Mike, a series on trailers may be worth wild for folks like Joe! Lots and lots and lots to cover regarding trailers. You mentioned trailer brakes, ramps and treated flooring. But other topics could include axles (1 v 2 for most first buyers) weight (rated v actual load), tongue weight, and the list can go on and on!

if you have a truck big enough for you to comfortably haul your tractor then i would definitely get a trailer because they can be indefinitely useful on property for hauling all sorts of stuff like if you get a tractor with a set of pallet forks you can go to Home depot Lowes etc and get building materials for a new pole barn or shed a lot easier and cheaper than without one any who thats just my ten cents in my experience its a lot better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it!

No package deals with the tractor I am looking at, but discounts if you purchase multiple implements at the time of the tractor purchase, something that I'm interested in given I need 3-4 implements immediately. Tractor, loader, box blade, mid mount mower, roto-tiller, pallet forks. Skip the trailer if you already have one or several. You just need the trailer to be able to haul everything home at once...most of the time you won't have every attachment with you if you need to haul your tractor somewhere, maybe 1 or 2 implements at a time....biggest thing is a trailer long enough to haul the tractor with a loader and a 3 point rotary cutter off the back without having stuff hanging off the front and back of the trailer LOL. Brakes are required in most if not all states on trailers typically over about 2000-3000lbs and the more brakes you have the better off you are doesn't matter if you got a huge truck, if you have to stop quickly its not going to end pretty. My trailer has brakes on both axles, if you get a tandem axle trailer the extra money for having both axles braked is a great investment. Also, buy a trailer or be sure the trailer is actually rated for the weight you are going to be carrying, so many are not or extremely close to the trailer's weight capacity with very little wiggle room...buy bigger than you need, much bigger capacity at least. Don't skimp on brakes, add a winch you'll thank yourself the first time you need to drag a dead vehicle or tractor onto the trailer. Get as many tie down point locations on the trailer as you can, you need to be able to easily and quickly tie stuff down in multiple locations oftentimes, like a tractor and implements. Ramps are a must, get ramps that hook on the back of the trailer not just sit on the trailer deck, you'd be surprised how many incidents there are from ramps sliding off a trailer get the type of trailer with attached ramps or the type that hook over a bar on the back of the trailer to keep the ramps attached while loading/unloading. If you can afford one get a tilt deck trailer, it makes loading & unloading easier...a dump trailer with sides is a great option as well if you can afford it, they're great for hauling rock, gravel, dirt, etc. plus your tractor and implements if you buy one large enough. I already have a trailer so in my case I'm glad they aren't doing a package deal as typically the trailers they offer in "package" deals are garbage. My trailer was built to haul construction equipment and landscaping boulders. The deck is old military aircraft landing strips called Marston Mats. Great thing with them is the numerous tiedown options due to the way those mats are made with all the holes you can tie down wherever you want, which makes hauling equipment, cars, etc. extremely easy, plus the open sides on the deck allow you to load and unload stuff from the sides of the trailer. Friend of mine hauled 7 ATV's and 5 dirt bikes on it a few years ago and had no issues. I have hauled numerous cars, trucks, SUV's, ATV's, etc. on it over the years, the only thing I wish I had was a winch on it, the only time you really ever have to haul a vehicle is if its dead, I've spent an hour or more with come-a-long cable pullers loading cars, its not very fun especially in the middle of summer which inevitably is when stuff breaks down it seems LOL. My last haul on the trailer was a 72 Mustang El Grande 351W. With a trailer the possibilities of use are almost endless...Seems like I'm always needing a trailer for something, and of course the trailer I need usually has something on it already...so having a couple trailers of similar types never hurts...and typically your registration costs on a trailer are quite low....at least here in Idaho I can get 10 year trailer plates for cargo and utility trailers for about $50 or less.

Excellent heads-up Mike! Another note, make sure the PTO HP is sufficient for the implements already owned and for new ones you may want in the future. I would love a bigger bush hog for cutting larger saplings but my tractor is the limiting factor.

F150 tow rating is right at 7,000 (usually - a bit based on options) I believe that if the trailer is rated above 3000 lb GVW you need brakes. YOU WANT electric WITH the proportional brake controller if its not large enough to need air brakes. NO SURGE BRAKES!

Great advice. Personally, I opted for the manual transmission intentionally because of the type of work that I do. I maintain a 5.7 mile gravel road with it (among other things) and I was concerned that the hydrostatic would give out when box blading or land planing the road for hours on end. I also saved about $1K which I was able to put towards implements. If I were to do more back and forth work, I'd have gotten the hydrostatic. I can say that I'm very happy with the standard. I have a 2017 Kioti CK3510 and I don't regret my decision one bit. Great tractor (shady dealer though).

