Welcome back to #TheHormoneDiaries! Last time we left off with me getting my period just in time for my wedding (thanks, world!!) and today we're diving into the world of ovulation tracking. Do I find ovulation tests more stressful than helpful? Can Past!Hannah figure out that she's doing it wrong?? Let's find out! ✨

If you choose Health and Social Care at GCSE and A level Biology they teach you it in super detail. Even now a decade later things like this pops up and my brain goes 'you know this'. But in general sciences or sex Ed, definitely not.

Well to be fair young people tend to be more fertile, and having unprotected sex at that age is way too lightly to result in pregnancy to risk it.

Thank you for being so honest about how low it's making you feel at times. Obviously no-one wants to hear that you're feeling down, but it helps to know that you're not alone in feeling pretty extreme about it from time-to-time. My wife and I have been trying for about a year and she's had a grand total of two periods so... it's not going well. 125-day cycles are not a surprise anymore :\ Good luck

As one who has done fertility treatments wanted to give you a heads up that the sore boobs is likely from progesterone increasing after ovulation. If you get pregnant your boobs will likely be more sore because progesterone gets even higher. So don’t let the sore boobs get you down!

Came here to say the same thing! The body has no way of knowing that early if you are pregnant or not. The Luteal phase is body preparing for pregnancy, only towards the end, when no HCG (pregnancy hormone) is detected does the period start. Which is why "early signs of pregnancy" and signs that your period is coming are basically the same thing. A few days after ovulation is way too early to start symptom checking, even though it can be so hard not to.

I just wanted to put it out there for you or others who are trying to conceive that you can buy a like 100 pack of ovulation tests from amazon for basically the same price as 7 of those fancy ones. When my husband and I were trying I bought a pack that had like 200 ovulation strips and 40 pregnancy strips. I can completely relate to your coping mechanisms. Solo dance parties, lots and lots of alcohol "because why not, you're not pregnant anyhow?". That second half is likely not so healthy, but every once in a while it's not all bad. But I think at this point I've moved past the sad reaction of an unsuccessful cycle, and now I get angry instead, especially at new pregnancy announcements on social media- "Of COURSE they're pregnant with their THIRD child at 26 years old" rage rage rage. I also get angry at "we weren't even trying, it just happened" stories. It's hard. I feel you. Thank you so much for sharing your story in such a public way. It's actually so comforting to see/hear others go through the same struggles you're going through too.

Thank you for sharing! And for those who have never dealt with infertility, please don’t tell couples to relax, stop stressing, take a vacation, or take a break. These will not cure infertility. Hah... It was like that for me. We tried for 18 months, I was becoming rather desperate and figured I'd start learning to use a menstrual cup, to get a more positive notion on my period. You guessed it, I used the sucker once and then fell pregnant. I'm doing extended breastfeeding and I am one of the lucky few (unlucky? Because I low key start to want another baby?) who have absolute lactational amenorrhea, meaning my body will not ovulate unless my milk has completely dried. My period has by now been gone for 3 years. I don't even remember where I left the menstrual cup 😂😂😂

My ovulation has always felt just like that! Very confusing to me in high school, haha. Also, no need to panic immediately about PMS symptoms! The second part of the cycle has higher progesterone levels as part of the preparation for pregnancy, so you'll feel the same whether pregnant or not. Pregnancy hormones (HCG and super high progesterone) "switch on" at implantation, which is typically 10 or so days after ovulation. They build up fairly quickly after that and each person has a different tolerance, but generally you won't feel true pregnancy symptoms til 3-4 weeks after ovulation.

This was so very relatable. I’ve been TTC for almost two years. The pressure of hopefulness goes down a little but the disappointment every month when you start to bleed never ever goes away. I think what made it marginally better was like accepting and allowing myself to grieve my missed opportunity. “I shouldn’t be sad” no way. I can be sad as hell and that’s fine. A month is a long fucking time to wait to try again. Also like giving myself a lil self-love. This cycle..I ate half a container of icecream and bought some gardening shit I didn’t need. 😅

Your boobs hurting doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t conceive - sore boobs are often a sign of rising progesterone, which is normal post-ovulation (PMS symptoms generally don’t suggest you haven’t conceived, early pregnancy symptoms are driven by the same hormones and are actually very similar to your usual PMS) and desired for conception. My boobs hurt just the same the month we conceived, and then it got even worse as the pregnancy progesterone kept going up. Ouch!

I totally completely identify with the second guessing, confusion, and heartbreak that TTC brings. Been TTC for almost two years now with two losses. I’ve done the super expensive clear blue ovulation tests but once I learned my body’s rhythm and ovulation signs I found I didn’t need them anymore. Now I’ve ramped up and we’re doing medically assisted cycles with injectables and suppositories. It is INTENSE. I thought I was being hyper-vigilant and obsessive before? No. Not even close. I’m resting and taking a break next cycle after ending up in the ER with ovarian hyperstimulation last week. It’s just been so hard on the old mental health!!! I hear of someone else getting pregnant and I’m like “how??? That’s AMAZING!!!” Anyway, thank you so much for bringing back and making this series. The dialogue matters SO much.

