My dad passed while hunting Kentucky late muzzleloading season last year (Dec 2022). He passed in the woods I grew up hunting, he had an aneurysm. Brother found him when he didn’t call to give his evening hunt report as he always did. Mom passed while I was hunting the ‘22 bow opener on the morning of Sept 3. I’ll be doing a lot of talkin to them this season. Something strange that happened on the bow opener, I got off a Nightshift at 0600, got home and changed and hit the woods, tracking a doe I shot, a hummingbird suddenly appeared while I was tracking, I’d never saw a hummingbird there, so I got out my phone to video it to show my wife and kids. An hour later I went in the house and my nephew called and told me mom passed earlier that morning. Miss them both. Those of you that still have mom and dad, please tell them in some way u love em. You never know when the time will come that they won’t be there to share your hunts and stories. ❤Cryin like a little girl now. Thanks for the hunt sir.

Great deer! Happy for you. Growin up in Addison County Vermont I hunted like that for years and loved it. I moved down south where the gun season is 4 months long. There is still nothing in this world like dogging one on snow, in the cold, over the mountains and getting the better of one. Nobody here understands that. Those 15 days in November were the best part about living there and this really took me back.

@@JasonSmith-bv3yd Means a lot to me! Thanks for tagging along for the ride. My brother and I have vowed to always stay true to who we are and why we do what we do! PA has some great hunting from what I’ve heard, as long as you can get away from the heavily pressured areas! The big woods are a special place… it’s awesome feeling like you’re the only person for miles and miles. Still hunting with a crossbow sounds like a fun challenge! And muzzleloader will be fun in the late season if you guys get some snow! Enjoy the hunts and memories made.

Congrats...I lost my dad when I was 19 in 2004 and I've had the same talk while walking the woods/rivers and I know he's walking every step of the way... It does get better over time and staying in the hunt keeps the emptiness from creeping in... My two boys are my focus and showing them how my dad taught me is so wonderful to pass down onto them... Just think about how many people watch your videos trying to learn the art of tracking/still hunting all of them are learning from what you where taught from your father and I believe that's a legacy that will never be forgotten by so many wanting to just simply learn.... Keep the knowledge moving, and may the mentors never die.

Thank you so much Norman!.... I've been mulling over how to respond to this comment in the best way possible. First off, you won't believe this... but my Dad's name was Norman! Very chilling that you commented such a meaningful comment like you did. I just want to let you know that the comment means the world to me and I truly appreciate you taking the time to craft such a heartfelt, personal response. My great grandfather, grandfathers, and father all passed down their VT mountain hunting genes and skills to my brother and I. You are absolutely right that they are right there with us every step of the way. Every deer I am fortunate enough to take brings me closer to them each time. I feel my Dad's presence and know that he is guiding me on my hunts... making him and my grandfathers proud! I hope to one day continue passing on the legacy just like you mentioned. Again, thanks for the comment... I really appreciate it!

Thats big woods hunting in potter county as well as tioga . Im not far from there in lackawanna county and hunted in Susquehanna, Wayne , Wyoming , Luzerne , Tioga , Bradford , Pike and Lackawanna along with Gentry county MO for 25 yrs . Nuthing Better then hinting Big woods in Pa . Some started calling buck here “ pa mtn buck “ which doesnt do our buck in pa justice . So if i may and you as well to eventually prefer to call them “ Pa or Pennsylvania big woods buck “ and also put a big in the ears of many to pass on 3 on one side buck and let our youth harvest them . I believe that an 18 yr old should not be allowed to harvest anything below a viewable 8 point buck at least it the ears wide . Y bucks spikes 3 on one side plus larger to be harvested by disabled veterans , disabled , physically challenged youth to senior can harvest any buck of choice and for all to be able to have their pa hunting license be either buck or doe ( no yearlings ) and purchase the allowed amount of doe permits but the permits should be a specific amount per individual county . Whether 1 or 5 other then the regular license . I think it’s time to step up the rules since the Gary Alt phase . It’s been 20 yrs + since then . Safe hunting sir . Pa proud

Thank you! I’ve heard great things about the mountains of VA/WV. I’m sure you enjoy it. And you’re definitely right about it being a dying art! There’s a solid group of hunters in the northeastern states that still hunt the traditional way, using traditional gear and clothing… helping to keep our heritage and traditions alive. To me, there is nothing more rewarding than putting a ton of effort in and shooting one in the mountains. It’s how we were raised and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support.

Congratulations Son very nice buck!!! God called my dad home Nov 4th 2020 I miss him dearly . it was November 20th 1976 that my dad took me on my first deer hunt at age 12 I got my first buck a 5 pt back in the day we weren't all about antlers like we are today but I feel that it's the individual hunters hunt and have seen lot's of hunter's belittling kids & adults for shooting small buck's don't get me wrong it's nice to harvest big buck's but I truly believe it's the memories that matter the most
@WanderingWhitetails
@WanderingWhitetails Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I couldn’t agree more! I shot my first buck around the same age as you, with my father. He was a 3 pt and I couldn’t have been happier! I agree, I would never shame another hunter for shooting any legal buck. It’s their tag and their choice to fill it how they please! And like you said, it’s the memories that matter most. When it’s all said and done, we won’t wish we shot bigger deer… we’ll cherish the fond memories we have of hunting and the stories shared with family and friends. Sorry to hear about your Dad, but I’m glad you got to enjoy so many special years together! Now May his presence carry on with you. Best of luck out there, thanks for watching!

@@WanderingWhitetails blacktails have a small home range like a whitetail, but not nearly as habitual. The does travel trails, the mature bucks tend to stay off of them, and rarely show themselves except for a few days in the rut. They live in the most unpenatratable hellholes that you can imagine. Reprod so thick you can't hardly get through it, if there is a small open spot in it, it's got blackberries growing there. The caynons are deep and steep. That time of year it's usually raining, and the wind is swirling like crazy. Other than that, they are fun to hunt. You can kill deer in the cuts, but rarely mature deer.

@@Northwest_Outdoors Wow! Sounds like a challenging hunt, no doubt about that! Brad, the guy in the video with me, actually lived in Alaska for many years and hunted blacktail too. Definitely an interesting deer species! Thanks for sharing that with me. Have you had any luck since living out there?
@Northwest_Outdoors

@@WanderingWhitetails I've spent some time in South East Alaska. That's how I ended up out here. I was commercial fishing up there in the summers when I was in high school. One yr I didn't fly home. That's some thick forests. The Kodiak deer seem to have adjuster to a more open habit. Which is probably good due to the predator situation they live in. As far a success, I've killed quite a few over the years. Only 2 I'd consider mature animals, neither were huge antlered deer. In Washington, we only get one tag, and we have to choose our weapon prior to buying the tag. I really enjoy archery hunting Mule Deer, so I don't hunt black tails every year.

@@Northwest_Outdoors That is such a a great story! Thanks for sharing. I’ve never had the opportunity to hunt another deer species, but it’s definitely on my bucket list! Hopefully a few different species before I’m unable to. I want to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps one day and hunt for a Caribou in Canada. He shot few in his day as well as moose. Of course elk and mule deer would be super exciting as well! Hope to make it out west some day. Congrats on your success and wishing you all the best!

Thanks! Many hunters don’t wear any orange at all in Vermont. I know many states do require a certain amount of orange coverage, but there is no orange law here. Of course it is still recommended. I always wear an orange hat for safety, which is plenty in my opinion, especially on snow. Plus there are very few hunters deep in the mountains. I may see 1-2 hunters per year, at most.