I’m on my second John Deere and I went a little bigger this time. I already had my trailer but due to the weight of the new tractor I installed trailer breaks because I really didn’t need them with my old tractor. He definitely needs the trailer and if in the future he decides he doesn’t need it, he can always sell it. Since I have a trailer, I use it for a great many things besides hauling a tractor. I feel he will regret not getting the trailer and if it needs brakes it’s about an hour job installing them and it’s not a big expense to buy them. Y’all have a good-un!

I purchased my first tractor as a "package deal" and so far I have been pretty pleased with what I got. It's a sub-compact that came with the tractor, loader and a backhoe all on a 16' trailer with brakes. The machine has pretty much paid for itself and I use the trailer not only for the tractor, but also for hauling 16' lumber, other farm tools, etc. The trailer is most definitely useful. I also took the finance terms rather than buying outright for cash (which I was prepared to do) because they offered $0 down and 0% financing for 60 months. I wasn't really excited about having an outstanding loan, but the way I look at it I'm using their money rather than my own. I can keep my money in the bank earning a very measly rate as long as I make sure that I make the monthly payment. One thing that I will note regarding the deal though. The financing offer comes with a mandatory insurance policy which raised the overall cost of the final purchase price a bit, but the insurance does cover damage and/or theft for the duration of the loan. That works out fine for me since my tractor stays on my property which is about 45 miles away from my home during the week.

Trailer is a good idea for hauling the tractor to the dealer for service. A 100 mile each way trip charge will be terrible. A winch is not expensive. The package is not a bad idea for a beginner hobby farmer because it will have most of the things you will use the most. Skip the backhoe if you are not going into the backhoe operation business. Those are the item that ends up sitting unused the most. >>>>>>>>>>>> I recently ordered a package deal small utility tractor with hydrostatic drive ($800 more than the manual transmission) in a package deal, trailer, quick attach bucket, quick attach loader, pallet forks, bush hog, box blade and post hole digger. AND IT INCLUDES BALLAST IN THE TIRES. After a lot of research, I'll use all of these quite a bit for the farm I am buying. I will probably want 2 more attachments within a couple of years. A small plow/cultivator and a low cost broadcast grass seed spreader. Appx $900 more for these. > This is bigger than the common compact tractor deal. I got the breakdown on cash price vs financing and this brand doesn't front-load the loan. If I pay it early (which I plan to do) , it costs me less. > They do offer packages for a lot of different size tractors. > Research, research, research! And the final thing that put me to buying my brand of choice was the hydrostatic with side by side pedals instead of the rocker pedal. (which still doesn't tell you the brand)

I think the question needs to be asked in a different way, do you need a trailer/ truck combination available to transport your tractor or other equipment as needed, yes. Do you have close friends that will do that for you? Do you have other trailers that exceed the capacity needed for tractor and just don't want ANOTHER trailer? Do you have a truck capable of towing the trailer and tractor combination? But quite simply the fact that someone is asking this question kind of points to the fact that the person is out of their depth by getting the tractor if they are unaware of the need to have the tractor elsewhere on occasion

Forget tractors. I’ve had a lot of times that a flat bed trailer would be really helpful. Most notably, with picking up bulk animal feed. Things get really cheap when you can get pallet’s worth. I’ve seen feed go from 25¢ to 15¢ simply by getting in bulk. A ton would equal $200 in savings.

This video is four years old, and this comment has probably already been made by someone or several people, but I with almost 100% certainty think that anybody that owns a tractor should have a trailer capable of moving the tractor and at least one of it's larger implements as well. I say this, because after you have a tractor, you'd be surprised at how often a relative, or friend will ask you if you would mind doing some work for them with it at their place. I do this often, and have no problem helping friends and family out. But if I didn't have the trailer that I have, I definitely wouldn't drive the tractor down the road for an hour or more to get to the friend/family member that I'd otherwise be willing to help. Also as you stated, if you're not a mechanic, at some point YOU ARE going to have to get the tractor to the dealer for warranty work, or whatever other problem may arise, and since you may not be a mechanic.....well, you've already explained how expensive that can be to have it picked up by the dealer, or a towing company.

You make a good point about the implements in the package. I have seen some packages that I thought, "I would never or hardly ever use that, why would I want that?". Well, all I can think is some salesman put the package together and he was trying to increase appeal to the uninformed/inexperienced buyer/user while getting more profit off the sale.

That trailer can be used to haul other items, so once you have it you may find yourself using it to haul building materials, dirt, gravel, or other vehicles, etc. I bought a side by side several years ago, didn't need a trailer but got it anyways, I used that trailer to haul wood, lumber, mulch, etc. very rarely did I ever use it to haul the side by side after I got it home. If that trailer is for hauling a tractor, it damn well better have brakes on it, otherwise technically its illegal as any trailer 2k or heavier in many states requires brakes, that trailer+tractor is going to weigh a lot more than 2k...unless your tractor is maybe a lawn tractor LOL. Typically these places find the cheapest, worst built trailers to put with their "package" deals, I wouldn't waste money on the trailer that comes in the package, go buy a heavy duty trailer that's going to last for decades, you'll pay more of course but you won't want to strangle yourself every time you go to use it.