My husband and I tried for 11 months to get pregnant. I was strict about LH testing (you can buy the strips off amazon for pretty cheap for a lot!) and BBT testing and still nothing. On the 12th month I gave up, told him let's just take a break and start trying again in a few months, and immediately got pregnant (9 weeks along now!). I agree that ovulation testing can really be more stress than it's worth! Hoping the best for you! Just remember to stay positive and never give up!

oooh congrats!! I hear this kind of story a lot but what do you mean by "take a break"? because if you're still having sex that's not a break lol

@M e Hey, perhaps you mean well but I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned before on this channel that the 'just relax and it'll happen!' cliché can be frustrating and unhelpful. Even as someone who isn't interested in conceiving I can imagine a wealth of other situations where someone insisting that you "relax!" is, if anything, just counterproductive. The anecdote above is lovely, but it is just an anecdote, not causal evidence. And as a general rule, insisting that we as audience members know what Hannah or any other creator "needs" to do can come across as intrusive. Just some things to keep in mind when commenting. :)

@@hannahwitton Haha true! I guess I meant just take a break from the stress of constantly testing for ovulation and then testing for pregnancy. Neither of us has a super high sex drive, so we were really planning sex just around ovulation timing and it was so stressful and not very sexy anymore. I agree it's great to know more about your body and what's going on in your cycle, but for me I think it was just too stressful to be on a constant schedule with constant disappointment. But I think the most important thing is to do what makes you feel best during your TTC journey! Everyone's different :)

For Hannah and anyone who is trying to conceive, try not to make it the centre of your life, so you don’t feel disappointed and frustrated if it took some time. Every time you get your period just think “ yay! I have one more month of no responsibility!” Enjoy your life and all the things you might miss when you became a parent . It will happen and your life will be filled with joy at the right time ♥️

I have a 1yo daughter and will likely be starting to try again in the next few months, and this is a helpful reminder that things do not always go as planned and are not always easy. Thank you for helping to normalize the conversation! -Erin

Your story sounds sooo much like mine was 4 years ago. My partner and I tried for over a year and I did all of these thing and felt all the same emotions you are feeling. We finally saw a fertility specialist and found out I had PCOS. I had irregular periods, similar to your cycles. We did IUI and conceived our precious boy on the first try, he will be 3 in June. Keep trying and don’t think about it too much.

Ahhh this was sooo good to watch 😍 We were trying for about 4 months until I realised I wasn’t ovulating at all. A year and a half later and I’m now taking fertility injections to boost follicle growth and ovulation. It’s a pain in the butt to have to wait it out and keep trying after continually being disappointed, but we have to remember that modern medicine is amazing and so is the determination of women ❤️

Have never commented on KZbin before but had to because this is so relateable! Thank you for making such honest and engaging content about this- I am 1 year TTC and have been scared of the ovulation kits for fear of adding even more anxiety into the already kind of anxious mix so hearing you talk about them in this way has definitely made me feel less alone since I seem to just see so much discourse about people using them. You are fab! ❤️

Hannah, Thanks for sharing so openly your journey! I personally found that tracking my cycle with a mixture of temperature, cervical mucus and ... loooooads of time to understand my body, really helped me interpreting my body’s signals when it comes to ovulation. You’re doing great! I see you’re really, really wanting this - and I wish you all the best on your journey to parenthood! Looking forward to the cycle tracking app review 👀! Take care!

The "I really wanna have a baby" line and tone of voice just made me start bawling. We've only been trying for three cycles for real but it just feels like it's never going to happen. Especially as we haven't used birth control in 8 months, just only the last 3 cycles have we really tried to time it

Hannah again sending you big hugs. Remember as a family going through this (for 7 years 😳) so trust me I feel ya.... the moment you stop thinking about it and trying, is the time “sods law” kicks in and you get pregnant. (Not that it will help much but) this is just the start of the journey when (notice positive word choice) you get pregnant this is the start of a whole new emotional journey that yet again your not taught about 🤷🏻‍♂️

Very excited to hear how you find charting!! Good luck! I was in pain this whole video wanting to tell you to start charting your basal body temp, cervical fluid and cervix position. Within a couple of cycles of charting, identifying the day of ovulation and your fertile window becomes extremely easy!! Plus you can also use charting as a method of contraception if you need that again. Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Weschler is a awesome resource for learning about charting, either to conceive or as a contraception method! :)

Hi Hannah! Creamy white discharge can be your egg dropping. I conceived successfully twice by using the discharge tracking system. I ovulate on day 10 regularly with no symptoms other than discharge. When I’m fertile, right before my egg drops and I see that discharge, my discharge is creamy but not sticky, like quite slick. This is probably TMI but also genuinely just trying to help. 💕 Good luck!

Getting pregnant can be so complicated and even the same couple can have wildly different experiences. My parents had the same experience as yours with their first (my brother) - they got pregnant the first month they were trying. But then, trying for me took several years (even though my mom was still only like 30). My mom ‘gave up’ and went back to Uni and (drumroll) naturally, right away got pregnant with me... She still finished her Uni degree though, what a badass.

Oh on the ovary pain - I had a pelvic adhesion where my ovary adhered to my pelvic wall. That's almost exactly where the pain was so I would imagine that was an ovulation pain.

Can highly recommend the book "Taking charge of your fertility", it taught me so much about my body which I felt should have been taught in school. Many of the apps don't work too well when you have pcos or irregular cycles, but the methods in the book really made sense to me.

We need a Dan channel. We're getting Hannah's side of the story but Dan's side is also important. Most people trying to get pregnant have partners who are going through this process with them. I don't see much of their story on KZbin. Men don't talk (much) about this sort of stuff and a "safe space" connected to Hanna's side of the story could be really useful for both parties in trying to become pregnant.
