I think that was what initially attracted me to the game when I saw the back of the box was that "oh, this looks like Castlevania all over again and its more about the book/movie? Yeah I'll get this." And I had just got into the Castlevania games around the same time as well so the timing was perfect for me at that point. I still thoroughly enjoy it and play it a couple times or so every year, usually around Halloween most fittingly lol! Still a favorite over 20+ yrs later!

If you turned Quincey Morris (protagonist Bram Stoker's novel and Francis Ford Coppola's movie) into Belmont-like vampire hunter like his son John, and added Castlevania music, you would have this game as the missing prequel to Castlevania Bloodlines.

I was lucky and got Castlevania 4 first when I was 8yrs old, then I would hedge a bet and say that I got this game not too long afterwards..probably 6 months or so. Which happened to line up nicely with my then-recent discoveries of the Bram Stoker novel and the Crestwood House Monster books at my school library which covered the Universal Monsters and a good portion of the Hammer Horror films as well. So needless to say, getting this game at the time I did was like the stars aligning and helped contribute to kickstarting a lifelong interest/fandom of the old B&W and early technicolor Gothic horror movies and its source literature. Golden memories for sure, even if specific details now are a touch hazy and sepia-toned lol!

@happyspaceinvader5083 жыл бұрын
At the time, I hated this game because of its tenuous connection to the movie... but looking back now, Matt Furniss’s music (if not always appropriate to the gameplay) was brilliantly written and made incredible use of the Genesis soundchip. Gameplay wise... it’s fiddly in a similar way to Shadow of the Beast... but not quite as awful. If you can forget about the movie license it’s not that bad.
@RentalRewindGaming3 жыл бұрын
I have always really enjoyed the game. I totally agree that the music is really quite good, and fitting too in spots. The control, well rather solid, is a bit stiff with the jumping and such in some spots but its the only fault I can find with it off the top of my head so to speak.

@@RentalRewindGaming Sadly, the SNES version has a MUCH worse soundtrack that doesn't sound very impressive at all and it shows that the Psygnosis games often fared better on Sega Genesis than the SNES.

Personally I loved this game, it's good considering it is a 90's movie based game. The sound track was stellar and the creepiness factor was on point. It was hard, until you figured out the correct strategy for each stage. The pikes that shot down at you twards the end of the game were the worst hardship in the game, because there was no way to time avoiding them right.

@RentalRewindGaming2 жыл бұрын
A pretty loose adaptation for sure. Dracula's Castle is not too bad for accuracy's sake (minus the foggy dungeon level), being chased by the Vampire Wives was a good bit and rather stressful as a kid too I will add. The middle portion of the game does take considerable liberty with it's source material and the last portion of the game in the Sanitarium and Carfax Abbey wasn't so bad. Having the final boss of the game as the Armored Dracula from the beginning of the movie though made no sense and it was a very disappointing final boss as well unfortunately.

@randypeppercorn18654 жыл бұрын
Strong theory, very possible.😆 The greying is why I suggested a yarmulke, as it looks like he has grey hair, but there's that odd black patch on top. But perhaps they were trying to show salt and pepper grey, or even the contour of Keanu's hairstyle...? Perhaps...we'll never know for sure 😅

"Based"... very very loosely indeed. This is such a bizarre game... I think this is one of those movie license made before the film's release, with the developers thrown a couple of photos as inspiration. The levels don't look like anything from the film, and then there's the odd use of various characters as end-level bosses. Why is Jonathan Harker wandering around slashing at giant tarantulas with Strider Hiryu's light sword? Why is Renfield so freakishly tall? Why do all the boss characters make the same irritating sampled chuckle/laugh? The music is often really inappropriate (funky synth pop leftovers from Puggsy) and nothing at all like the film. In fact, I think only the intro sequence uses music from the film. I didn't really find it much fun to play - too many "leaps of faith", being spammed by enemies, etc. is lazy game design. Collision detection is poor. Like someone else said here... it's a poor man's Castlvania. What's strangest is that this came from Psygnosis, who produced some really good games for the Megadrive/Genesis. Perhaps they made this one on the day they all decided to drop some acid? However, of course I'm giving this video a thumbs up because even bad games are a part of video game history, and I particularly applaud walkthroughs that don't have some irritating voice over!