I purchased what I considered a good package deal on a Mahindra 1526 shuttle shift about 2 years ago. I wanted the shuttle shift and didnt need a big tractor as I have less than 5 acres. Trailer is 18' Big Tex trailer with ramps + spare + brakes. Tractor included quick attach bucket and pallet forks on front, and rear quick hitch, rake, and box blade (already had a brush hog). Total cost out the door was about $200 over $20k including tt&l (paid cash with no financing) and took it all home the same day. No other dealer in the area could come within $2k for what I got. The next closest priced dealer would have had to order some items with a 2-3 week wait time and was only a 2 wheel drive tractor without the quick attach front loader and the trailer was not as good quality.

All great points to consider. As Joe questioned does he need a trailer, that to me is a question to pose on every item in that package. And not only the question of do I need a box blade but as Mike said regarding the box blade ask on each item in that package will it do the job I need it to do? These 2 questions are true for every item-starting with the tractor and including every item. Will the loader lift what you plan to lift? May mean a bigger tractor is needed? As for the trailer and purchasing it, ask those above questions. Trailer buying is a subject that could take up a whole series of videos! As a tractor owner, I have a trailer and my vote is yes get a trailer, but be sure it is what mets those questions above! Also in addition to brakes (and you need a brake controller in your truck as well as wiring for both your truck and trailer), ramps and treated flooring there are lots more issues you nerd to educate yourself about!

Mike, thanks for the sound advice on package deals. If Joe does his own maintenance he may be ok without a trailer. Also wouldn’t need one if his family or friend has one he can use. He might need one if he hauls it to the dealer for repairs and maintenance, 100 miles is a pretty long haul.

I think He might be smart to buy a trailer. A lot depends on how big the tractor is. That dictates the size capacity of the trailer. Back in 2012, I bought a new trailer with a 14000Lb. GVWR. My tractor with the loader and Bush Hog weighed 8000 Lbs. The trailer cost just over $5700.00. By the way, you have to be careful about the total GVWR of the truck and trailer combination. A DOT cop told me with the 11,300 GVWR of the truck and the 14,000 GVWR of the trailer I was only 700Lbs. away from needing a class A license. That's for trailer trucks, so be careful about trailer size. Bigger isn't always better. A trailer is useful for moving just about anything with wheels or tracks, even moving someone's possessions. Sizing the winch if you choose to get one is important too. I have a 10,000 pound rated winch. Thinking that the GVWR of the trailer is 14,000, that means I can legally carry 10,000 Lbs. Pulling a dead tractor up the ramps would mean a heavier winch because when you have that dead weight coming up those ramps, all of a sudden it turns into a much heavier object. I should have gotten at least a 12,000Lb winch because I maxed out the winch pulling an old (small) IHC Bulldozer. It pulled it twenty feet on the ground with no problem but once I got it on the ramps it wouldn't pull it over the edge onto the deck. We pulled it with the help of a manual comealong, once it got on the deck, the winch pulled it, again, with no problem at all. I've been told that a trailer can be registered in Main and it doesn't need to be inspected after the initial inspection, if you're worried about that. I don't know the ins and outs of that never having done it. Anyway, great video as usual.

Does he have the truck to pull the entire package weight? I would price it all out separately with what you want, then compare the price. How does that work with regards to the loan if you go to sell an individual piece of the equipment later on? The financing may not be as good with a package deal versus purchasing separately. However, if you have to finance, a package might be good if you don't have cash for a trailer which might be more difficult to get on financing. My last tractor I had on a 10 year loan at 4.75% from a local bank. I traded it and got a 0% loan through Kubota after we moved and my needs changed. Also, if you don't already have a trailer, you're going to need one for any sizable amount of property. Beware, however, you're likely going to need something later that is heavier duty than what may come in a compact tractor package.

Good info... I am one of those guys with the thought process of better to have and not need it than need it and not have it. With that said.....being a new tractor owner I wish I had research just a tad longer as I had not realized not all tractors do not come with third function valves. I found afterwards this is something I really could use as I wanted a grapple. Now I have to have that installed. Trailers well.... I have probably more than I need. For years I would have to borrow one which I hated. It might sit there for a while without being used, but when, not if, I need one it is waiting for me. I don't have to track one down to borrow..

