Ooh I absolutely agree! I love that there is always a surprise and the element of unpredictability means we can let go of perfectionism a bit 💛

I love monotypes. Recently found a jar of Akua black Intaglio ink sitting in my stash. So I am playing about doing trace monotypes with it on a piece of Mylar as my printing surface. The only thing I need to rectify is that less is more. So apply a thinner layer of ink and roll it out really even and that should give me a good impression. Right now even without any pressure my paper picks up a massive load of ink.

It is certainly a trial and error learning curve, but it is so good when you start hitting on the results you want! Different inks and surfaces all seem to offer different experiences too. It sounds like a good plan to try and keep the ink as thin as you can - perhaps it’s worth experimenting with a different kind of paper too… maybe something thicker would hold itself on the surface differently? I love it when a long forgotten material gets re-found in the stash though - I’m so glad you are having fun playing with the process 👏

It’s the black will be white and white will be black that gets to me. I once started carving a linotype and half way through I started carving the wrong bits.

Linocut is a doozy for that! I always have to colour in the block to make sure I remember which bits are which 😂

Greetings, Gemma… Though I enjoyed your upbeat and unpretentious approach to making monotypes, I do have one issue with this video : The truly ghastly, distracting “music” in the background, fighting for my attention with your voice in the foreground! This is the first video by you that I’ve seen, so I don’t know if you’ve made this rookie mistake before, but I truly hope not… If you have used that obnoxious noise in other videos, it may mean that I will not be able to view them, for fear of being driven to distraction, and off of your channel.

Hello! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your thoughts. I’m sorry to hear the music on this video was unenjoyable for you - I will say that I am truly learning as I go on this channel, trying things out to see what works as being helpful but also upbeat. I don’t always get it right, and it’s only when people reach out with a comment that I get to hear what I may need to think about for future videos. I do like to experiment with different types of music, but in more recent videos I have been leaving more quiet moments when talking. The more I learn, the more I am (hopefully) getting the balance right. I hope you won’t be put off trying out my other videos, especially the more recent ones, but I understand if they are not for you. Thanks for stopping by and reaching out, it’s really appreciated 💛

@@GemmaThePen: My sincere apology for not replying to your very thoughtful response five days ago! (I’ve been struggling with some health issues and sleeping through some days.) I was very impressed by your reply, and how honest and open you are. I will be going back to your channel to look at the most recent videos… Please take care and stay cool!
