RT student here. One other thing you can use the regular dressings for is to clean the back of the patient's neck. They'll absolutely love you for it!

This was the best and easiest demonstration I've seen this was very helpful I'm a PCT I'm working through a travel agency and I have to specialize in cleaning treache in which I have no experience due to the fact pct/cna didn't clean nor suction treachea patients at my previous job

I want to ask is why did you touch the dressing both hands if one of your hands is not sterile... are we suppose to put new gloves on so that it would be all sterile? The dressing is sterile right?

Anyone have experience with the Passy Muir Speaking Valve? After a few short months my 77-year-old sister is hardly able to use it anymore because it irritates her throat. Sad. Could this have been due to treatment shortcomings? Such as insufficient humidification or suctioning. Or is this to be expected with frequent use over a few months? I really miss our phone calls.

They do tend to get a little smelly but with regular cleaning it shouldn't be too bad. If its foul smelling you should tell her doctor.

@@charli-gracedavis6116 …Well as a practicing respiratory care practitioner of 46yrs that’s what we still do! We still clean it with peroxide and rinse it with sterile water or normal saline… All healthcare team has its skill set it brings to the team I would never not use peroxide in cleaning the inner cannula! Peroxide use of the inner cannula is the proper way still since knowing mucous and plugs are in the cannula it’s important it’s cleaned properly and kept sterile. And when I’m teaching nursing that haven’t worked with tracheas much or it’s been a long time I teach them the proper way. Our patients benefit from it which is of course is always the goal!

You are doing trach care on a Portex trach ... the inner cannula is disposable. Cleaning and reusing inner cannuli is no longer best practice. This practice is discouraged.
