Trabant Commercials with english subs (part 1)
Wikipedia:
The Trabant (/trəˈbɑːnt/; German pronunciation: [tʀaˈbant]) is an automobile produced from 1957 to 1990 by former East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau in Zwickau, Saxony.
It is often regarded as a symbol of the defunct East Germany and of the collapse of the Eastern Bloc in general. The car had a reputation for being uncomfortable, slow, noisy, and dirty. Nevertheless, it was very sought after in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. It had a hard plastic body mounted to a single-piece steel chassis (a so-called unibody or monocoque), front-wheel drive, a transversely-mounted engine, and independent suspension -- all features that were unusual for the era in which it was manufactured.
Dubbed a "spark plug with a roof", 3,096,999 examples of various models of the Trabant were produced over nearly 30 years with few significant changes to its basic design.[3] Older models of the car later became popular among collectors in the United States due to their low cost and fewer restrictions on importing antique cars. The Trabant also gained a following among car tuning enthusiasts and for use in rally racing and other motorsports.

When you advertise a specific car and every other car around it is the same in the advert. Definitely makes it seem unique!

Only in East Germany would a Trabant 601 be called fast and powerful in an advertisement. Especially when this car has a 26 horsepower 2 cylinder 2 stroke engine, it would be amazing to get this car up to a speed of 100 kilometers per hour or 62 miles per hour on level ground.

David I suggest you are looking through modern or at least 1989 (year of reunification) eyes. In the 1950s the Trabant gave nearly all that a VW Beetle did but for a lot less. Much like the Beetle it came from a pre WWII design but unlike the Beetle it was not the offspring of state intervention but a sort of bastard son of the DKW two stoke cars en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DKW with an elder brother of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWZ_P70_Zwickau All the Allies were going to deindustrialise Germany after WWII. Fortunately for VW cold hard facts met a need for vehicles for the British Army of occupation. Russia was much more aggressive in its deindustrialisation. That said if you look at late 50s early 60s Trabants people in Britain had cars that were not any better or only marginally better for much more input. Look at the early P50 Universal or even better the AWZ P70 Estate and would you be choosing one of these or Citroën 2CV? Hell BMW and other West German manufacturers were producing damned bubble cars at the time. They just never developed it e.g. If they had developed the DKW two-stroke V4 that SAAB used as a base for their own engine with the all four speed freewheeling gearbox they would have had a much better performing car, but they didn't. No competition and the Trabant might have become something that wasn't desired, but it did service a need.

It easily makes 100 kph, not the quickest accel though. About 15s to 80 and about the same from 80 to 100. Anyway, not bad for 26hp, compared with same era small cars it would easily get away from a 2CV or 500 and can quite keep up with a Beetle, no chance to a Mini though.
