Tracheostomy Suctioning- Nursing Skills:
In this video we’re going to talk about suctioning a tracheostomy. You may need to do this before you do trach care or just because the patient requires suctioning. Make sure that you assess the patient before you start so that you know what their one sounds are, and what their oxygen saturation is. We love you guys! Go out and be your best selves today! And, as always, happy nursing!

Love the moment she doesn't see the water box, and just get flustered, that's nursing personified. 😀

How can you tell if the suctioning tube is inserted too deep and is it causing more damage than good results?

Why in this skill are you not using hyperoxygenation for this patient? In our skills we have to use oxygen between each pass. Is this more similar to real life practice?

In the audio she mentioned about the source of O2 to place back in between the suctioning procedure, IF REQUIRED. During the suctioning it's not mandatory to place O2 back to the patient in between the procedure until and unless indicated. Each suction should not exceed more than 10 sec. Hyperoxygenate the patient prior and immediately after the suctioning.

Hyperoxegenation is old fashioned and proved to be more harmful due to the free radical damage and other metabolic issues. Aim to keep saturations within the target and only supplement oxygen if required.

it would be nice to see everything more up close. can’t see anything she’s doing because 3/4 of the screen are taken up by the mannequin and random hospital equipment, cant see how she sets her stuff up

How does the patient breathe during this procedure if he is 100% dependent on the ventilator for breathing?

Hyperoxygenate prior to suctioning. Limit each pass to no more than 10 seconds. If the pt desaturates to say low 80s, withdraw the catheter and huperoxygenate. If the pt is oxygen sensitive hyperoxygenate in btn each pass of suctioning. Do not do more than 3 passes in 1 minute

Should the patient not be fully supine ? Keeping patient propped up can increase the risk of damaging the alveolie

You should throw the suction catheter together with the disposable gloves. Instead, you touched your stethoscope with your gloves on.