The trailer is the only item which isn't used much, and I now have a 3032 tractor which I didn't get in a package since I already had the other items. I was told that the brush hog I got would cut brush up to 3" inches thick, and the trailer is the cheapest equipment I got in the package and I had to replace the wood on it later on since it rotted. I kept the bush hog on my 790 tractor since it is used mainly, and the other tractor is used with the rest of my implements

Sometimes though, if you are financing the package, it can be cheaper to go ahead and get the trailer. For example, Kubota offers a 0% for 84 months if you include the trailer. However, without the trailer you can only finance it for 5 years (and more importantly) the interest is 5.79%. In my deal, the trailer cost $3,200 out the door. The interest would have cost me almost $8,000.00. $3,200 or $8,000....getting the trailer was a no-brainer! Also, if you really don't need the trailer you can always sell it afterword...or gift it to a family member. In my case, I didn't need the trailer and I sold it for almost what I paid for it. On a side note...I bought a L6060 and a good trailer with brakes and ramps (a little over-priced - Orange Line TU 10).

Farmers are ruthless negotiators so you have to build in a little "fluff" to get to where everyone is happy. I've never seen anywhere near 20% margin on a tractor. We might ask 12% and no more, if you were real lucky you might get 10%, 8% was pretty common and if pushed, you might take 5% to keep a customer coming in the store. Margins aren't that great on new tractors. The major companies are constantly hammering dealer to keep up their market share and sometimes tie other discounts to your percentage of sale of the whole market, so you gotta keep the iron moving. Most people think dealers are getting rich and it's not nearly as lucrative as the car business.

I have 5 acres and 600 feet of driveways. I've been looking at kubota , john deere 1025r, and rk 24. No new Holland dealer near me. Do you think 23 to 25 horsepower will be enough to move gravel and minimal brush cutting. I use a Gravely ZTHD 60 to mow.

Yea, that is a great size and I use my tractor that size to mow, move material and do anything else you can think if. I can mow about 1 acre an hour with my 4 foot bush hog. Watch reviews on each one and see how much they can get done.

Can you "rent" the trailer from the dealer to pick-up your own tractor....I know it would be a 100 mile trip two ways, but I would think that would be cheaper for the dealer who will get the repair business with no labor needed for the pick-up. Just a thought....

Great tips👍I reckon skip the trailer if not going use trailer for any other farm used. I reckon used tractor if are on a budget but factor in break down cost plus I look into trying get lubricants added into package deal like we did, definitely save money.

When I upgraded from my Ford 8N to a Kubota L3301 my dealer was very good and swapped out a rotary tiller for the rotary cutter which was part of the package. I had a rotary cutter that was only one year old at the time. I was also in need of upgrading my trailer and the only difference in the package deal was stand up ramps as compared to the slide away ramp version I had been looking at. He gave me a discount for paying cash and loaded the tires with Rim Guard. I paid less than what I was planning on.

I don't own anything I can't haul myself. A 12v winch will pull that tractor onto a trailer. Loosen the hydraulic hose to release the pressure and pull the bucket up. If a guy can't figure this out he's not cut out to live in the country.

If you are shopping for a tractor, know why you need the tractor. What all are you going to do with it? Make your own package and ask for a deal on what you select. If not happy with the deal, go eleswhere.

Don’t ever buy solely on payment. As the buyer it’s your responsibility to budget properly so that your down payment gets the payment of the equipment to your budget. Never rely on the someone else to “fit your budget”. After all it’s the dealers job to sell equipment so he will sell you all the equipment you want in a payment window. Also, it’s vital to know how much you are spending.

Hello mike I’m trading a Kioti 4510 open cab, for a 5510 cab , the ? Is the Kioti people are offering 3,300 cash back what kind of scam is that and they also included the cash back to the value of my paid for tractor on there own, also I’m feeling that they are not willing to give me as much as I really think they should! Of course, and I’m getting the saying , you are getting the best deal ! Well I’m getting a cab but I’m wanting to be happier in my trade, they say I’m getting 22,500 for my trade in after 3300 cash back, the tractor has 160 hours on it and two years warranty on it , I was told that I had 7 years when I bought it, and somehow three years disappeared, I’ve tried other dealers and they are worse than where I’ve been dealing with, also can’t get them to come off a deal on a trailer, how should I be? More aggressive or be the push over and hand them 15,000 and my tractor.?
@TractorMike

Troy, it's not pretty when you're a dealer and have to trade a customer out of a nearly new tractor. The day you take delivery of a new tractor, its value drop sharply. Rule of thumb is, a brand new tractor, with the warranty clock ticking, will retail about 30% below what you paid for it and if a dealer is trading for it, he'll have to put 10-15% below that in cash in it. The used, almost-new tractor on his lot has to be much lower priced to be attractive to a buyer, otherwise he will opt for a new tractor. I don't have access to costs of new tractors, but the deal your local Kioti dealer is offering doesn't sound far out of line to me, $15,000 for a larger tractor with a cab is definitely in the ballpark of what I'd consider fair. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
