's not going to be easy. But it will be worth it

@@tlaloc27 I'm going to start one. I've always been shy. But thinking about it, I need to. If one day I have to leave this life. Then all that I learn and worked hard to gain will be lost. I know it will be hard to document all that I know, And doing it by myself. It's going to be a mess, but eventually is will work

@@scs91 I will do.. it's was forbidden to weave the style because it didn't fit the religious views of the Spanish. 1: before weaving you have to fast for one day and pray for patience and wisdom. Because the loom represents our umbilical cord. The tree or post is the ya' aax( maya cross or the tree of life) and the weaver weaves the unseen into existence. And looking from the outside it's a womb. 2: the red dye used came from a mixed of a animals blood and a red root from a plant and a one more plant. To make a red dye that doesn't fade like the maya blue. As you can see, why the religious Spanish didn't agree with it. So some where punished etc. But my grandparents said that our ancestors kept doing it in sercert. Not letting go. But if we do, we spit out our mothers milk and trample on our fathers blood.

Several years ago, while in Sevilla, Spain, I noticed some Romani women in blouses similar to the huipils I saw in Guatemala. Is there a connection? I have always wondered.

I wish my people could wake up from their trama. A terrible shame that we rever our abusers and ignore good people who are trying to help us. Time and time again asian peoples have risen to educate us and help us and it goes underappreciated or underrepresented. Things need to change.
